part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

No January! - I thought OTBT wasn't a good idea - hidden away and if it falls out of the spotlight we will struggle to raise interest.
I am going to contact MN (again) to ask them to get the 'in the news' sidebar link updated to this thread ... but I guess we can't really expect them to keep it there for much longer....
Can the person who started the petition email to find out how much longer - it said something in the link about going before a 'petition committee' -just wondering how often they meet?

januarybrown1998 · 19/01/2016 10:24

unlucky, agreed. This is not a whispering matter.

Nigel Farage just emailed me:

I will be speaking on this subject in the European Parliament this afternoon

I asked where we can follow/read proceedings.

My DH (labour) said he hoped NF wouldn't make political capital out if it. I think he (NF) has been very restrained.

I hope the fact his wife is German means he's had some domestic pressure.

Where the fuck is Emily when we need her?

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 19/01/2016 10:34

No snow today.

MamaMary · 19/01/2016 10:45

Morning all.

Very interesting timing from David Cameron re English language lessons and the veil.

Reasonable discussion about it on Women's Hour this morning.

The public mood is changing. We need to keep the pressure up with this petition.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 10:45

Never thought you would utter that polenta Grin

Great to see some justice at last in previous thread and very interesting troll definition too. Thank you.

So now its the waiting game!

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 10:47

I feel like Julie Andrews on the mountain breathing the fresh air Grin swinging my arms around.

No snow here either, but we didn't get any at all at the weekend. I live in a bubble

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 11:30

No petition yet?

BungoWomble · 19/01/2016 11:30

lightlighter oooh... what a crushing comment. And how productive at this point.

Should leave it at that, but for the record, no I was sitting on my fence as usual. I liked Cameron's compromise. Never thought I would put 'like' and 'Cameron' in the same sentence without a 'bugger off', but there you go, even he can make useful contributions sometimes Grin.

Nightclubs in Denmark banning entry depending on ability to speak European languages

Cologne2016 · 19/01/2016 11:55

It was rejected by the Petitions committee. They said -
"It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do."

Moreshabbythanchic · 19/01/2016 12:00

Bloody hell! How disappointing.

MariscallRoad · 19/01/2016 12:20

Cologne2016 Tue 19-Jan-16 11:55:48 Dont give up. All campaigns are difficult. We need to rephrase the contents make a clearer message and resubmit. We should not give up. I will have a thinking on it. Which MPs condemned attacks?

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 12:21
Shock
MariscallRoad · 19/01/2016 12:24

*Moreshabbythanchic You all worked hard. Another effort is required.

polentapies · 19/01/2016 12:26

V disappointing. Political hot potato maybe

fourmummy · 19/01/2016 12:31

Looking at the other petitions on the website, they have definitive, clear goals. The two keys terms, 'debate' and 'enforce' are either already being done ('we are enforcing it. There's the law' type of argument)or are easy to dismiss ('we debated it'). Other petitions have 'stop' (although not always) in the aims. At the very least, they have very direct goals.

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 12:32

Change.org one with same wording and a closing paragraph stating we are disappointed the Government one was rejected?

glenthebattleostrich · 19/01/2016 12:33

So we rewrite the wording asking what the government intend to do to keep women safe?

fourmummy · 19/01/2016 12:41

It needs to be a sentiment/directive that'll take the petition to debate. Very clear directives to the government are needed. Will think about this. Cameron's statements in the press today are very timely so it's important to press on with this so that these events coincide.
