The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

MP David Davies Monmouth condemned the attacks, he's throne who suggested we start a petition

Palebluedotty · 19/01/2016 13:10

They have just been discussing attitudes to migrants on the Daily Politics. Along the lines of 'is it wrong that people's attitudes are hardening'' post Cologne.

No mention of women's rights. The Anglican vicar, didn't catch his name, blamed the changing attitudes on Islamophobia, was fullly supportive of accepting all comers and said, I kid you not: "We have to be up for the troubles that come". Yeah right, the women of Europe must be up for mass sexual assault. Thanks Vicar. Unbelievable

I think the other guy, Raheem Kassam was introduced as on the right. He was in favour of controls, suggested background checks and argued that it wasn't wrong for attitudes to be hardening and that it wasn't Islamophobia. I think he said he came from a Muslim background.

BungoWomble · 19/01/2016 13:15

Perhaps we should first start a petition for the parliamentary petition system to allow petitions with more than 300 characters so that you can look at issues in more detail, instead of restricting it to simple media soundbites.

Something more specific would be, 'Following mass sex attacks on women throughout Europe we call on the government to acknowledge and further investigate the impact on women's rights of the immigration of men from cultures known to be misogynistic, and discuss the integration of those men.'

Would we really need to ask them to stop immigration before they'd listen?

MariscallRoad · 19/01/2016 13:17

fourmummy Yes, see what exists and what is required. I do not know the Change.org petition, I knew others.

MamaMary · 19/01/2016 13:19

How disappointing.

I think we should stick with the wording we've got - we worked so hard on it - and simply start in under Change.org.

We can still have a lot of impact.

unlucky83 · 19/01/2016 13:22

Oh no ....but lets not give up hope.
I think it just needs a rewrite
So keep what we have already written in the blurb but change the petition title to something snappier.
(I have to say DD1 (teen) said but what do you want to happen when I showed it to her)
Also having a think.
We do want it debated! We do want the issues talked about.

Will continue thinking ...

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 13:24

Yes I agree go to change with the same wording, the link to the government rejection and explain we were character restricted. Yet they gave a three hour debate to the Trump petition. Half the population is female and we were rejected. Angry

We don't have time to waste.

MamaMary · 19/01/2016 13:27

Yes, we do want it debated.

It's very disappointing - I think the intention was clear enough and it shouldn't have been rejected.

It took us several days to come up with wording... and we don't want to get bogged into that again.

unlucky83 · 19/01/2016 13:28

Change.org drives me insane though ...not sure how other people feel about it
I signed something once (or maybe twice) and I get inundated with emails saying we think you would be interested in - I'm now at the point where I delete without opening...

BungoWomble · 19/01/2016 13:29

Petition title - something along lines of, Enforce women's rights over misogynistic religious practices and ideas?

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 13:30

I think it will get debated. I suggest start a change.org petition and get on with it. The government will hold it up again otherwise.

Palebluedotty · 19/01/2016 13:32

In light of the petition being rejected, I am asking myself what do I want the government to do, specifically?

Family-only refugee policy like Canada has implemented?
Specific written material to be handed out to refugees on arrival making it very clear what women's and LGBT people's rights and status are in the UK and what the legal penalties are for ignoring them?
Awareness training and specific policing plans to be drawn up for an incident of 'taharrush gamea' mass sexual assault in the UK?

I think the last might be good, given how the Cologne police said it was a crime of a totally new dimension.

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 13:32

There is a news angle with it having been rejected along with the actual petition issues.

Delete change.org once you have signed the petition?

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:34

glen i put forward a proposed wording more on those lines in last thread.

ie government has a duty of care to us, what are they going to do to make sure we are kept safe?

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 13:35

Don't change the wording of the petition. Add a short explanation paragraph and link to rejected government petition.

Stop time wasting. Place your personal thoughts on change.org when you sign the petition.

I am quite annoyed this has been blocked.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:35

Yes Pale

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:36

unlucky I am also not fond of change. org.

I hardly read anything now.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:38

'Following mass sex attacks on women throughout Europe we call on the government to acknowledge and further investigate the impact on women's rights of the immigration of men from cultures known to be misogynistic, and discuss the integration of those men.'

YY its direct...

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:40

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults. UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation or sexual violence. We ask the Government to debate and enforce measures to promote and uphold women's rights irrespective of cultural attitudes.

^ orginal.

We ask the government to reassure us, and tell us what measures they are taking to promote and uphold....?

KERALA1 · 19/01/2016 13:40

The treatment of this has totally changed my world view on a lot of things. The prevailing politically correct orthodoxy is meant well but is actually very frightening. The west needs to be stronger and more confident in asserting its values (secularism, human rights for all etc.)

Did anyone hear the News Quiz on this? The (female) comedian said piously how before she could comment she would like to hear the victims view of this. The others ernestedly agreed. THE VICTIMS WERE INTERVIEWED ON THE FUCKING BBC! IT HAPPENED. The left wing right on comedians just could not deal with this.

Also the kerfuffle about Trump being banned from the UK. Yet Saudi leaders and ex ISIS men are allowed in?

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:42

yes kerala

BungoWomble · 19/01/2016 13:45

or even 'acknowledge and investigate the impact on women's secular rights of misogynistic religious ideas and practices and the mass immigration of men from cultures based on those. Debate about how to integrate such men is urgently needed' cos that covers faith schools and sharia courts already here too.

(I was gobsmacked to learn sharia courts really do exist here, thought that was a right wing myth)

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:46

Its only a case of tweaking the language nothing to do with the point at all.

Cologne2016 · 19/01/2016 13:51

Thanks to all for all the hard work.

I am going to hand the baton over to someone else for the next attempt.

bungo I was sent this recently.

Also gobsmacked. My left-wing convictions are shaking.
