part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

Vertigo, all the families that reach the Greek shores on the boats will have paid people smugglers. Are you seriously saying they are 'me me me' types? My boyfriend met a little girl blinded in one eye by a bomb? Her parents were so selfish weren't they, to not wait for the next bomb that could finish her off?

VertigoNun · 25/01/2016 12:20

Help, JC explained on This morning earlier. A few in Calais have family in the UK who are too poor to sponsor them.

Another case, one family member has a uk passport and the others in the family don't and they are poor.

emilybohemia · 25/01/2016 12:20

Help, that isn't true. There are people in the Calais camp that have applied for asylum in France, but it can take years to process them.

Palebluedotty · 25/01/2016 12:24

I'm afraid I've purchased a conspiracy hat and am wearing it today putting. Look at this interview from 2007 with General Wes Clark.
www.globalresearch.ca/we-re-going-to-take-out-7-countries-in-5-years-iraq-syria-lebanon-libya-somalia-sudan-iran/5166

And this article in the Guardian which links to other alarming reports.
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/03/us-isis-syria-iraq

Classified report that identifies and predicts the rise of a group like ISIS and its effect on Syria. Why welcome it? Whatever keeps Saudi Arabia sweet perhaps.

Emily "There are people in the Calais camp that have applied for asylum in France, but it can take years to process them."

It takes years to properly process people in the UK too. But while they are waiting for papers the Calais people could at least have lived under cover in dry conditions. In this regard, there is nothing heroic about trying to circumvent any country's procedures. Once papers received they can travel to UK.

  1. DespicableBee here please: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/119385
MariscallRoad · 25/01/2016 13:33

DS emailed me he signed the petition and says it was well done.

emilybohemia · 25/01/2016 13:43

Help, eh? How can they live in dry conditions while waiting for asylum? I'm sure they would if they could.

You really seem intent on drumming up hate for the most vulnerable people that live on scraps of food and in makeshift shelters. You blame them for their plight. Do you really think they have any other choice? No one Why can’t they enter the UK legally?

You can't claim asylum until you actually enter the UK, so I'm not sure what you mean about papers?

A very small number of people come to the UK under the UN resettlement programme- of the 10.5 million refugees of concern to UNHCR around the world, only about 1 per cent are submitted by the agency for resettlement.

Many of the people in Calais have survived war, torture, imprisonment, and years of oppression. Why do you hate these people?

Many are fleeing war, genocide, famime and oppressive states in East Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The biggest groups are from Sudan (and South Sudan), Eritrea, Afghanistan, and Syria. These are some of the most war torn places in the world, which create millions of refugees.

Most European countries take more asylum seekers than the UK. There are nearly as many people leaving the UK as arriving. There is plenty for everyone but the resources are not shared equally.

AllTheMadmen · 25/01/2016 13:47

I don't read anyone posts like that - you are the only poster who ever talks about these people in degenerative terms.

Moreshabbythanchic · 25/01/2016 13:50

Emily you are very eager for the people of the UK to accommodate these people which will mean more hardship for us who live here with regards to housing, education, employment etc. I find this very arrogant of you considering you don't even live here.

emilybohemia · 25/01/2016 13:59

Moreshabby, how do you know where I live? Are you in fact Mystic Meg?

Moreshabbythanchic · 25/01/2016 14:01

I don't need to be, you have said several times that you live in another country. Keep up.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 25/01/2016 14:13

Emily My question was why did they not claim ASYLUM IN FRANCE? They would have been housed and had protection from the elements. And don't you dare try to teach me about war, famine, beatings and genocide you ignorant girl. My parents lived thru all of that. Tracy, you know nothing about how asylum is processed and you hv a one-track mind.

Do you honestly think that it is feasible to receive a quarter of the world's population into Europe, do you really? That is a logistical nightmare - can we hv a few pearls of wisdom from you on this. Thank you.

emilybohemia · 25/01/2016 14:19

I haven't, moreshabby. You have an odd interest in my personal circumstances.

I don't think it is arrogant of me at all. Many people across the UK are willing to take more refugees. I am British and if things continue as they are, history will not look well on us.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 25/01/2016 14:25

MoreShabby, how are we going to apportion that list of people that was submitted upthread? Who's going to email who? I've emailed Ferrari and Littlejohn already, as they were my suggestions, and I've mailed 25 people I know.
Any suggestions anyone?

DespicableBee · 25/01/2016 14:26

I just saw a poll and it said 75% of British public do not want the migrants from calaise to come to the UK
Corbyn is so out of touch with the public

CalmYoBadSelf · 25/01/2016 14:26

emily I have to back up moreshabby on this one. I do not know exactly where you live but I have also seen you say you are not in the UK although you have popped up on so many threads now I could not tell you which one.

LumelaMme · 25/01/2016 14:29

emily, I suspect history may look back and say Angela Merkel was extremely foolish to, effectively, encourage thousands of people to risk their lives in the hands of people smugglers rather than pushing for huge improvements in existing camps.

Plus, if refugees come to the UK, I (and many others) want them to be the most deserving: women, children, elderly, not the fit young men, who have been selected from and screened in the camps.

Yes, screened: because if I was ISIS and planing terror attacks in Europe, I know exactly how I'd be getting my agents in...

I think a lot about refugees: like Help's, my family went through everything imaginable during World War II. When you grow up on stories of torture, summary execution and starvation, you know that the world can be a shitty place. You also know that it's a very complicated place as well. I resent the implication that those of us who don't espouse a 'fling wide the gates and let em all in' approach to this are heartless bastards.

emilybohemia · 25/01/2016 14:30

Help, I am not a 'girl' and don't know why you are calling me one. I am a forty one year old woman.

You seem to have no regard for people in similar circumstances and I wonder what you have learnt from your parents experiences. Why bring their experiences up to back up your prejudiced opinions? It just makes your theories all the more mind boggling.

I have a friend that used to wake up to a family members nightmares because of their experiences during the holocaust. He has been helping refugees because he sees what is happening all over again. Another friend, a refugee during the Bosnian war, has been helping refugees too. Their experiences have not led them to hate, suspicion and denigrating all Muslims.

If you don't know why they don't claim asylum in France, why not read up on it and get better informed? Some do apply for asylum there but are stuck in the camps.

When have I said we should recieve a quarter o the world's population into Europe.

One track mind? My only motive in posting on these threads is to counter the prejudice and senseless hate that I see at a time when it seems to burn like wildfire.

kesstrel · 25/01/2016 14:33

Emily said on the thread below that she lives in "eastern to central Europe". Which fits with her user name, I guess.

MariscallRoad · 25/01/2016 14:39
  1. There are several threads on Cologne in www.thestudentroom.co.uk
CalmYoBadSelf · 25/01/2016 14:45

"Hate, suspicion and denigrating Muslims", really? We seem to repeat over and over that nobody (except you it seems) is thinking anything about Cologne or immigration applies to all Muslims

Moreshabbythanchic · 25/01/2016 14:50

Emily I beg to differ, I haven't got the time or the inclination to search back through the threads, nor the desire to break MN rules but if you look back on your previous posts you have repeatedly mentioned that you live overseas.

As for any interest you think I have in your personal details I can assure you that I have completely nil.
