part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

Sportinguista: "The men from other parts of NA who are coming in as chancers are just making it harder for the genuine ones"

Most of those in the first overland crossing that we watched on TV were not Syrian or Iraqi. I got that from the horse's mouth (someone who was there) and it was clear to all that the majority were not refugees. But as they would not allow themselves to be processed they continued their journey to Germany & Austria who asked no questions as to eligibility. There is a big difference between someone from ME and an Eritrean or West African!

Petition signed and shared on my facebook page. How many friends have commented/signed/shared/liked? None.

Palebluedotty · 25/01/2016 09:09

Signed. Thanks to Help and everyone who got this up and running.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 25/01/2016 09:25

I have emailed Richard Littlejohn and received an automated reply in which he assures that he cannot reply to every email, but he does read every one.

DespicableBee · 25/01/2016 09:39

Where's the petition, I'd like to sign

TheElementsSong · 25/01/2016 09:48

I've received a reply from MNHQ about deleting the link in the very first post from Cologne2016, because that link refers to the rejected petition. I think MNHQ has misunderstood ..... waiting to hear again.
It would be good if the new petition link could be inserted at the very top, where the Threads are! Anything before 24 Jan is a reference to the rejected petition.

To make it easier, here is a clicky link to the petition:

Radio 4 Start the Week with Andrew Marr 9.00am - 9.30. Talking about Migration and Citizenship. Worth a listen.

www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/programmes/schedules

One of the guests is Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan. He has talked about volunteering in a hostel for unaccompanied minors in Italy.
www.conservativehome.com/thecolumnists/2015/09/daniel-hannan-mep-i-saw-the-migrant-crisis-first-hand-theres-no-way-the-eu-can-solve-it.html

He makes very good points about fairness and justice. If every person in need has the right to be looked after by Europe, then logically that right should be extended to everyone in the world who is that needy, which is probably billions not millions. We only take in those who are fittest and strongest who make it over here. He says that most people on the centre left would be appalled if a country said it was going to operate a "Darwinian" immigration and refugee policy of sending everyone on a perilous journey on which they might die, but those who survive get the prize of staying in our country. Yet this is what the EU is doing with its self-imposed rule of taking in everyone who makes it across the Mediterranean.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/01/2016 11:02

The link to sign the petition went into my junk mail folder for some reason. It's found and signed now, but just wanted to mention it in case anyone's looked only in their Inbox and believes they've not received it ...

Palebluedotty · 25/01/2016 11:05

And Woman's Hour has been discussing the risks for female refugees although I have not caught very much of it.

LumelaMme · 25/01/2016 11:24

I think he's saying there very lucidly what several of us having been saying much less lucidly for several threads...

sportinguista · 25/01/2016 11:32

And as we know, many who have come across the med aren't genuine refugees fleeing war or the most needy at all. Many of those are sadly back in the camps or even back in Syria, unable to flee at all...

VertigoNun · 25/01/2016 11:35

A point was made on another thread. We really should just take from camps near Syria. Those willing to break rules and pay people smugglers are of a certain character, the me me me type with little empathy for others and not someone who follows rules. What type of character commits mass sex crimes?

AllTheMadmen · 25/01/2016 11:48

I guess its a case to many of out of site and out of mind.

they only see the men at Calais but not the poor women and children abandoned and left struggling back at home - in camps or making the journey alone.

RE people following the rules vertigo, I cant say I wouldnt be doing the same if i was in their boots. I am not a sex attacker.

TwistedReach · 25/01/2016 11:48

Vertigo, I'm sorry but that is simply rubbish.
The desperate people I have met in the Calais camp have shown amazing generosity and empathy. They are humans and should not be idealised or denigrated anymore than anyone else. But it gives hope to what the human spirit can do in times of crisis. Which includes in Calais some selfless examples of looking after each other and volunteers.
To say that those in Calais are me me me, is an extraordinary and extremely derogatory assumption.

VertigoNun · 25/01/2016 11:52

There was a human rights solicitor on the other thread. They gave the impression they were not impressed with men abandoning their wife and children to the dangers they won't accept for themselves, for long periods of time.

sportinguista · 25/01/2016 11:53

I would much rather desparate families to have a chance of being taken direct from the camp than be exploited by those t**ts who were selling fake life jackets or people smugglers. If we could get the message out that Europe will only take direct from the camps and it will be assessed strictly on need it might help weed out the chancers (hopefully they wouldn't decide to infiltrate the camps). Then some of the most needy people could genuinely be helped and there would be a lot less scenes like that poor little boy who drowned this summer.

MrWriter · 25/01/2016 11:57

Hi ladies, just checking back in. Glad to see the petition is up and running, will sign and share.

VertigoNun · 25/01/2016 12:00

Yes I too think the government have it right taking direct from camps by Syria.

Palebluedotty · 25/01/2016 12:04

I also agree with David Cameron's policy of taking refugees from Syrian camps. It is far fairer than what is happening now due to the EU policy of non-refoulement which is well-intentioned but was never designed to cope with refugees and migrants in such numbers and is exacerbating the appalling number of deaths at sea dreadfully.

The fact that our meddling in the Middle East at the behest of the US has contributed to such flows of refugees from Syria and Iraq does not escape me though.

VertigoNun · 25/01/2016 12:06

No more lining the pockets of people smugglers and no more drownings/hardship when travelling.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 25/01/2016 12:09

pale the ME was going through changes also not anything to do with us, the people of syria tried to an up rising against their leader...it failed and got dragged into ISIS.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 25/01/2016 12:17

Twisted I am still waiting for you and op to explain why the Calais people are in Calais. They live in appalling conditions but they bear it because they want to get to UK and only the UK. If they had applied for sanctuary in France they would hv been processed by now and waiting for their papers. Please advise.
