part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

Twisted You want to share the wealth of the West? The countries from which the refugees come from were not poor countries. (I am speaking of refugees not economic migrants which you may be, so you are conflating all groups into your argument).

I urge you to listen to this short vid of a Saudi scholar talking about how important the West is, that it has been the catalyst for enlightenment of other nations and that Arabia can learn from the West rather than demonising it.

The Gulf states have a good standard of living. But the downside is that no one know has to make something, adjust or repair. That's why they import foreigners to do the most basic stuff - even Health & Safety Officers from Britain are advertised for - and that does not require an Einstein, I assure you. I know one who went there 2 yrs ago.

Is there any mixed bathing at swimming pools in the ME? Indeed are women even allowed to attend public pools?

I don't know, but islamqa.info has this to say:

Islam enjoins women to stay at home and not go out unnecessarily, so as to preserve their chastity, maintain their dignity and protect them from all evil

Muslim women going out to public centres and swimming pools is something that is emphatically forbidden, because it involves a number of evils and negative consequences

If these swimming pools are in public centres that are frequented by men and women, this is a great evil

sportinguista · 24/01/2016 16:51

So learning to swim at least for women and girls is considered a great evil, no wonder it's a lot of the women and young children that die on the crossing I expect most of them cannot swim.

Bonkers!

fourmummy · 24/01/2016 16:58

Puzzled I knew there was a reason why I read MN and neglect my children Grin

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 24/01/2016 17:01

Is this true? Polygamous women may receive full benefits.

PuzzledandPissedOff

If these swimming pools are in public centres that are frequented by men and women, this is a great evil.

The "evil" that this quote must be referring to is MEN who cannot control themselves. Somewhere down the line they have been told that women who want to swim dont actually want to swim, but want to attract men and therefore you can treat them as hookers.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2016 17:06

Perhaps interestingly - at least according to www.islam-laws.com/books/codeofpracticeforwest/40.htm - it seems young muslim men aren't supposed to go to a mixed swimming pool at all:

Question: Is it permissible for a Muslim man to go to a mixed swimming pool with the knowledge that the women there swimming suits form and would not listen to any admonishing?

Answer: Although looking without bad thoughts or lustful intentions at the women who are indecently dressed (and who would not listen to you if you wish to admonish them) is allowed, yet based on obligatory precaution, going to such places is absolutely forbidden

Moreshabbythanchic · 24/01/2016 17:08

Well done Help, signed and shared Grin.

emilybohemia · 24/01/2016 17:09

Gracekelly, I talked a lot about solutions in previous threads, noone was interested and I was called an apologist and minimiser. Not interested really in revisiting that old ground. You can read my comments on the previous threads and there is a thread on the no excuses campaign by Germany women too which proposes many measures to tackle sexual violence.

Was this 'enthisiastic flirtation' Grace?

CouncilOfLadies · 24/01/2016 17:18

Signed petition and shared on Twitter. Thank you, Help, and everyone on these threads.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2016 17:19

Some interesting stuff here about do's and don'ts around the world - as with most sites I've no idea how authoritative they're believed to be, but fascinating all the same. By the way, there's a useful clickable index of countries at the start ...

MamaMary · 24/01/2016 17:50

Petition signed.

Thanks Help.

Tomorrow I'll share it with friends and family and ask them to sign.

AllTheMadmen · 24/01/2016 17:56

Well done Help.

I preferred one of the earlier versions, however, I am under no illusions that this petition will lead to concrete changes.

What I hope it will do however is provide a platform for anyone who feels the same to add their voice too. It also sends a message to Parliament that we are worried about the attacks in Europe.

I hope everyone still emails their MP, and the woman minister and the home secretary.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 24/01/2016 18:03

Also email MEPs.

Mine (Labour) hasn't replied yet.

Ask your MP if they are willing to sign parliamentary early day motion 953, linked to earlier, which concerns the initial minimisation by mainstream media.

fourmummy · 24/01/2016 18:03

Help Well done. It's one of the few ways that we can have our voice heard. It's important.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 24/01/2016 18:06

Thanks Vertigo I have asked MNHQ to amend. It appears only MN can do this, not one of us.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 24/01/2016 18:08

I think someone should start a petition that HOC increases its limit from 300 characters to 400!
