part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

It does not matter from which "wing" information arrives, so long as it is factual. To deny that an event happened because a trustworthy report came in from a wing you do not like is daft. It's like deciding at a RTA that you are not going to use a witness account because the witnes sounds too posh, too manor house and you cant stand the rich.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 21:47

widow Hmm

The tensions and the far right getting hold of this whole crisis has been mentioned many times on this thread.

People being forced to the far right has also been mentioned.

People in crisis ignored in the left wing press has been high lighted.

Just like the left ignored masses of the UK population and who listened, who did they flock too?

what do people expect?

really what?

what the guardian has omitted is jaw dropping. There is a saying in history

"Omission is The. Greatest. Lie"

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 21:49

I must say I have never read the Express before and as some one else said, reading it made me feel a little grubby it amazed me how its never even mentioned on mumsnet, all bile is reversed for the Mail.

But as Newstatesmen said earlier, it made her feel grubby, me too but its going to be part of my reading now as well.

WidowWadman · 23/01/2016 21:54

Help what makes a report "trustworthy" in your opinion?

ConferencePear · 23/01/2016 22:06

Some of the migrants who end up in Calais can and do apply for asylum in France. There were reports in local newspaper called SudOuest that forty of them were being accommodated in a disused holiday village in the Dordogne while their applications were considered. The ones at Calais are determined to go to the UK.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 23/01/2016 22:17

As this story was breaking i did not trust Breitbart reports due to its bad reputation but I discovered that their info on Sweden , Helsinki and the German cities was searchable in the relevant national newspapers with quoting from police statements. The translate function on newspaper reports is a boon.

The Guardian yesterday in reporting French PM Manuel Valls' speech omitted to mention his referencing of Cologne. At least BBC left that in.

unlucky83 · 23/01/2016 22:28

Media bias....
this is the bbc report of an incident at a train station (about 1.07)

listen to how the incident is described

This is what actually happened

I find it shocking the BBC can misrepresent something like this...
I think you have to look at a variety of sources to have any idea of what is actually happening -and thank goodness for social media.

As to the riot in Calais and the well dressed woman with a placard - not surprised at all.

I was reading a facebook page of one of the groups that help out in the Calais Jungle (maybe even the one twisted is involved with) trying to get an idea of both sides of the argument... and honestly it made me cringe. I don't know if I can explain very well but some of the things written sounded like they were talking about rescuing stray dogs or something - like the immigrants were pets. One was of an immigrant now in the UK helping out and it was really patronising - 'look what a clever boy he is' .
And some of the supporters came across as 'dogooders' - look what a great person I am I help out these poor disadvantaged and discriminated against groups - I'm just so 'right on'...
Actually reminded me of an Anti-Nazi league march I went on many years ago. There were very few non-white faces there (and we were in an ethnically diverse area of London - I lived there and there were few locals present).
A few trouble makers - trying to stir things up (suspect they were serial protesters) who were doing things like spitting at the feet of the policemen lining the route and getting right in their faces to call them pigs ... The vast majority were white middle class champagne socialists - quite a few students - who really didn't have a clue....it is this second lot that the Calais Jungle dogooders remind me of. (I didn't finish the march - I left in disgust.)
Not going off at a tangent but I had a v. interesting conversation with the (non-white) organiser of a similar group - and although we didn't agree on everything one thing we did was he scathing about the ANL...thought very much what I did....)

Moreshabbythanchic · 23/01/2016 22:32

What delightful people these migrants are, a bonus to any European country.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3413728/Gang-migrants-arrested-sexually-assaulting-women-masturbating-historic-German-swimming-baths.html

WidowWadman · 23/01/2016 22:36

Moreshabby as per some links above the claims in the letter accusing migrants of this are met with some scepticism as how factual they are, and how much just politically motivated.
Banning people from public swimming pools is very much in fashion at the moment.

LongWayRound · 23/01/2016 22:36

A couple more clips:

- at one point the interviewer actually asks if a Muslim cleric who listens to music could be accepted by the people... - this dates from 2014 and gives a Syrian, secular viewpoint on the events in Syria...

I know this is going some way from the subject of the thread, or I'd post more links. But if you start watching these videos there are links to many more interesting ones.

Moreshabbythanchic · 23/01/2016 22:40

Widow why do you and your friends keep denying these reports? They cant all be wrong.

LongWayRound · 23/01/2016 22:47

unlucky The discrepancy between those two reports is (almost) incredible...

HelenaDove · 23/01/2016 23:43

Im left wing and their publications have been ignoring a lot of the things to do with this.

In fact i see parallels with the way they also report on social housing. There are good HAs but there are quite a few who are leaving tenants without heating or hot water for months on end including pensioners and the disabled. Refusing to attend a tenants home when there are leaks burst pipes etc.

All we ever hear from certain left wing commentators though is how bad the private landlords are.

The right dont want to know because they despise poorer people

The left dont want to know because they wont have anything said against social housing. Thankfully there are some great social housing bloggers out there who are getting the truth out.

I think social housing is great......but not in the form it is now with huge salaries paid at the top while they get into property development and yet claim to be not for profit organisations.

Did not mean to go off topic. I just see parallels.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 23/01/2016 23:57

Helena I recognise what you say about HAs. You are right I have not seen mention of it in press.

GeekLove · 24/01/2016 01:29

At a bit of a tangent, how is the government petition about making protection of women a priority with the aim of preventing what happened on the continent happening here.

I only hope this will make people examine rape culture and why rates for conviction of sexual assault have historically been woeful.
Now we have an influx of young men who are less reserved about how they view women in terms of sex objects, we need to be aware that this view is already present before this crisis.

DadWasHere · 24/01/2016 02:42

Of course people are aware, GeekLove. But articulating what is going on in terms of reminding people they can and have drowned in swimming pools when a dam they live beneath is at hazard of cracking open shows either a denial of scope or, at worst, a perverse hope that wider disaster will shake enough people up to better address the dangers of water. But, unlike water, this will not soak into the ground or evaporate in a few months, it will be many years in the making. Down the track you may well end up with better outcomes in the courts and worse outcomes in society, going hand in hand. What use is greater victory in court if balanced by worse defeats in society? Its that question that vexes me about the United States, with its rate of incarceration being the highest of any nation on earth.

WidowWadman · 24/01/2016 09:59

Interesting stuff on banning people from public pools because of "untoward behaviour". I'm sure at the time people were just as convinced as posters on this thread that these bans were justified and the reports of "untoward behaviour " factual and rooted in ethnicity.

pressechronik1933.dpmu.de/blick-in-die-zeit-vom-18-8-1933-2-badeverbot-fur-juden/

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 24/01/2016 10:20

Widow of course it is an awful situation to have to ban anyone from those swimming baths but if those reports are true and if migrant men aren't banned then you are effectively banning women.

It's a horrible situation all round but I don't think you can compare this to the jews' plight in 30s germany because in that instance the State was actually out to get the Jews. The current State isn't out to get migrants, quite the opposite, they are doing their utmost to cover up these attacks on their own citizens in order to continue to protect migrants and circumvent a backlash against them. And they are right to be afraid because some of the anti-migrant hatred under any youtube video is scary. But they are wrong to cover up the truth.

sportinguista · 24/01/2016 10:25

There have been a number of bans in public pools locally for people ranging from persistent and offensive poor hygiene, heavy petting in pool and other sexual behaviour, defecating in changing rooms, misuse of equipment, trying to break vending machines, bombing etc.

I've no idea of the ethnicity of all of these offenders but if there was a particular group that was persistently causing a problem I suspect they would be asked to leave and not return.

I would fully expect my local pool to ban anyone defecating in the childrens pool as it would mean it would be unusable for my child and other children. There would definitely be outcry if stuff like that happened on a regular basis. For the record many of the attendees at my child's swimming lessons are Muslim and I expect they would want it dealt with like a shot and would be horrified what ever group was involved. In fact some of them might find that they would be taken aside and a 'quiet word' was had from some of the community leaders here. There would be no tolerance for spoiling a community facility. Surprised some local communities in Germany aren't coming out and saying, that this is not how we behave!

VertigoNun · 24/01/2016 10:27

I think the German population have been threatened that it's a hate crime.

WidowWadman · 24/01/2016 10:28

Theydon't you could of course simply ban those who misbehave rather than do a blanket ban based on a group of people based on where they're from. That way you could address the issue without going all 1930s.

sportinguista · 24/01/2016 10:41

Maybe some of the Muslim community leaders who've been in Germany for years could take the lead on acceptable behaviour and have that 'quiet word'. It may be more effective.

Yes I imagine they were banning on a case by case basis at first but I guess it became like a revolving door for some groups and they decided it was more effective to blanket ban at this stage. no one has mentioned it being permanent or female/child refugees being included and I imagine older males coming in with children and family groups would not be included.

In some shops around here there are bans on more than 3 school children being in the shop because of issues with shop lifting. But no one takes it to mean that every child is a thief, unfortunately just some are

GraceKellysLeftArm · 24/01/2016 10:43

I think TPTB have spinning heads right now and don't have a fucking clue how to handle it.

We need to quit dripping on about "conviction rates for sexual offences have been abysmal historically" and rise the fuck up and figure out how we're going to deal with this self-imposed, self-imported problem.

Whilst the Brits (and I'm sure the rest of Western Europe) are quite au fait with sending nude pics via dating apps - we (as a population) know that we don't ejaculate in the swimming pool or poo in the kiddy play pool.

You know, signs on the swimming pool from the seventies - "no diving, no bombing, no ducking, no shitting, no raping, no ejaculation" type stuff.

This thread (and stories currently leaking into the media) is bringing back so many memories of my living in Europe and further East. Like how we as a family stopped going to the local pools because of the "creepy sexual shit" which was going on and watching teenage girls get groped under water by these youths.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 24/01/2016 11:38

Widow What makes a report trustworthy in your opinion?
