part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

but you are notably silent on how we can help the genuine refugees without leaving ourselves open to risk from those who wish us harm and seem to suggest anybody trying to think how to do so is racist

some posters refuse to believe that any of the migrants are anything less than genuine fleeing from war torn Syria.

so of course there is silence because there is no recognition of any other type of migrant!

which is the attitude that has led us to this place now....which will mean more attacks on indigenous women, and more attacks on genuine refugees, because the criminal element makes everyone afraid and no one aknowledges them or deals with them.

Leading to more fear and more....attacks all round.

The sad irony is, the people who hold these views that lead to violence, rape, and attack think they are lovely sweet kind humane people Hmm.

when in fact they are highly dangerous and do no one any favours.

Isis KILL MUSLIMS. You need to get that in your head help. They do not follow Islam. Many Muslims have spoken against them. Muslims and Isis are not the same thing

ISIS kill Muslims but they very much follow Islam.

Emily you did say way back you actually had little understanding or knowledge of Islam and this whole situation, this article is very enlightening:

www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/03/what-isis-really-wants/384980/

The reality is that the Islamic State is Islamic. Very Islamic. Yes, it has attracted psychopaths and adventure seekers, drawn largely from the disaffected populations of the Middle East and Europe. But the religion preached by its most ardent followers derives from coherent and even learned interpretations of Islam

I know A few of us benefited from reading this very clear informative piece a few months ago....

Its a fast moving thread isn't it, but I do think this article would be beneficial.

Another story from a german swimming bath.

jungefreiheit.de/kultur/gesellschaft/2016/asylanten-nutzen-schwimmbecken-als-klo-und-belaestigen-frauen/

Basically they did disgusting things in the hot tub and also tried to get into the womens changing room. Lifeguards had to protect the women and girls.

januarybrown1998 · 23/01/2016 15:16

CalmYo, these threads are about the attacks on women in Cologne, not refugees

Actually, I believe the discussion has widened, as media begin to report more openly, attacks against women and grow across Germany, and in Sweden, Finland and Norway, by immigrants.

I think it's dangerous for genuine, peaceful regugees to insist that they are indistinguishable from intimidating, assaulting, economic migrants with no respect for the women and girls of their host countries.

To confuse the two is disingenuous and dangerous.

The public mood is swinging and if you insist on claiming the two groups are one and the same, genuine refugees are in danger of losing the public goodwill they have rightly come to expect.

Groups of young men sticking their fingers in women and girls before robbing them do not strike the general public as the disneyfied refugees who just want to work and come home for their tea.

Please don't insult anyone's intelligence by insisting they are one and the same.

emily what are your views on the article posted upthread where Sikhs and Hindus have condemned those involved in the attacks on women.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 23/01/2016 15:53

Young Muslim men and women travel from UK to join ISIS. Three came from my area. So something is pulling these people to support IS in other lands. It must be a very strong belief that what IS is doing is for the greater good of Islam. Why else would they leave their families and risk their lives? They presumably believe that the IS way of being a muslim is the best way.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 23/01/2016 15:58

Emily "Help, I don't see anything sinister in the video you posted. Many evangelical Christians say similar things.I did find the channel it is from curious though. It included a 'pigs head protest at refugee camp' and anti immigrant protests by the far right."

I have no idea what you are talking about - a pig's head, where? I have to say that I do find you sinister.

VertigoNun · 23/01/2016 16:16

Corbyn has been to speak to refugees himself in mainland Europe. I hope this is a sign he wants to look deeper into a solution for refugees and women.

emilybohemia · 23/01/2016 16:21

The channel you posted the video from help is full of far right propaganda, including a video of a 'protest' of pigs heads. Are you comfortable in sharing far right propaganda, help?

I hope Corbyn wants to help all refugees, not excluding men.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 23/01/2016 16:26

I posted a video, not a channel. You are making things up again.

VertigoNun · 23/01/2016 16:28

I think men have to take a step back, the womens and children should be sent here first. The men are safe enough for now. The bbc show that there is a problem with rubbish again in the refugee camp. I recall you claim I was a liar when I pointed that out before!

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 16:33

Emily, did you read the link above? From Mariscal?

Why would you not want THE most vulnerable refugees taken/helped first?

TwistedReach · 23/01/2016 16:33

Corbyn has been today in the Calais and Dunkirk camps. I imagine he will be more concerned about the fact that so many are freezing, sick, hopeless and living in utterly neglected and dehumanising conditions, than either their sex or their tidiness (in the hellish muddy squalor that they are trying to exist in).

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 16:35

UNHCR urged European governments to do more to protect female and child refugees in October. But Amnesty International's new report raises serious doubts about the current safety of particularly vulnerable groups of asylum seekers.

One million refugees will try to enter Europe in 2016, UN predicts

"Many reported that in almost all of the countries they passed through they experienced physical abuse and financial exploitation, being groped or pressured to have sex by smugglers, security staff or other refugees," Amnesty International said.

Palebluedotty · 23/01/2016 16:36

I think David Attenborough is spot on with his comments about women's empowerment. There are strong correlations between women's rights and a country's economic prosperity, citizen health and quality of life, as well as between women's education and fertility rates. When women are allowed control of their own body, they can choose a number of children that suits them, at a time that suits them. The single best way to stop the increase in the global population would be to give all women a good education and access to contraception and allow them to use it as they choose. But very misogynistic cultures don't like doing that.

It's so ironic that misogynist men from patriarchal countries want to come to liberal democracies for the quality of life, but don't or won't comprehend that it's ideals like equal rights for all people that makes European countries the desirable places they are.

It was notable when ISIS first issued their list of priorities and intentions that their first was simply to state that they would be an "Islamic State". Their second statement was not that everyone should pray x times a day or similar, but that women should get back in the home where they belong. Grabbing power back off women was that high up their list. And look at the horrific state of the place.

Women having rights in a society is good for everyone in that society, men included.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 16:36

twisted Corybn and whoever else can go and look at them and do whatever, however Amnesty and UNHCR are urging Europe to do more to protect women and children.

VertigoNun · 23/01/2016 16:38

Who is chucking food around outside the tents, in turn attracting rats? I told you this was a concern in the summer.

TwistedReach · 23/01/2016 16:41

Doing more for refugee women and children, does not mean have to mean doing less for refugee men.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 23/01/2016 16:41

So tell me Emily why do so many European-born muslims (men & women) travel to Syria and Iraq to take up arms for, or support in other ways, the Islamic State? If Islamic State is un-Islamic and you say "not Muslim" why do they go?

januarybrown1998 · 23/01/2016 16:41

Are there any statistics to show how many residents of the Calais and Dunkirk camps are genuine refugees and how many economic migrants?

It's also my understanding that they are predominantly male?

OP posts:
emilybohemia · 23/01/2016 16:42

Willbeat, the UNHCR do not urge Europe to only let in women and children and exclude men. They urge Europe to put in place more legal routes for refugees to reach Europe.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 16:43

But the women and children are an urgent priority, its the women and children who are being sexually exploited.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 23/01/2016 16:43

UNHCR have highlighted that women and children are being attacked, abused and need help.

VertigoNun · 23/01/2016 16:43

It was 90% Men living in the Jungle, in the summer. I think the rubbish problem was down to men thinking it's not on their list of responsibilities.
