part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

This is a great list, glen, but I should tell you that I do not do social media, never have. I can help with emailing, but that's it.

CalmYoBadSelf · 20/01/2016 17:14

I don't think the government have much influence over what the media chooses to publish and the German government would probably argue that any cover-up was not them but unauthorised lower level stuff so not much point including it as they'll just say it is not relevant

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 17:15

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults hitherto unknown in Europe. UK women must be free to live without intimidation or sexual violence. We ask Government to debate preventative measures & give assurance regarding adequate legislation, policing, the pursuit of prosecutions, and prompt media reporting in such an event.

How many words again? This has got 55.

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 17:17

Calm - I like your draft.

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 17:18

Will - I like you preventative measures sentence.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 17:20

Nor do I Help, which is why I volunteered to do the list!! Hopefully we can use it to get a co-ordinated effort going online to get the petition noticed.

Sorry but I do feel this needs to be said...

This is not a political party issue. This is an issue which affects all women, no matter what colour rosette they choose to wear. We can't let this get bogged down with petty politics. As long as this is being kept in the public eye I don't mind who is shouting about it and if people are really going to disregard what someone is saying because of the party they represent then they need to take a look at themselves and their own prejudices.

We need to pull together on this.

That being said, I do think we need a 'register' (for want of a better word) of who has been contacted, if they have replied, if they support us, don't support us or are indifferent (so have provided a 'non' reply so to speak) Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm high on bleach fumes!!

CalmYoBadSelf · 20/01/2016 17:28

Help and glen I don't do Twitter either so can't help with that and have no idea what has been going down over there

januarybrown1998 · 20/01/2016 17:28

glen well said and Wine to counter bleach fumes!

Any techie types who could set up a document to record MP/MEP responses?

OP posts:
glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 17:32

Tonight, when the child is in bed, I'll attempt an online spreadsheet using google sheets, unless anyone can do better?

Moreshabbythanchic · 20/01/2016 17:44

I don't think we can count on any support from my MP, despite emailing him twice he has not responded to either.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 17:48

If people want to PM me their MP, when they contacted them and any response they've had I'm happy to get a spread sheet going. I won't add names, it'll be totally anon.

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 17:48

Do we need a list of what the government can actually do, and then, once established, ask for it?

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 17:54

fourmummy - yes agree.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 18:05

Yes, I think so. I also think, once the petition is underway it's worth looking at a co-ordinated complaint to the Press Complaints Commission and the BBC Trust.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 18:07

This is the lay of the land. The Mumsnetter who assembled the original petition & links and submitted it from herself + 5 does not want to do the resubmission. Therefore I am currently waiting for those 5 supporters to email me their names, email addresses and I think postcodes so that I can type that into the new submission.

ItsJustaUsername · 20/01/2016 18:34

I've been offline a few days, disappointed to see the petition was rejected. Happy to see a possible resubmission though.
I emailed Nicky Morgan, Teressa May and Nicola Sturgeon over a week ago and have had no response.
There seems to be a steady stream of stories of sex attacks coming out, it does seem to me that the world, or at least the media, is finally taking notice.
This article is interesting, Sihk and Hindu leaders calling for these attacks to be classed as hate crimes (apologies for source )
www.express.co.uk/news/uk/635837/UK-at-risk-of-Cologne-sex-attacks-Europe-crime

These attacks imo have been a bit of a poltical catalyst, the future of the EU seems very uncertain right now. We just need to make sure that the victims are not forgotten and women's rights along with them.

ItsJustaUsername · 20/01/2016 19:05

This lot seem to have the jist of things. The video's worth a watch. www.iamawake.co/cologne-sex-attacks-failed-cover-up-attempt-begs-questioning/

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 19:34

I've added the following to our list

Saira Kahn
Rape Crisis
Womens Aid
Tom Break
Alistair Carmichael
Baroness Jane Bonham-Carter
Helena Bonham Carter
Lord Johnathan Marks
Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece
Hilary Benn
Maria Eagle
Lord Falconer
Karl Turner
Chris Bryant
Jonathan Ashworth
Michael Gove
Philip Hammond
Baroness Stowell
John Whittingdale
Chris Grayling
Suzanne Evans

These are primarily politicians who either hold relevant ministerial portfolios, are spokespeople for the party or I think may be interested. By relevant I mean either Womens spokesperson, justice, culture, leader of the house, leader of the lords or similar.

Again, if you think I've missed anyone please shout up. Is anyone free to help me track down contacts for them? The list is at 93 people now!

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 19:36

That's brilliant Help, huge thanks yes I'm breaking out the nice stuff!

WildeWoman · 20/01/2016 19:43

'hitherto unknown in Europe' doesn't make grammatical sense.
'previously unheard of in Europe' makes more sense.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 20/01/2016 19:47

UK women must be free to live without intimidation or sexual violence.

IMO UK women is not needed. Why not just "Women must be free to live ...."?

I would be more likely to sign. Although I am pretty sure the govmt will claim there already is legislation covering this.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 19:59

Okay ladies. I need 3 supporters for the petition.

Name
Postal Code
email address

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 20:03

Wilde. NOT ENOUGH SPACE! By all means submit further amendment but FIRST ensure the word count is not more than 300 characters. Otherwise it's not fair just sending out suggestions in this way.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 20:33

Can anyone else add their names? Their details aren't published, no one but Help will know who you are and if she tells anyone we'll take away her gin and crisps.

Is it worth posting in Feminist Chat / Activism to see if anyone over there will lend a hand?

CalmYoBadSelf · 20/01/2016 20:43

I posted this upthread. Is it no good?
I'm just wondering if we need to simplify the headline

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults previously unknown in Europe. We demand that Government protect women's rights and freedom by putting in place legislation and police training to ensure that similar attacks do not happen in the UK

This has 273 characters.

I'm not sure we need the UK women must be free to live without intimidation or sexual violence as everybody should know that
