part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

No problems if not obviously

I'm just trying to think what exactly we want them to do if they said the original one was not specific enough

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 20:46

I like it, Calm.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 20:46

Everyone should know that Calm but you just need to look at the papers recently to see they don't!

GraceKellysLeftArm · 20/01/2016 20:49

I think it's trying too hard not to "offend". Demanding women's rights? We already have women's rights - this will be glossed over. Train the police? Are we asking the police to recruit tenfold to create an army to protect us?

We know what the problem is - don't lose sight of that.

Unless we are specific this sounds like just another "women's manifesto" with all the gravitas to change policy as a bra-wearing "slut march".

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 20:50

Calm I think it's perfect.

Agree that 'UK women must be free to live without intimidation or sexual violence' takes up too many words.

Moreshabbythanchic · 20/01/2016 20:56

Help do you need any more supporters, I'll do it if you need me to.

CalmYoBadSelf · 20/01/2016 20:57

Grace It's not "demanding women's rights", it is demanding the government protect women's rights and freedom

I'm just trying to think what we want, which is freedom from sexual assault and the intimidation caused by that. How can that be achieved? Not by anything we do individually, it has to come from the government (legislation), the justice system (physical protection of women and arrest and prosecution of perpetrators) and the media in reporting it and helping hold agencies to account.

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 21:02

'We know what the problem is - don't lose sight of that.'

"Grace" - yes, how do you think we should spell it out?

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 21:03

With Moreshabby we need one more person, I think.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 21:04

O R slightly different version:

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults previously unknown in Europe. We demand that Government protects women's rights and freedom by expanding police training so that similar attacks do not happen in the UK, and for the courts to recognise this new phenomenon.

Disappointed by private eye. Just a very small item on this satirising merkel on page 29. I thought they might pick this up.

EasterRobin · 20/01/2016 21:13

That's good, Help.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 21:17

I saw a fab mock-up of Merkel dressed in a hijab scarf. Not sure which publication .....

Palebluedotty · 20/01/2016 21:18

Glen for the list:
Andrew Neil
Maajid Nawaz of the Quilliam Foundation think tank

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 21:20

Thanks Pale

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 21:20

Help - yes that's fine, and mentioning the phenomenon is good.

Grace - do you think we are being too politically correct? Tip toeing around the issue of migrants in this attack?

CalmYoBadSelf · 20/01/2016 21:39

Help That looks good. Just a thought, should it be the courts or the law or even the legislature? I'm not sure of the technicalities of it

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 21:46

Personally I am not keen on the 21.04 version at all. I couldn't elucidate as to why..i prefer the version without the walking round without intimidation.

TBH I think a couple of versions should be done, then if one is rejected submit the other immedialty. until the combination is right

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 21:53

Without 1 more person we can't submit the petition.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 20/01/2016 21:54

Inkanta - I hate to use the term PC, but yes, I think it is.

I really don't do tact - but I think if you want impact then you've got to channel your inner Katie Hopkins.

We need it to be in layman's terms so that every man and his dog can grasp the issue - not just pontificating to the "professional" academics/feminists.

We are all feminists and we all believe in democracy - hence these threads. Don't lose this movement by being afraid to step on toes.

It needs chatter. It needs debate.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 21:57

grace forgive me I am tired but have you put forward your own version then to give us an idea of what you mean?

within word limit...

peopleperson04 · 20/01/2016 22:08

You do know MN has had a sudden influx of trolls and people in Twitter of a description matching those perpetrators in Calogne made veiled threats regarding this petition? Anyone fronting it will be on a hit list, a petition is not going to happen.

Could someone elaborate on the above post?

If menacing threats are being made against Mumsnetters on Twitter, then surely that should be a police matter?

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 22:42

Not sure, I don't do social media.

1 more volunteer needed to get the petition live. If you can help, can you PM Help with your name, email and post code. Neither your email or postcode will be published.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 23:24

Signing off for the night, thanks to all involved in this.

If anyone has a spare half an hour to track down contact details can they PM me, we have a list of over 100 people to get in touch with to publicise the petition if we can get the fifth person.

night all.
