part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

I won't put my name to giving a coverup culture more funds. By all means you can. I would like the police held to account more personally.

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 15:49

Glen You did all that with a pukey five year old? seriously impressed

Legislation covers quite a lot. Singling out policing, or the media cover ups, or anything else plays into the govt.'s hands by absolving that level of decision making from responsibility.

fakenamefornow · 20/01/2016 15:54

Thank you for that link MariscallRoad I know wanting on street abuse of women counted as hate crime doesn't address this particular issue, but I personally think it meets the criteria though.

Anyway, I'm leaving these threads now because of VertigoNun insulting me with the implication I'm a racist ukiper and a member of the far right, couldn't be more wrong BTW which is why I'm so upset about it.

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 15:54

Agree that we should go with Help's version given that it has received advice from the relevant parties.

unlucky83 · 20/01/2016 15:58

glen I think we should add Saira Khan - she is outspoken and muslim and was subjected to this kind of assault filming in Pakistan (although apparently just created a bit of a stir on this morning or something arguing with Lauren Booth - maybe we need to check she didn't say anything dodgy...)

unlucky83 · 20/01/2016 16:00

Oh I meant to say - I've been busy and not able to check in but I am so pleased someone is taking this up again - I can't wait to sign!

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 16:00

The petition could ask the government for four things -

Adequate legislation
Police given training and able to deal with such an incident (like Cologne)
Assurance that there would be prosecutions
Assurance that the media wouldn't be gagged

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 16:05

Inkata good idea - but how to fit it all in?

MariscallRoad · 20/01/2016 16:06

fourmummy I agree too

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 16:06

fourmummy

A really good sentence! Smile

MrWriter · 20/01/2016 16:07

Wow! This is my first chance to check back in from Friday and I cant believe the amount of posts. So good to see it going strong, but also pants that the petition has been rejected.

Keep up the good work!

Moreshabbythanchic · 20/01/2016 16:15

Unlucky I was about to suggest Saira Khan too, I watched her on This Morning and she made some very sensible points, unlike Lauren Booth who just sat there with a very supercilious smirk on her face.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 16:26

The petition just needs to get up to the debate level. The actual demands are unlikely to ever be instituted. It just needs 100k signatures so that the issues are debated and kept in the public eye.

i agree.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 16:30

Can someone PM with ref to this being infiltrated etc and all the vague references to twitter. please.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 16:39

Your draft is great, but it's 309 characters. This is the problem that ALL of us in the backroom had last week. We know what we want to say but are SO constrained - and of course the final result does not pack sufficient punch.

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 16:41

Help Yes. We need that really great sentence.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 16:44

four I like your version with the adequate legislation

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 16:47

Added.

January, when you get 5 can you PM me the journalist list you mentioned please :)

What can I say fourmummy, I am just a supermum trying to do her bit to make the world a better place or in reality I'm trying to get out of bleaching the bathroom for the 4th time today whilst letting the child have unlimited ipad time just so I don't have to play sodding shopkins again!! ;)

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 16:50

I think the priority is getting the petition out there (Thanks Help)

If we all sign and contact both our MP's and the relevant ministers then we can extend the debate as necessary. But we must get it to the debate level whilst these incidents are still fresh in the public consciousness.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 16:52

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults hitherto unknown in Europe. UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation or sexual violence. We ask Government to debate preventative measures & give assurance that those responsible will be prosecuted

Recent High Volume sex assaults on women across the EU, hirto unknown in Europe.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 20/01/2016 16:53

to get it to debate level we need

someone to front it - ie lead it and put their name down.

five people to sign it to submit it.

Then once its live everyone else can sign it.

januarybrown1998 · 20/01/2016 16:53

fakename I am very sorry that you feel insulted and I urge you to stay, at lest keep reading and sign?

This is, I believe, an issue for women, whatever our political colours. So I also urge that we avoid sneery comments about politicians who are helping us and let the ones who ignore our emails, send patronising or obfuscating replies be recorded without comment and thus let us all see who prioritises women's rights.

I am not so naive as to think there are parties or individuals who will seek to make political capital from recent events (and shame on them), but it would be a great pity if people felt this petition was politically rather than socially motivated if that makes sense?

Anyway, Flowers to anyone who has been upset; we have attempted to keep these threads focussed on what is a very frightening and emotive issue, so feelings have run high.

Thank you so very much to all those working on the revised petition. It's important.

Fake you should hear what I've been called in my time. Water off a duck's back Grin

LumelaMme · 20/01/2016 17:07

I second the thanks to all of you still plugging away. I got waaaay too involved last week given the constraints on my time, so I'm pulling back a bit for now, but I will keep an eye on the thread.

CalmYoBadSelf · 20/01/2016 17:11

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults hitherto unknown in Europe. We demand that Government protect women's rights and freedom by putting in place legislation and police training to ensure that similar attacks do not happen in the UK

Is this any help? I don't have a character count thingy (well I'm sure I do but it is a new laptop and I'm damned if I can find it). I like the "women have a right to..." bit but we shouldn't need to tell them that
