part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

Just spoke to my contact in Petitions Cttee again. She is running it by the Clerk. T.B.A.

MariscallRoad · 20/01/2016 14:03

I am not legal. This is a forum. Writing to the Minister for Equality of Women for views and the Shadow one as well might be an idea. The Committee response to the submitted petition was "t’s not clear what the petition is asking". Examples of approved petitions have been given and I have noticed they ask something 'specific' to be done/created.

A worth read is also the government response to petition.parliament.uk/petitions/105991 and its debate.

MamaMary · 20/01/2016 14:08

That is not possible.,

Sorry, Help, my mistake. You have obviously researched this and know the score.

I am thinking about being the petitioner

That would be great if you could.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 20/01/2016 14:37

Another poster has pointed out that the last sentence in the petition is ambiguous, which it is. I hv received some suggestions by email from the House of Commons, and put this together. The ord "travel" seemed to confuse the HOC Petitions Committee, so I have left it out.

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults hitherto unknown in Europe. Women in UK must be free from intimidation or sexual violence. We ask Government to bring forward proposals to ensure that attacks on women such as those seen in Europe do not happen in the UK.

VertigoNun · 20/01/2016 14:46

If they are happy with that, go for it.

Palebluedotty · 20/01/2016 14:48

I know a petition is not yet up but thanks to this thread I have written to my MP, using the very easy website www.writetothem.com/write Among other things, I have asked them if they would consider signing Gregory Campbell's Early Day Motion that someone posted a link to earlier.

Thanks to the person who provided Giles Fraser's name.

AnnaForbes · 20/01/2016 14:49

Just skim reading as at work and about to dash off for school run. I'll happily support the petition again. I was very disappointed that our first one was rejected, I am sure some were gleeful.

I don't want this to fade away.

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 14:51

Help This is good, but this part:

bring forward proposals

is vague.

Palebluedotty · 20/01/2016 14:53

I like it Help

VertigoNun · 20/01/2016 15:00

We don't want our media silenced or controled, even Giles. Scrap that bit.

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 15:00

Help - seems alright to me.

Does the clerk think that's enough information to be accepted this time or does it need more specifics about what needs to be done?

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 15:02

Vertigo - yes, you have a few more specifics in your draft.

fourmummy · 20/01/2016 15:20

On New Year’s Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass sex assaults hitherto unknown in Europe. Women in UK must be free from intimidation or sexual violence. We ask Government to ensure that adequate legislation is in place to so that attacks on women such as those seen in Europe do not happen in the UK

because they can argue that legislation is already in place

VertigoNun · 20/01/2016 15:22

It was a policing failure compounded by a delayed misogynistic press and Mayor response. We don't want our press gagged so we need to press politicians to press the police on this.

VertigoNun · 20/01/2016 15:26

Poor English. We don't want to gag the media. We should focus on the politicians ordering the police around. The politicians can then showboat they are not misogynistic HmmWink like the media. Giles, looking at you!

MariscallRoad · 20/01/2016 15:26

HelpTheAnimalsFirst it is getting clearer but the last sentence needs bit more tidy. Perhaps "To ensure measures and funding are in place to Police... ". Dont forget there are cuts!

VertigoNun · 20/01/2016 15:31

Nye wasn't a police funding issue. There were loads of police because there was a terror alert. The police did nothing then covered up.

Big problem at the moment here. Sad case of Poppy and Rotherham police coverups and poor policing.

I don't think we should get them more funding. Hold police to account I say.

Inkanta · 20/01/2016 15:34

Asking for these specifics -

... Government to ensure adequate legislation and for police to be equipped to tackle and bring prosecutions and for a prompt media response.

VertigoNun · 20/01/2016 15:37

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3408237/Rotherham-detective-taped-warning-alleged-child-grooming-victim-police-not-evidence.html

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3407965/Reopen-criminal-case-against-Poppi-Worthington-s-father-says-former-Justice-Minister.html

The police framed a government minister. They don't need more money they need to stop institutional abuse of their powers and to do their jobs properly.

This is yesterdays and could be submitted with the previous.

MariscallRoad · 20/01/2016 15:44

VertigoNun I did not mean cuts are in German police (since I do not know what they have there) I mean cuts exist in UK and funding of measures should be included.

glenthebattleostrich · 20/01/2016 15:45

As help has had advice from the petitions office I think we go with her draft.

I've put together this list from the last threads, PM's and a couple of my own ideas (!) I'm working on finding if they are on twitter and email addresses but I have a pukey 5 year old so it is slower going than I originally planned.
