"In the words of an anti-racist Cologne protester on Saturday: "It's not good to 'protect' us, it just makes the racism worse." ""

'Why the Brexit referendum will be swung by the horrific events in Cologne'

Article in telegraph relating brexit to cologne and women voting to leave

LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 17:42

polenta, that is a bloody good article.
This about sums me up:
Personally I am firmly left of the political center and share concerns about anti-refugee sentiment but and call me Mrs. Picky I draw the line at welcoming sex offenders into Blighty for toast and tea. except replace 'firmly left of the political centre' with 'slap in the political centre'.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 17:44

I've emailed Theresa May.

I've also emailed David Davies - not my MP, but he appears to be taking this seriously and the more voices that encourage him to do that, the better.

DespicableBee · 13/01/2016 17:44

David Davies MP has sent me another email saying we should start a petition

DespicableBee · 13/01/2016 17:46

The following is a link to the government website which enables members of the public to start petitions on any subject. If enough people sign then it forces a debate in Parliament. I would dearly like this issue raised but so far I have not found a way to do it. Would one of you be interested in starting a petition, tweeting it out to women’s (and men’s groups) putting it onto Facebook etc until we got enough names to force a debate?

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/check

The wording could be something fairly simple:

Eg: On New Years eve across Europe hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with culturally unacceptable attitudes. Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fear of sexual violence. We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights in light of what has taken place.

Or something else.

I fully understand if you don’t want to get further involved and whatever you do I will continue to raise this issue.

David

David Davies MP

emilybohemia · 13/01/2016 17:48

Where is your link to the facebook page again Vertigo where 'Claude' says refugees won't clear up rubbish?

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 17:48

Excellent, Despicable, can you start it?

I think it would get loads of signatures, particularly from women.

My local radio station did a phone-in on the subject today (I rang in, wanting to contribute, but they didn't return my call). More women than usual took part: and some were very angry-sounding. They'd sign the petition.

LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 17:53

Blow me, long thoughtful email from that David Davies, sent to several people (he needs to BCC next time). He says:

Do we go for a petition?

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 17:54

That's the second column Allison Pearson's written about Cologne: she needs to be added to the 'high profile figures' list.

Also:

Melanie Phillips
Janet Street Porter
Matthew Parris

LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 17:54

xpost with despicable

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 17:55

Look back Emily it's there.

ItsJustaUsername · 13/01/2016 17:55

I just got the same email despicable. Zero response from all the female MP's.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 17:56

Yes don't make the petition Tory though. Can we say in the petition that it wasn't just an attack on Women it was an attack on providing a safe place for refugees?

fourmummy · 13/01/2016 17:56

Although i've not been able to catch up yet with the whole thread(s), I've just seen Lumela's last message re David Davies suggesting a petition and am blown away by it (pathetically grateful for anyone who cares about this issue). A definite YES to starting a petition.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 17:58

I think we should name the Guardian minimiser and victim blamer reporters too, in the petition.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 17:58

And Jessica MacAllin in Daily Telegraph:

Too many Muslims are misogynists

SisterMoonshine · 13/01/2016 18:00

I read that about the CCtV too DespicableBee.
(and of course none of the women have their phones anymore).

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 18:04

Scratch the Guardian reporter being named, that will end in a witch hunt.

emilybohemia · 13/01/2016 18:07

I can't find any post like that Vertigo, but anyway, some refugees not helping pick up little doesn't mean much anyway. Obviously others will have been happy to help, so I have no idea what point you have to make.

Also, I fail to see what picking up littler has to do with sexual violence. You just seem to want to make slurs against refugees. I feel sorry for you.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 18:07

On New Years eve across Europe hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fear or experience sexual violence. We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights in light of what has taken place.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 18:08

David Davies has replied to me and said three other women had contacted him. He copied and pasted about the petition.

Come on, let's all email him so he can at least say 'X number of women have contacted me about this':

[email protected]

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 18:08

Look again Emily it's there.

polentapies · 13/01/2016 18:10

Cologne Attacks also have to do with Islam

glenthebattleostrich · 13/01/2016 18:12

Is it also worth complaining to the BBC re their coverage? They are publicly funded after all. Perhaps an email to the culture secretary too?
