No justanother, I wouldn't.

hiddenhome2 · 11/01/2016 22:52

People can't be forced to respect another country's law when they follow what they understand to be 'a higher law'. People are underestimating the power that an individual's religion can hold over them. Couple this with a culture that is entwined in that religion and you have something extremely powerful and potentially dangerous.

Olivepip59 · 11/01/2016 22:52

I'm pretty sure the 'No Smoking' in English means it's not Cologne. Nor do I remember spray graffiti like that when I was last there a few years ago.

Mind you, I was shocked by the graffiti in Italy this summer so, who knows.

Have forwarded to friends in Cologne.

I think wherever it is, that is a truly stomach-turning sight.

pink that would be a very positive outcome. Smile

polentapies · 11/01/2016 22:53

It's all over Twitter. It will be pulled apart there so will find out soon enough

Lilypotter · 11/01/2016 22:53

"anyone who is offered refuge and flouts the laws of this land does not deserve to be here. I think that should be made crystal clear."

Well that's all fine and peachy, but just how do you think that is that going to be enforced? It seems pretty clear to me that uncontrolled immigration in large numbers over a short space of time just cannot lead to proper assimilation of cultures. And European governments have NO IDEA who they've been letting in.

hefzi · 11/01/2016 22:54

I would honestly be surprised if there were signs on a German subway in English and Arabic without there being German as well: I know in, say, Southall, there are signs in English and (?)Punjabi (apologies - not up on Asian languages at all) but afaik all of those are only bilingual. But there are posters here from Cologne, so maybe one of them can confirm?

Hefzi, I really doubt Cameron is 'flooding' money into refugee camps. There's no profit in it for him and his mates. Do you have any figures for that?

LilyPotter · 11/01/2016 22:55

And hefzi there were a lot of posters who were harangued quite aggressively by ego for recommending caution at the time.
I acknowledge I might have missed any retraction in these long and complicated threads.

venusinscorpio · 11/01/2016 22:55

In which places do you think men have all the power?

Afghanistan. I'd love to see you deny that.

Trigger warning

The woman featured in the below piece is so incredibly brave.

It's def Arabic. One of the commenters says it's Egypt, could be the Tahir Sq. It's still barabic

LilyPotter · 11/01/2016 22:56

Emily I've read recently that the UK are sending more money than anyone else. No figures offhand at the moment.

LongWayRound · 11/01/2016 22:56

I looked up "woman dragged into subway by migrants" and found a couple of sites saying that the video was actually taken in Egypt. That seems more likely, given the English signage and Arabic graffiti.

Pinkchampchoccies · 11/01/2016 22:57

Poor women in Egypt Sad.

polentapies · 11/01/2016 22:59

Yes the sign to the right of the no smoking is Arabic, which makes sense that there is English signage, given the tourist industry.

venusinscorpio · 11/01/2016 23:01

That is not an excuse. It is not minimising.

Yes it is. It is apologist, and it's very offensive to me as a rape survivor, and I'm sure to others on this thread. You really are exceptionally obtuse or disingenuous, I can't make my mind up which.

Justanotherlurker · 11/01/2016 23:01

Wouldn't what?

Look at all common characteristics in the recent 'phenomen'?

emilybohemia · 11/01/2016 23:02

If you are referring to Islam, they generally respect the rules and laws of the country they are living in, like most people do.

I think their religion is powerful to many of them though. My friend met an Afghanistani refugee when he was handing out food in Lesbos. The refugee thanked my friend for everthing he had done and gave him his prayer beads. They were his only possession. My friend refused to take them, but the refugee insisted. Someone commented that this was his 'Namaste¨. This culture, coupled with this religion has the power to be potentially unifying, respectful and peaceful.

venus, I am very sorry that you have had experiences that nobody should ever have to have.

I do not agree that my comments were minimising or in anyway saying that sexual assaults were anything but abhorrent.

VertigoNun · 11/01/2016 23:09

Tory PR?

OP posts:
hefzi · 11/01/2016 23:12

THe UK has given approximately £1.2 billion DFID briefing from today
more than the rest of Europe combined (details here) and second only to the US.

venusinscorpio · 11/01/2016 23:13

If you say we should have compassion for violent rapists and sexual abusers and understand their motivations, yes that is apologist.

venusinscorpio · 11/01/2016 23:16

I'm asking you not to say it again as I personally find it very offensive. As I said, it's exactly what Gaby Hinsliff did and she, quite rightly, got slaughtered in the BTL comments.

Let's focus on the victims, not erase them, eh?
