The growth in our services and housing will never be able to keep pace with population growth like that - even if, economically, its good for the country to have lots of people coming here to do low-wage jobs.

while there are lots of low wage jobs, there are plenty of other ones too. It's not just the low wage coming in. the City is full of europeans.

I also don't think we can't build housing. we can. we have to demand it. I was astonished at how little lip service housing got from all parties at the last election. From my point of view it is in crisis mode.

juneau · 01/03/2016 16:08

We can build more housing, but no one is doing it fast enough. There is a huge backlog in home building already and being so far behind it will take years to house all the people currently needing it. Meanwhile, every three years our population is swelling by a further million so its hard to see how the building program could ever keep up with that.

damefaffalot · 01/03/2016 16:36

Haven't read all the thread, and of course immigration brings with it plenty of problems, but there seems to be a lot of unwarranted immigrant bashing going on. The NHS creaking at the seams because of hordes of immigrants for example, rarely a mention that a chronic lack of investment in the NHS, endless government cuts and a swelling population of (probably mainly) ageing British people with diabetes, obesity related illnesses, dementia, alcoholism etc are actually more to blame for the current problems in the NHS.

I think it's going to be hard to to see the wood for the trees on this and many other issues in the coming months.

BreakingDad77 · 01/03/2016 16:45

The problem is house building is a cartel sorry i mean free market Hmm at the moment, developers are managing demand and building in line with it. At the same time they are blackmailing local authorities into reducing the % of social housing that forms these new builds.

Reapwhatyousow · 01/03/2016 16:47

Leave. Forty years of experimentation, making up and funding jobs in Brussels that are not based on any productivity is enough already. Parasites. We will still trade with the rest of Europe and the world, they want us. We have always traded world wide. We will remain European but with an identity.

Definitely! Wish these wise words could be on enormous banners all around the country...

Lonelycher123 · 03/03/2016 06:19

Gamerchic
The reason you don't understand it very well is because they arent really explaining. You have to dig deep to find answers, but what I found is actually the EU workers have paid more tax than they've taken out. But the Non EU haven't. And big businesses will suffer. Can the UK really stand on its on 2 feet nowadays? It's all so scarey.

Lonelycher123 · 03/03/2016 06:23

I would say leave for other reasons, and not the because of immigrants coming in because actually they're not al coming here really, because they're better off in other parts of Europe not here! We aren't the only ones who offer free stuff! Look at Germany they have more immigrants and they're very good to asylum seekers.

Useful explanation of Norway / Swiz / Canada / WTO/ EFTA trading models post EU exit.

Norway only adopts 9% of all EU law

The only country to pay the EU tariffs is Belarus, every other country from Iceland to Turkey, pays no tariff at all to the EU - why should the EU then ick in the EU post-Brexit.

Good analysis of the options and it exposes the stupidity of Project Fear's 'we must pay high tariffs' nonsense.

chilipepper20 · 03/03/2016 12:27

Why is that labelled a car crash interview? Hancock fumbled on a few questions, but Andrew Neil repeatedly asked some stupid questions. For example, when he asked if the single market is such an advantage, why has trade between the EU and Canada, US and Australia increased much faster than trade between EU and Britain over the last 40 years? Hancock answered the question clearly and accurately, yet Neil repeated his question as if it was answered.

There are many questions like that.

Hancock didn't handle other questions as well (why is swiss trade with the EU so high?).

Leave. Reason? Sovereignty.

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 06/03/2016 09:31

This link, (if it works) takes you to tye output of the EU in terms of legislation... It is quite interesting to read what we are being subjected to each week , and the one before that.

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 06/03/2016 09:31

To my amazement I want to vote to leave the EU after spending my life as a strong supporter of the EU. I am from the first generation that went to school in the 80's and 90's who truly considered ourselves to be "European" in a way that my parents generation didn't yet. However, what the hell went wrong? I think the EU has evolved in a very unhealthy and undemocratic way to become a monster of it's own creation. I read a fascinating article in the Economist last year (sorry I can't locate it now, I've tried) that laid out how the EU has actually been very bad for the middle classes in every country, including Germany even. Partially due to the unrestricted flow of immigration, wages have stagnated across EU countries.

I am also appalled at the hypocrisy of welcoming Turkey into the EU in the not too distant future, given the terrible clampdown on democracy and ongoing human rights issues. Frankly, I also don't relish an additional 75 million people suddenly being granted the unconditional right to work and live anywhere in the EU. I have nothing against Turkish people but inevitably the UK will become an economic destination for a number of new EU citizens and the same wage income stagnation that we are already experiencing will only continue and and perhaps worsen.

Not a single argument from the "stay" side has swayed me either, the fear mongering just isn't ringing true to me. I'm not naive, I'm fully aware that some industries will suffer negative consequences but I ultimately think we will be better off as a nation and an economy who can trade with the whole world again. This referendum is a gift that we should utilize, the EU went in a very bad direction within a decade, imagine what it could look like in another decade?

hollyisalovelyname · 07/03/2016 18:28

I'd love if Ireland had a referendum too.
I'd vote to leave.
Our EU commissioner got the job as a reward for his loyalty to our prime minister despite the legacy of Irish Water he left behind - over 50 million euro spent on consultants to set it up.Angry.
Jobs for the boys.
We didn't fight for our independence to then hand it over to unelected Europen beaurecrats.
But that's what has happened.

longjumping · 07/03/2016 19:27

Leave, this country is full!
I want democracy back.

Doggeanie · 07/03/2016 20:06

Leave. Husband has heart failure because he waited too long for his operation. The complications he had after his op caused the heart failure and it can not be cured. The NHS is buckling under so much pressure.

SpringingIntoAction · 07/03/2016 20:36

I'm sorry to hear that Doggeanie. Sending you both my best wishes. I've also experienced the strain on our hospitals

AnnaForbes · 07/03/2016 22:18

Does anyone seriously want to stay in the EU given Turkey's imminent accession? More than 75 million people will be free to move around the EU and many of them will come here, then our NHS will finally collapse would anyone really vote for that?

Limer · 07/03/2016 23:05

Once the UK has left, others will follow. We're blazing the trail.

claig · 07/03/2016 23:27

Good post, Rainbunny. If you think the EU is bad now, imagine what it will be like in 10 years' time. Out.

MadameDePompom · 08/03/2016 12:04

Stay.
