Would you vote to stay or leave the EU?

Quick poll.

If we leave EU can close our boders and stop complying with European Human Rights

The European Convention on Human Rights is completely separate from the EU. Leaving the EU would have no effect on our obligations under the ECHR

OTheHugeManatee · 10/01/2016 12:50

Economically it can be argued either way. I don't think leaving would be as bad as the scaremongers make out and membership doesn't really deliver most of the benefits claimed (which originate from international regulation at a higher level than the EU and would happen anyway).

I would vote Leave because the democratic deficit is profoundly serious and insoluble unless we leave. If we can't vote our leaders out when they go against the public's wishes we don't live in a democracy. The EU is fundamentally anti-democratic. It's also a creaking 20th-century solution to problems that have evolved beyond its capacity to address. It is increasingly the creator of problems rather than a source of solutions (see the eurozone crisis).

There's no status quo to vote for as they are currently planning the next ratchet in integration. I think we have to leave before our national government is so toothless we can't any more.

Stay, unless we could vote to leave but have a decent free trade deal in place. I'm not mad about the EU but I don't want half the companies that are headquartered here to bugger off to Ireland either.

VertigoNun · 10/01/2016 12:56

Leave if we can take the ECHR with us.

Chippednailvarnish · 10/01/2016 12:57

On the fence.

I don't think the EU today is the EU Britain originally voted to join.

OTheHugeManatee · 10/01/2016 13:05

Chipped - The EU in 2020 won't be the EU we vote on in the referendum either. Google the Five Presidents' Report.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 10/01/2016 13:09

Leave.

Drinkstoomuchcoffee · 10/01/2016 13:24

Stay.
NYE's attacks not relevant as UK does not participate in the immigration aspects of Schengen.
Eu is an appalling bureaucracy, but so too are all other internarional organisations. Is the none Eu lobby also advocating withdrawal from UN, NATO etc?
If it had not been for the EU reaching out to the former Soviet satellites in Europe, we might well have seen the kind of conflict we saw in the Former Yugoslavia and now in Ukraine in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaris, Hungary, Romania ,the Baltics - with catastrophic consequences for UK.
We will need to continue to trade with the EU. At the moment we have a strong voice in shaping EU trade regulations. If we leave we just have to conform to whatever is decided.

Leave

SirChenjin · 10/01/2016 14:28

Stay - but as Nicolas Sturgeon has started her usual rant about calling another referendum if the vote doesn't go her way I'm seriously considering voting to come out.

If we do stay in we really need to renegotiate our position imo.

harridan50 · 10/01/2016 14:33

Leave

Leave all day long...The EU = Expansionist Germany/NATO and The USA this combo' has already started 2 wars - in Serbia and Ukraine. Germany's, (or Merkels) agenda to bring in hordes of young muslim men as Gastarbiters serves our interests? I don't think so.

I loved the original idea of Europe, the language and economic & cultural benefits. I used to be very much in favour of closer ties. But in voting for that, what have we got? The 2nd language of my DD's primary school isn't a European one, it's Arabic! Me my friends, my eldest DD and her friends won't go to our local swimming baths on a saturday because of Arab men that group together leering. Europe is in the process of being changed by Islamification. Areas of Marseilles, Arab & Magreb areas that is, are complete no go areas for the police. I've several friends that live there and they aren't FN, Le Pen voters., far from it.. It's only a matter of time before Bradford, areas of London etc, go the same way, if we are unable to manage our own immigration policy in a way that is in our national interest and not in Germany's...

Tardigrade001 · 10/01/2016 16:45

Stay

Friendlystories · 10/01/2016 16:47

Leave. The sooner the better.

0phelia · 10/01/2016 16:58

Leave,
Purely because the EU has morphed into a pro-capital monster and no longer represents the needs or wants of actual people, getting on with living their day-to-day lives.

squidzin · 10/01/2016 17:01

Leave.
Unless major reforms.
