Apparently it violated their air space and ignored repeated warnings.

Very scared how this will turn out. I can't see Russia not retaliating, then as Turkey is a member of Nato, we are bound to protect them. Scary times.

Sallyingforth · 24/11/2015 10:41

One of the US ones in the South China Sea for example

You mean the area of the Sea that China has unilaterally taken over to capture its oil reserves. That has always been international airspace.

AuntieStella · 24/11/2015 10:43

I've just watched a bit if SKY. They are reporting the Russians as saying the plane was downed over Syria (but not much reaction from them as yet, assumption that they are still formulating their position).

Also a reference to (unverified) footage emerging showing a clearly dead individual, assumed to be one pilot. Plus one captured alive.

ClashOfUsernames · 24/11/2015 10:47

It's all just going a bit wrong atm :(

I'm genuinely fearful. Should I be? I'm living in hope this will die down but am I being naive?

Fugghet I said this to dh and he also agreed. What is it about certain men that makes them crave so much power and use it in the worst possible way??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/11/2015 11:05

I am somewhat concerned, it feels like everything is rapidly destabilising. But I keep telling myself to keep trying to do what is right, hold my head up high and have courage. We all need to have courage.

Fugghetaboutit · 24/11/2015 11:10

Their balls, I think. I pity them tbh.

Fugghetaboutit · 24/11/2015 11:11

Also, without war there is no money so it's about power and wealth.

NoTechnologicalBreakdown · 24/11/2015 11:19

The Cuba missile crisis didn't become WW3, we can hope that this one will be solved too.

Fortunately it looks like the adults are starting to reappear in Britain to take Cameron's toys away. About bloody time too. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34908609
I always quite liked Paddy Ashdown. Make him go talk to Jeremy Corbyn.

SoDiana · 24/11/2015 11:20

Given putin's record, this will not pass without consequences.
Wish they could all just take their dicks out and see whose is biggest.
Settle them down for once and for all.

I believe it was Syrian piloted jet supplied by the Russians who have a long standing client state relationship with the Assad regime.

One of the main reasons this conflict occurred was because the US started backing rebel groups to unseat Assad. Syria is a crucial future pipeline route for oil and natural gas and Russian control of that route interferes with Western energy interests who wish to export energy via the pipelines across that region from Iraq rather than using tankers through the Straits of Hormuz within easy range of Iranian missile batteries. Meanwhile Russia wants to control energy pipelines out of the Caspian and Central Asian region that would otherwise compete with their own oil and gas exports.

This is complex proxy war between US and Russia who are each backing local regional powers to advance their own strategic agendas.

It is therefore no surprise that a US made F16 shot down a Russian made SU24. No doubt a tit for tat escalation will occur now.

Just in case anyone panics about Piglet's list, that's a list of interceptions going back to 2010. As someone in the 'Scotsman's' piece said, it is not an unusual incident.

We desperately need those adults to reappear everywhere, surely someone in the diplomatic service knows someone in Russia to talk to?

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 24/11/2015 11:51

backing rebel groups to unseat Assad

Or terrorists as we'd call them if they were trying to unseat one of our leaders!!

Given that the Russians have been supplying Assad with the kit to shoot down planes and America have been doing the same for their terrorists rebel groups, it's not surprising that things are kicking off.

It's the only way that the arms companies get to field test their new toys properly....

DrasticAction · 24/11/2015 12:12

It was bound to happen some time. They have been flying way too close for comfort

Our jets were scrambled last week? To intercept Putins planes, why do they keep flying into peoples air space?

I just wonder if he is planning something...

suzannecaravaggio · 24/11/2015 12:14

It the testosterone

coffeeisnectar · 24/11/2015 12:20

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Turkey going to or trying to be part of the EU?

claig · 24/11/2015 12:27

'Our jets were scrambled last week? To intercept Putins planes, why do they keep flying into peoples air space? '

I think that is usual type Cold War behaviour. It is being exaggerated in order to build up war drums. Sky programme specials on the interceptions etc. Acclimatises the public.
