Anti Semitism in the UK

This is in the news a lot at the moment.

I have never, to my knowledge, heard anyone make anti-Semitic remarks. Anti Islam, yes. Anti "them Polish people coming over here and taking our very badly paid jobs", yes. Anti Semitic, no. Am I just very lucky/ sheltered?

I would also like to add that having grown up in a Jewish community in the 1950's and 1960's both my parents were Jewish but when my father deserted my mother so did her remaining family and the rest of the community. She no longer fit the ideal of the community. I was left from the age of six as my mother's sole carer after she developed clinical depression, eating disorders, and diabetes. I grew up poor and uneducated in the Jewish community which meant I had no value or status.

I would say human nature needs to go back to basics because there is something fundamentally wrong which is not being addressed.

As usual, lots of talking around the issue with no one actually being brave enough to nail it.

The vast majority of anti-semitism in the UK (and large parts of Europe) is generated by...you guessed it...the religion of peace.

Islam hates Judaism. Myth A hates Myth B for stupid, ignorant, childish, medieval reasons.

Can't acknowledge that though because we've got to respect "faith", right?

I can't do that because I happen to be choosy about who I respect.

Not all Muslims are anti-semites. But most anti-semites in the UK are Muslims.

This is where "respecting religion" has gotten us. Religions which neither respect us, or each other, but are awfully quick to commit crimes when they don't get the respect they've decided they deserve.

*Note I used the words "majority" and "most" - not "all".

bitofanoddone · 29/01/2015 16:09

cafelatte I mentioned similar up thread. The first time I heard Arabs talking about Jews I was shocked to my core.

sourdrawers · 29/01/2015 16:29

RE: anti-Semitism/Islam.. Not saying these do not exist in this country. But on the continent, especially in France it's far worse .

CaffeLatteIceCream · 29/01/2015 16:33

It is far worse, sour, agreed, but it's worsening here.

Sorry, bit - didn't mean to be dismissive of your post.

Moniker1 · 29/01/2015 16:34

Blimey Moniker, I don't know where to start with that. Its like hearing something from the 1970's. If you live in a city, your son will be mixing with people who are Jewish or partly Jewish. Many/Most(?) Jews are entirely blended into the existing population. I assume you've heard of say, Alan Sugar, Nigella Lawson, Sir Robert Winton, Ed Milliband - they don't exactly 'keep their separateness', do they

Yes, I admit I have been unfair in my comments but I am so utterly fed up and depressed by the constant news items about Palestinians, Jewish settlements expanding never endingly onto Palestinian land, all the horrible beheadings etc by muslim extremists, female genital mutiliation, arranged marriages, and all the rest of this religion-caused strife in the world and particularly on my door step. I find it near impossible to empathise with anyone with strong religious ideologies. I am not religious, I don't want to become religious and I am sick of being told to be tolerant and welcoming to incomers.

I won't apologise for anything I've said here - just wish everyone would disappear so me and mine can lead our simple non extreme lives.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/01/2015 16:44

Well you've admitted you've been unfair but you won't apologise...Meh.

I'm a staunch atheist and, like you, can't understand religious people at all- whatever faith, I just don't get the mind-set. However, I hate racism and intolerance more.

I appreciate you want the problems to disappear - we all do - but yeah, it takes a certain kind of person to actually wish all those of a certain religion to disappear. I hope you're not one of them.

cardamomginger · 29/01/2015 17:16

Moniker - but your position that you wish I and others like me would disappear and that anti-Semitism is my fault for being 'too Jewish' or Jewish in the 'wrong way' is an extreme position.

There's less than 300,000 of us here. Less that 0.5% of the population. Does our existence really inconvenience you that much?

cardamomginger · 29/01/2015 17:19

PS Where am I and my family supposed to go?

sourdrawers · 29/01/2015 17:26

Clearly aggressive, intolerant secularism is something else we have to look out for.

Moniker1 · 29/01/2015 17:31

Does our existence really inconvenience you that much

No, as I said I don't know any Jews, stop trying to put words in my mouth to make you a martyr.
But here is a quote from the Independent......................
In the aftermath of Israel's victory in the 1967 Six Day War, which left it in control of Gaza and the West Bank (as well as the Golan Heights) successive governments gradually allowed, and eventually effectively managed, the creation of more and more civilian Israeli communities in occupied territory.

Several forces converged to encourage this growth: religious Zionists and others on the ideological right who believed in a greater Israel stretching from the Jordan to the Mediterranean and that the West Bank – or Judaea and Samaria, as they invariably call it – had been "liberated" by the Six Day War; elements in the military establishment who believed it would enhance Israeli security; and politicians who believed that it made sense to grab as much territory as possible for Jewish residents, to improve Israel's bargaining position in any future peace talks.

If the above wasn't happening much of the anti Semitism that occurs wouldn't!

Moniker1 · 29/01/2015 17:33

Anyway, I've said my piece.
I won't waste time discussing anything further.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/01/2015 17:46

Oh god- here we go again.

I guess for Jewish people the problem is that Israel is quite clearly the only country in the world with controversial policies.

It really stands out because, you know, All other countries in the world, eg china, Russia, uk, to say nothing of those in the Middle East are shining beacons of fair foreign policy, democracy and non aggressive perfect wonderful ness.

So yeah it makes sense to single out Jewish children at school or shoppers in a supermarket.

Oh no, wait...it makes sense for a racist to single them out.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/01/2015 17:48

Oh don't go moniker, I'd just love to hear your explanation for how the holocaust happened.

Moniker1 · 29/01/2015 17:57

you're mixing up issues.

Chinese are Christian, Buddhist, muslim, members or the Armenian orthodox church whatever.

Russians have various religions too.

Middle East is a law unto itself as it is vvv rich.

Israel is considered a 'western', educated, democratic?? country, hence expected to have reasonable values. Like other 'western' countries it is, hopefully, held to account for it's actions. eg chilcot enquiry into Iraq war here.

Anyway, rant away.

Moniker1 · 29/01/2015 17:58

Errr, I think you are confused.

Where have I negated the holocaust.
Anyway rant away.
I'm off.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/01/2015 17:59

I thought you'd finished?

bobthebuddha · 29/01/2015 18:04

If the above wasn't happening much of the anti Semitism that occurs wouldn't!

Says the person who 'doesn't know any Jewish people.' You know sweet FA about this.

Firstly, you say Jews are targeted because they don't assimilate. Then when you're called out on that absurdity, they're now apparently targeted because in your head British Jews are always one and the same as Israelis. Everyone lumped in as one big target for recrimination.

Get this; they're not. Do you think you and your family should be targeted for abuse and slaughter because of the Iraq war(s)? That's the logical extension of your argument. Happy with that?

And yes, please do explain how the Holocaust came about. What had those Jews done to deserve their fate that time round? Presumably you'll have something!

Coyoacan · 29/01/2015 18:19

Islam hates Judaism

Don't talk about things you don't know CaffeLatteIceCream

Jews and Muslims have lived side-by-side in peace throughout history, the problem started with the invasion of Palestine by the Zionists.

chibi · 29/01/2015 18:20

well if you only blended in better, you wouldn't be targeted- brilliant logic. it didn't save jews in germany, did it?

if isreal wasn't x y z there wouldn't be antisemitism- pogroms, antisemitism and violence against jews far predates the creation of the modern state of israel. assuming there is a direct correlation is a bit naive.

people are speaking about feeling threatened- about antisemitic things others have said. i am curious why some posters seem incredibly invested in minimising and dismissing their lived experiences

hmm.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/01/2015 18:21

Depressing innit.

CaffeLatteIceCream · 29/01/2015 18:28

Oh, is that right, Coyoacan?

Even when Mohammed was killing them in their thousands?

Mohammed hated Jewish people. If you don't know that you have an awful lot of reading to catch up on.

bobthebuddha · 29/01/2015 18:29

Jews and Muslims have lived side-by-side in peace throughout history, the problem started with the invasion of Palestine by the Zionists.

What absolute cobblers. There have massacres and forced conversion throughout history.

MrsSquirrel · 29/01/2015 18:39

There have been massacres and forced conversion throughout history. True, but there also have been times in history when Jews & Muslims did live together relatively harmoniously, such as the 'golden age' in Spain and certain periods in the Ottoman Empire. It's not an either/or question.
