My thoughts are with the victims of the latest barbaric act by Islamic extremists.

The world needs to wake up and defend itself.

RIP those who died and prayers for those critically injured.

The main culprits are almost exclusively angry young men, with no job and no prospects.

A couple of years in the army would channel that excess aggressiveness and anger, would reduce unemployment and would be serving the whole of society.

Rii-iight. So disaffected angry young men and should be press-ganged into the British Army and trained to kill for 2 years? To stop them becoming terrorists?

That could cause more problems than it solves, you realise?

Beware armchair generals and the demands that Something Should Be Done. Immediately. Rather than thought through carefully.

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 14:37

We can't bring back the death penalty btw as we signed away our rights to do so. So yes I can't help but roll my eyes when that line gets trotted out every time anything realistic fails as an option.

DoraGora · 09/01/2015 14:38

Or we could send a few more F17s to Iraq (and some to Syria) to drastically reduce the chances of any staying alive long enough to make it back to London.

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 14:38

Monstrous I thought exactly the same. Let's train them to get really good at killing people and give then access to weapons and comrades Hmm

liha · 09/01/2015 14:40

It's not an Algerian group per say , they ( 2 brothers) were born and bred in France and are from Algerian descent.
How do you suggest the 'world defends itself'?

JanineStHubbins · 09/01/2015 14:41

just FYI, as it appears to have passed unchallenged, the Madrid Bombings were not the work of Islamist terrorists, but ETA. I know that doesn't for the narrative about how all Europe's terrorist threats come from Islamists, but there you go. The second deadliest terrorist attack in Europe - the Breivik attack - was also non-Islamist, and also the work of white, Judeo-Christian Europeans.

Oh and for all those frothing about sealing the UK borders, there's the small matter of a UK land border with another EU country. Not sure how that is going to work.

JanineStHubbins · 09/01/2015 14:41

*fit the narrative

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 14:41

Actually I've just had a really great thought. A solution you might say {polishes badge}. My understanding is that Eastern Europe is pretty empty nowadays, Poland and Romania particularly. They are scrapping around for citizens, the streets are clear. Why don't we just leave Britain to the Jihadists and all move to Poland? I think there are some beautiful landscapes and unspoilt views.

Tsoukalosy · 09/01/2015 14:42

We can legally reinstate laws at will hence why it was only last year death penalty was debated in the commons. We can legally bring it back, and at times of deep threat we may need to take drastic action. I love you thoughts on "Realistic alternatives btw, good one! You get the party started then, what do you propose we can do about the current threat to our country.
Dora I think that would be a great idea, although everyone will complain that you may kill innocents, but they don't give a shit about the innocents in europe being killed by these people.

aermingers · 09/01/2015 14:42

Angela Merkel warned against moving to change the principle of freedom of movement in the EU when it was suggested. That doesn't mean it's off the table though. If the choice is between the. UK leaving the EU or abandoning freedom of movement the EU may well concede. Germany is afraid of the EU becoming more dominated by a socialist France. Also an economy the size of the UK operating just outside the EU but not governed by it may prove to be so attractive to business that the EU economy could be destabilised.

There is room for negotiation, we're in quite a strong position.

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 14:43

The IS fighters will come back and say Mummy I'm home

It's already happened

The mother shopped her ISIS returned son to the authorities who didn't even know he was back. (No border controls you see)

Then mummy if ISIS terrorist got upset because son got 9?? Years. She claimed it was excessive.

We had internment in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. In WW2 we used the Isle of Man In Ireland we also used internment during the Troubles. It's a reasonable response to contain a perceived possible threat within when hostilities have been declared.

But no formal war will ever be declared

You cannot round up millions of people based on the religious views

You are very constrained in what you can do by EU ECHR UN etc

The only the solution the Govt has is to tell us to stay calm, to deny it's anything yo do with I slam and to carry on kicking the can down the road in the hope that we dint notice that a certain % of our population is being slaughtered in the name of religion in our country each year.

You know, just like they did after July 7, Lee Rigby.....

liha · 09/01/2015 14:45

mrsgrinch

France looooves it's Police force, believe me they'll have more than enough...

msgrinch · 09/01/2015 14:46

Thanks Liha, yes from what I can see they have an awful lot of them everywhere

aermingers · 09/01/2015 14:48

Janine, there's never really been any credible evidence the ETA were responsible for the Madrid bombings. To state it unequivocally like that is ridiculous.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 09/01/2015 14:49

sebs

Are you OK? Is this thread annoying you?

SlaggyIsland · 09/01/2015 14:54

I like living in a liberal democracy. I will not let terror win by embracing some right-wing dystopia.
That's cowardly.

nancy75 · 09/01/2015 14:55

ETA denied responsibility for the Madrid bombings, something which is very unusual for them

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 14:55

I like your idea if mass migration to Eastern Europe. It's a bit close to Russia though and we'd have to establish some nuclear submarine maintenance facilities

Yes, terrorism comes from many groups. I'm old enough to remember the PLO, Red Brigade, ALF, Shining Path etc as
But it's wrong to equate what's happening daily with lone wolves such as Brevik

What we are facing from Islamic Terrorisms objective is a global caliphate. That means that THEY run the UK under Sharia Law and you convert to Islam or die.

And what our Govt has said is that they have no solution to this problem other than telling us that we really should start to get on a bit better with each other. Or as Cameron told us last year, Wee need to integrate more with Muslims

And when your leader spouts crap like that - it's Game Over

SlaggyIsland · 09/01/2015 14:57

Froth froth

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 14:59

SkaggyIsland

How about some constructive criticism?

Or are you happy with things just the way they are?

Jeering from the sidelines at other peoples concerns and proposed solutions is just a bit juvenile really.

Lillywhite10 · 09/01/2015 14:59

Just pray for hostages in Paris right now, irrespective of which God you pray to

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 15:00

sorry. Ipad made SlaggyIsland SkaggyIsland. My apologies

Tsoukalosy · 09/01/2015 15:01

I fear there will be little to no survivers this time. They are out to kill as many as possible.

SlaggyIsland · 09/01/2015 15:04

The actu all odds of you or I getting killed by terrorists are miniscule. You're far more likely to be killed by a motor vehicle.
These events are horrible but they shouldn't be a game changer.
My solution? Western countries stop destabilising large parts of the middle east for oil and stop propping up their client state over there.
Although they've already made quite a big mess.

Thereyouarepeter · 09/01/2015 15:05

Tsoukalosy

They have had plenty of chances to kill random members of the public and haven't.
