KareninsGirl · 07/01/2015 13:00

My thoughts are with the victims of the latest barbaric act by Islamic extremists.

The world needs to wake up and defend itself.

RIP those who died and prayers for those critically injured.

We know the people that pose a threat to national security why do we just sit and wait for them to kill innocent people before we do anything.

DoraGora · 09/01/2015 14:18

The long term solution is to get really good at catching angry young men with jihadi experience, who want to blow us up, before their bombs go off.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 09/01/2015 14:18

The UK still controls their border

Grin I wouldnt say our borders have any sort of controls.

Our borders are notoriously laughably policed! Every week a new story comes out about the crisis, people slipping in and so on...

DoraGora · 09/01/2015 14:20

why do we just sit and wait for them to kill innocent people before we do anything

We don't always wait. Think Guantanamo Bay.

But, if we always locked up people who've not yet done anything, because we suspected that they might, then we'd become Saudi Arabia.

GingerCuddleMonster · 09/01/2015 14:20

deportation won't work, imprisonment in solitary confinement might, I say we give that a go for 80years.

aermingers · 09/01/2015 14:21

There is a third option of staying in the EU but opting out of free movement.

msgrinch · 09/01/2015 14:22

This is probably a very naive and silly question however I'm going to ask it in hope someone knows.

Do Paris have enough police/resources to deal with the growing amount of attacks. Three going on at once must be stretching them.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 09/01/2015 14:22
  • imprisonment in solitary confinement might

yes but our prisons are already groaning - we would have to build many more prisons.

aermingers · 09/01/2015 14:23

Free movement beyond the controls we have in place. Go back to EU citizens requiring work and residence permits to live in the UK. Which would apply to British citizens in the EU equally. Those already here could be exempted.

Legionofboom · 09/01/2015 14:23

I don't know that deporting people or closing the border to them would be the instant deterrent that some hope for anyway.

The Dutch Government have threatened to revoke the right to Dutch citzenship of anyone known to leave the Netherlands in support of an organisation classified as a terrorist group. Some jihadists have threatened to attack the Netherlands if their passports are seized.

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 14:24

Lweji

But the UK has no Border control system in place. Successive Home Secretaries have promised us an effective computerised birder control system but have so far failed to develop any system. So, in theory we should be able to inspect and record passport data, we don't

I expect Therea May will be promising us the Border Control computer system again soon.

I do want us to leave the EU but that is a completely different issue.

I never expected deportion, forced repatriation and internment to be offered as solutions to this problem, on Mumsnet, on a Friday afternoonGrin.

Just shows the underlying effect that this terrorism is having on us.

Police say 15 dead in Paris in last 3 days

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 14:24

aermingers my understanding is that David Cameron tried to lobby for this option and was given a flea in his ear by Angela Merkel. Suggesting we were either in Europe and we adhere to it's core policy which is freedom of movement, or we leave.

DoraGora · 09/01/2015 14:25

The French also have an army. Men in uniform isn't the problem. The DGSG needs to get its act together, yesterday.

Tsoukalosy · 09/01/2015 14:25

uk.reuters.com/article/2014/10/17/uk-mideast-crisis-britain-idUKKCN0I612X20141017

I think this article is very interesting read from Reuters.

I personally believe we need to bring back the death penalty for crimes of terror.

Thereyouarepeter · 09/01/2015 14:28

False alarm @ trocadero. Expect lots of "other incidents".

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 14:29

Ha ha I was waiting for the call to bring the Death Penalty back *rubs knees in excitement.

So what we seem to be wanting is a dictatorial regime where religion is outlawed, foreigners are not welcome or are deported based on their beliefs, even better killed for then! borders are closed. Sounds brilliant. I think these regimes already exist btw, we might be fighting a war against them.

Lweji · 09/01/2015 14:31

I here Antarctica is nice this time of year

Yes, but it's crawling with scientists.

GingerCuddleMonster · 09/01/2015 14:31

elf we have many disused army bases now, that have closed perhaps a war prison would work, some old school POW camps...this is obviously not a option.

or review our current inmates, does a single mum on benefits caught doing a Saturday job in a market too boost her earnings really need to be in prison??

I don't know what we can do, but they really do need to devise some sort of solution.

Nancy66 · 09/01/2015 14:31

the death penalty for a bunch of brain washed lunatics who dream of being martyrs for the 'cause' would not be a good idea.

DoraGora · 09/01/2015 14:32

Sounds brilliant. I think these regimes already exist btw, we might be fighting a war against them.

The IS fighters could come back, then, and say, look, Mum! I'm home!!

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 14:32

Aermingers

The free movement of people is a central tenet of the European Union and Cameron has already been told by Merkel that it's non-negoiable.

So while we remain in the EU we cannot stop the free movement of people. So those Paris killers and their mates, being French citizens, could quite easily move to London, Berlin Glasgow, Oslo etc and we couldn't stop them.

well technically we could stop them if we knew they planned to come here but the Home Secretary would have to ban them and if you don't have a computerised border control system to tell you they've arrived at a port / airport then you wouldn't even know they were in the UK in the first place

Which takes me back to the fact we need to re-establish effective border controls as a matter of urgency.

GingerCuddleMonster · 09/01/2015 14:34

it's just heartbreaking to think DS will live in a worl like this Sad.

Tsoukalosy · 09/01/2015 14:34

Haha are you deliberately misinterpreting my words Sebsmummy? Did I say lets go and kill innocent foreigners for being different or having different beliefs? No I said anyone convicted of crimes of Terror, which legally can be killed in action in police fire, so why should we keep them alive in cushy prison cells getting food and water and shelter and the freedom to their twisted beliefs? No they should not.

Everyone harps on about overcrowding and well killing the many terrorists would be a start. They serve no purpose in life other than evil and atrocities, or are you one of these people who believe that you can rehabilitate them?

Tsoukalosy · 09/01/2015 14:34

Or we could send them to chernobyl :)

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 14:35

WetAugust the terrorists are home-grown and already live here. The only useful policy we could implement is not allowing those leaving to train abroad as Jihadists to retain their citizenship.
