Revolting Paper........Daily Mail

I am going to break the habit of a lifetime here as I despise anyone copying the comments of other posters. I think that it is really annoying, as if the person can't make up their own comments or something. However a recent post had me intrigued. Here goes.

'thats the daily mail for you.
revolting paper.'

Just out of curiousity, I would like to know why the Mail is so revolting.

Where is the evidence that the Guardian supports the War? Examples, please.

Heathcliffscathy · 15/04/2004 16:38

Oldiemum see this and this these are from the comment section of observer online, as the guardian online doesn't have an archive of it's leader column, but these are typical i think

Heathcliffscathy · 15/04/2004 16:39

i don't put the guardian in same category as dm by any means, and i still buy it sometimes, but i'm increasingly dismayed by it's stance...

scampadoodle · 15/04/2004 16:42

Oh, the Guardian is so anti-jewish & anti catholic. It printed something in its media diary ages ago where if they'd written 'black' instead of 'catholic' they'd never have got away with it. Something to do with the (then) editor of the Telegraph being RC & also a couple of his deputies. Er, so what?! (I speak, by the way, as a lapsed catholic, married to a secular jew, who feels the palestinians got a raw deal)

& Private Eye is SO public-school boy mysogynistic... Dh gets it though, so I read it on the loo.

Agree with all that's been said anti the DM. My mother reads it & comes out with so much cr*p I want to weep.

OldieMum · 15/04/2004 16:51

I hadn't picked up on the anti-catholicism. I'm a bit surprised, as dh is a (lapsed) Catholic from Oz and is shocked by the general level of casual anti-catholicism in Britain. I would have expected him to spot this. On its being anti-Jewish. Well, its correspondents certainly look at the Palestinian point of view, but Linda Grant has been running a column on Jewish views in Israel for some time now.

OldieMum · 15/04/2004 16:55

Sophable, the Observer is a separate newspaper, with a different editor. I am also increasingly dismayed by it. One of the two articles is by Blair, by the way, not by one of its journalists. You could argue that papers ought to give the PM a chance to put his argument (even if you and I disagree with him).

scampadoodle · 15/04/2004 17:06

Oldiemum: just as the DM is always printing articles by black commentators on how 'Immigration has gone too far', the Guardian also has the odd "Look how balanced we are" piece. Don't get me wrong, I'm much more of a guardian reader than a DM one, but it's smugness makes me scream. (& why do they think Zoe Williams is a good writer??!)

OldieMum · 15/04/2004 17:13

I agree about Zoe Williams! But Polly Toynbee and Nick Davies write regularly for them and Linda Grant has been writing for them for years. I just don't think there is a Guardian 'line'.

Heathcliffscathy · 15/04/2004 18:01

i'm talking about editorial 'comment' bit what do you call it, the leader...you know, left hand side, this is the attitude of the newspaper bit. tbh, i only really buy guardian on saturday (and observer on sunday) but dh and i have been really riled by this bit, which i would have thought is the official stance of the paper...correct me if i'm wrong (i mean it!)

OldieMum · 15/04/2004 22:47

The articles you posted are from the Observer, sophable. Has the Guardian published leaders in favour of the war? I haven't seen any. I'm quite willing to to believe I'm wrong, but I'm just puzzled.

Heathcliffscathy · 15/04/2004 22:56

Actually, i'm probably wrong oldiemum...i tend to lump guardian and observer together and like i said only buy at weekends, so bit crap judging grauniad on basis of once a week...i think they were pro in the lead up to war but since then haven't been...you are very loyal to guardian...you don't write for it do you?

OldieMum · 16/04/2004 14:20

No, I don't write for it - just have a soft spot for it.

donnie · 16/04/2004 14:44

scampadoodle, agreed that Zoe Williams is just awful, but I do not agree that the Guardian is anti-Jewish, more anti Israeli which is not the same thing at all. I also agree the paper is pretty anti Catholic and also anti CofE(I am C of E myself). It's so damn trendy nowadays to slag off religion. Simon Hattenstone is another rubbish freelance whose pieces often appear in the Gruaniad, and how many years did Burchill work there????????having said that I bought the Torygraph in waitrose this morning - dunno why though! BTW your comment that the Palestinians have had a 'raw deal' is a bit of an understatement don't you think?

scampadoodle · 16/04/2004 15:21

Ach! not going to get into that one, donnie! No offence.

Codswallop · 16/04/2004 15:30

Mother in law reads it

Janh · 16/04/2004 15:50

I like Zoe Williams.

marthamoo · 16/04/2004 16:02

I have been reading The Mail at my PILs house all week and thus know more about David Beckham's alleged sex life than I care to (it's all Victoria's fault for being too skinny and not going to Madrid with him) It is such a rag, eptitomising all that is bad about stereotypical Middle England attitudes (asylum seekers bad, single or working mothers bad, let's blame the parents, crime wave shlock lazy journalism etc etc). It's insidious too, not blatant like the tabloids. Horrid paper.

My parents get The Mail on Sunday though and I always make a beeline for the You magazine when we go round

Gumdrop · 16/04/2004 16:29

JanH - are you Zoe Williams?

stripey · 16/04/2004 21:19

Don't get much time to read the paper myself but when I do I usually get the Telegraph - I like it - mainly get it on Saturday and the recycle half of it unread the following week. Often buy The Evening Standard (London) because it is quicker to read.

Janh · 16/04/2004 21:21

Gumdrop, noooo - don't understand why no-one else likes her!

ZolaPola · 17/04/2004 09:42

Ever tried the World Service as a source of news instead? It's refreshingly international and no mention of the Beckhams (though must confess I read the Standard/rehashed Metro articles from it to get my updates). Also read Guardian Weekly when I lived overseas - has articles from Le Monde etc and no Zoe Williams as far as I know - though I do find her quite entertaining anyway, just envious, as a frustrated writer myself, that she gets paid to write such lightweight observations. Surprised to see no views on the Murdoch press so far! Sometimes get the Times on Sat to see the latest Burchill rant and to have a rest from the noble Guardian.

Davros · 17/04/2004 19:54

Listen to the World Service every night unless my hubby changes it to Radio5 while I'm dozing! R5 OK in the wee small hours but once its "daytime" they have that awful, 10 in a studio cackling at each other's jokes type format.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/04/2004 18:43

oldiemum, i owe you (and the guardian) an apology. there was an article about falujah (sp?) in saturday's guardian by ronan something (in the comment section no less) that was the best most awful (in a powerful way) thing i've read in ages, i can't think of the last time i was so moved and angered by a piece: it was brilliant. hats off the guardian for publishing it. did you read it?

motherinferior · 18/04/2004 18:50

I like Zoe Williams too. AND I'm not her either. Although have occasionally written for the Society bit.

wiltshire · 18/04/2004 22:30

Does anyone on MN actually like the DM because it does IMO report on the real world in the UK. Not the rosy tinted picture that some liberal people seem to have. I believe that the DM highlights things that this Govt. would have us believe are not true. I don't believe it's a tory paper either. I have never read anything in it that particularly supports Michael Howard or the Conservatives.

The only thing I do find depressing about the DM is that it reminds me every day to keep saving to move to another country as this country is 'going to hell in a handcart!'
