Conservative Carswell defects to UKIP

Isitmebut · 28/08/2014 13:46

Modernizer Carwell won the new Clacton seat in 2010 with a large majority, heavily influenced by Ukip deciding not to stand a candidate themselves – so he has found a natural home with those that have a totally anti EU stance, but seems to forget that Ukip without a parliamentary majority cannot change British law to bring us out.

Claig …… after all your rants about right wing ‘modernizers’, you now own another one – so time for you to ‘jump’ the other way? lol

P.S. His defection was hardly cold, but by 1.30pm Wikipedia had been changed to reflect his defection. Who do you think was in a hurry to reflect his move, Ukip or the Conservatives? lol

Yes, we need to get rid of FPTP, so that the electorate's vote is made to count

In the 2011 referendum, 67.9% of voters rejected any changes to the voting system so the matter is pretty done and dusted. FPTP is here for at least a generation.

claig · 02/09/2014 20:27

'UKIP got 355,989 more votes than Labour'

Yes but look at the difference in Labour's resources, access to the media and on the ground political network. Labour have been dominant in Wales since time began but UKIP, smeared by all the media, still nearly beat Labour. That is indicative of the public mood and public opinion.

rf241 · 02/09/2014 20:27

Happen to be a UKIP councillor but support same sex marriage? On your bike!

Elderly? You shlukd be euthanised when you become a burden

Muslim? You must Having sex with camels

claig · 02/09/2014 20:31

BreakWindandFire, I don't think it is over for FPTP.

The Tories didn't want it. The media didn't push it, they didn't educate the public about it and make it an important issue and so much of the public didn't follow it or know about it or understand the issues.

But it will return because as Natalie Bennett of the Green Party said "our political system is broken". How can a party come top in the EU elections and not have any MPs? It is not reflective of public opinion.

The Tories don't want change, but change is coming, just like it is in Claction, because people are waking up and saying that they have had enough.

claig · 02/09/2014 20:32

'Rhetoric. Not an argument.'

Fact, not an argument.

claig · 02/09/2014 20:36

Are those quotes reflective of what Diane James, Louise Bours, Jane Collins, Farage, Nuttall think or are they just made by insignifcant council applicants etc. Are they policy or just spouting by peope who have no say in policy?

And as for Godfrey Bloom, he stood down.

dawndonnaagain · 02/09/2014 20:38

No, claig it really isn't fact. It's rhetoric.
Confused

claig · 02/09/2014 20:39

'Elderly? You shlukd be euthanised when you become a burden'

And yet it is pensioners in Clacton who will be voting UKIP, so those comments are nothing to do with party policy, just as the Labour candidate in Scotland who called pensioners "coffin dodgers" was not representative of Labour policy to the elderly.

rf241 · 02/09/2014 20:40

Yes Claig but I think that most decent parties have a red line around fascism/racism/bigotry. Of course you don't agree with everything but surely there are some red lines??

The article is not a hatchet job really, is it? It's simply quoting UKIP elected officials. What Exactky about that is a hatchet job?

rf241 · 02/09/2014 20:42

Claig I find it interesting that you refer to the statements made by UKIP 'gripes'and 'smears'. Gripes? Well yes, it is a gripe of mine that these guys mentioned are a bunch of fascists and racists and imbeciles. Smears? Not quite.

claig · 02/09/2014 20:43

'Yes Claig but I think that most decent parties have a red line around fascism/racism/bigotry'

But UKIP is not fascist and farage refused to ally with the French National Front because he thought that Le Pen's father was anti-semitic, even though Le Pen herself is not.

UKIP are not racist, they have black and Asian candidates and have an Asian MEP who was elected by UKIP voters in the recent Euro election.

rf241 · 02/09/2014 20:44

'Insignificant council applicants' no Claig these are by and large elected officials.

claig · 02/09/2014 20:44

The Tories are now in a group that contains the True Finns.

rf241 · 02/09/2014 20:45

Which labour candidate?

BreakWindandFire · 02/09/2014 20:45

The Tories didn't want it. The media didn't push it, they didn't educate the public about it and make it an important issue and so much of the public didn't follow it or know about it or understand the issues.

Sorry Claig, I can't agree with that analysis and I'm someone who voted for a change to AV in 2011! Yes, the Tories didn't want it, but the Lib Dems did, and Labour did (mostly), so it was a high profile issue and there was a big media debate.

In the end the turnout was far higher than expected, the vote being held on local and devolved election day to boost turnout. The result very clear. Over two thirds of voters wanted to retain FPTP.

claig · 02/09/2014 20:45

''Insignificant council applicants' no Claig these are by and large elected officials.'

Can you name them and have they been removed or sacked after their statements came out?

claig · 02/09/2014 20:48

'Which labour candidate?'

Stuart MacLennan

"A Labour candidate became the first casualty of the election campaign today after he was sacked for posting a string of foul-mouthed rants on the internet.

Stuart MacLennan, who was standing for the Moray constituency in Scotland, had called elderly voters 'bloody coffin dodgers' and complained about 'chavs' on Twitter."

dawndonnaagain · 02/09/2014 20:49

Louise Bours, now there's a delight, we don't believe in rehabilitation, hang 'em and flog 'em.

Jane Collins supports Godfrey's slut remark.

Nuttall is still sounding off about hairdryers and hoovers.

rf241 · 02/09/2014 20:51

Ah Yes, he was sacked. It is a shame that being a bigot doesn't get you sacked from UKIP.

dawndonnaagain · 02/09/2014 20:52

UKIP are not racist, they have black and Asian candidates and have an Asian MEP who was elected by UKIP voters in the recent Euro election.

Tokenism. Just Tokenism.
It does frighten me how easily people are taken in. It really does.

dawndonnaagain · 02/09/2014 20:53

"I would like to congratulate the coalition government for bringing a whiff of privatisation into the beleaguered National Health Service"
"I would argue that the very existence of the NHS stifles competition"
"the NHS ... is not fit for purpose in the 21st Century"
Paul Nuttall

claig · 02/09/2014 20:53

BreakWindandFire , the LibDems are always marginalised and you have to wonder whether some of them are really serious or not. Even in their midnight negotiations when the Coalition was formed, they did not hold out for a better PR system, but accepted a not too good option.

It will return, but this time it will be serious, because it will be championed by UKIP and the Greens.

Also if Scotland goes independent, even the PPEs in Labour may have to really back PR or they may never win in England again, particularly now that there is a real people's party that is taking their votes and that almost beat them in Wales in the EU elections.

When the panic sets in in Labour, the PPEs may have to change their position

"Is Labour panicking over Ukip? Fears growing that Nigel Farage's party could eat into the white working class vote, admits Peter Hain"
