I wrote a post on the other thread about the switching off of the ACARS. I read that when turned off it sends a message to say that it has been switched off. This is how they would know the timing.

tiaramasu · 18/03/2014 11:58

Dinosaurs. I agree.
Even if the pilot knew that his wife and kids were on the verge of leaving, when they actually did is going to be a emotional jolt.

And did I read right somewhere that the wrong co- ordinates were put into the system before takeoff?

DowntonTrout · 18/03/2014 11:59

clifftop what doesn't fit with that theory is the waypoints passed IGARI, VAMPi, GIVAL, IGREX which requires navigating. After the first westward turn, the plane did not fly in a direct straight line past those waypoints towards Langkawi.

However, I've not heard much mention of that over the last few days. Can anyone explain or link to a map of the waypoints?

jamtoast12 · 18/03/2014 12:04

In yesterday's news conference someone asked if the family had moved out the day before and the reply was a confused no....in fact they had a slight laugh about it as if he has no idea where that came form.

jamtoast12 · 18/03/2014 12:05

The specifically replied that no one has moved out,

Stepawayfromthezebras · 18/03/2014 12:05

Delurking to say I've really enjoyed reading Goldies posts on the thread.

And the pilot who posted the theory on the plane catching fire and the pilot heading to Langkawi airport has posted an update to his thoughts in the comments scroll down to the post approx 11.55 today

ClifftopCafe · 18/03/2014 12:06

Downton please read the account up thread as I'd be interested on your take.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 12:08

I thought the olifield NZ guy's evidence had been discounted?

yggdrasil · 18/03/2014 12:13

I don't buy the "his wife left him so he flew around for seven hours then crashed the plane" theory at all.

However, one small thing. Absolute silence, I think, from his relatives. In contrast to the co-pilot, I believe, whose relatives have, I believe, commented.

I can't think why they wouldn't be speaking, really. It is noticeable, their silence, given that he has four close family relatives plus a grandchild.

OTOH, fair enough, they might just not want to speak to the press. Totally fair enough, they are as bereaved as anyone else.

KaleCrochet · 18/03/2014 12:14

@Clifftop, I don't buy that theory. Yes, the plane does make the short part of the zigzag towards the airport at Langkawi, but why does it the turn at about 90 deg leftwards in the direction of the open sea of the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal and is exactly along an official navigational flight path. Either the pilot would have attempted to land at Langkawi, or he would have crashed short in the surrounding sea. The military radar clearly shows the plane taking that flightpath 90 deg to the left, northwest-wards, after that short kink in the zigzag near Langkawi.

DowntonTrout · 18/03/2014 12:16

clifftop do you mean the Goodfellow account?

Yes, I read it. It sounds very feasible. However there are problems with it, as with the many other feasible theories there have been.

As I said, it does not explain the navigations after the first turning westward, over the waypoints. This has been asked on his page and has not been answered, I don't think. The other issue is the fire. Could it be so catastrophic and produce enough smoke to kill everyone, but not destroy the plane sufficiently to allow it to continue flying for another seven hours?

I don't pretend to know the answers, by the way. I'm just speculating like everyone else. As far as I can see there are no theories without holes in them according to the information that has been released, but even that keeps changing.

DowntonTrout · 18/03/2014 12:18

Kale you were quicker and more succinct at posting than me!

Dinosaursareextinct · 18/03/2014 12:20

I can actually imagine a distraught pilot having a row with the co-pilot due to totally opposed political views in the hours after the trumped up conviction of the opposition leader. Co-pilot is killed or seriously injured. Pilot can't face landing the plane and facing justice / ruin of his reputation and of course never being able to fly again / loss of his (already somewhat estranged) family. But also can't face plunging the plane into the sea with loss of all passengers. So either continues to sit in cabin in a distraught state until plane runs out of fuel and crashes, or puts plane on auto-pilot and kills himself.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 12:20

Just had a look at Courtney Love's theory. The woman is still deranged imo.

On the pilot's family, it might be they aren't allowed to talk?

BTW the DM is now claiming that Anwar Ibrahim has said him and the pilot were related. It's a long-range link, through an in-law. But their theory is up there with Courtney Love ie nuts.

GarlicMarchHare · 18/03/2014 12:20

I think the smoke inhalation theory says they were heading to Langkawi but passed out before attempting to land. Can't see why the plane would have executed a further turn then, though, unless he'd pre-set it Confused

Cyber-hack hypothesis for those who can't be bothered to read 12 hours back up this thread! Re-post:

Plane hacking app launched at conference.

FAA says it wouldn't work in RL.

The bug needs to get into the aircraft's data system. It could be pre-loaded, maybe in something low-security like an advertisement or the seatbelt signs, then controlled using the app. The operator's device would need radio contact with the plane's systems, so s/he must either be on the plane or have an incredibly sophisticated interface with ground-to-air communications (and if they can get that, they're already in pole position so little need for Android hacking apps.) As both the inventor and the FAA pointed out, human pilots could override any programmed actions taken by the plane. So at some point, the pilots have to be de-commissioned without the cabin crew knowing.

JonathanGirl · 18/03/2014 12:21

Could the plane have had other routes "stored" in its autopilot, so the plane ended up being switched to a different route through some kind of mechanical fault (perhaps caused by a fire)/or by a confused euphoric- hypoxic pilot pressing random buttons? People can do very odd things when starved of oxygen, can't they?

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 12:27

No, can't buy the suicide theory or the oxygen lack of theory still. It's too pre-planned and organised.

Tried to find out a bit more on the family and I suspect they wouldn't talk to the press or were told not to. It's the same for both the pilot and co-pilot, not much at all.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 12:29

Think too coordinates are put in before takeoff.

KaleCrochet · 18/03/2014 12:29

Also, the plane went from IGARI to VAMPI. Langkawi airport is about halfway between these two waypoints... it is the island on the west coast right by the border with Thailand. If the pilot was attempting to get to Langkawi, he wouldn't have overshot and gone as far as VAMPI. If he was able enough to aviate and navigate to get the plane near Langkawi, he would have to be putting in a mayday to the airport so they could prepare for an emergency landing. Also, I think Langkawi wouldn't be an international airport capable of landing big heavy planes like 777's. He would either have turned straight back to KL or onwards to HCMC in Vietnam.

RabbitRabbit78 · 18/03/2014 12:29

Also delurking to say how interesting and informative this thread is, mostly because of Goldie's knowledge and willingness to answer questions.

LatinForTelly · 18/03/2014 12:31

Lordy, Dinosaurs, can you really imagine that? Sounds like an episode of Dallas or Dynasty to me.

ClifftopCafe · 18/03/2014 12:31

Read the Goodfellow account Kale as it answers some of those questions.

DowntonTrout · 18/03/2014 12:32

Yes Living there was a report that at least some of the coordinates were programmed in before it left the ground.

But like lots of the information we don't know how true it is or things get said and are retracted or never mentioned again.

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2014 12:32

Kale, what are the waypoints? Is this the way the plane flew and how do we know it? Are these locations of pings? (Assume not as they would not have a precise point).

Can someone summarise the mess up on timings of ACARS and transponder being turned off/ disconnecting? What was it originally and what is it now? How does this relate to the timing of the last 'Good night' contact?

Question for Goldie (please do come back!), do you think it is possible for Malaysian Airlines to have got timings wrong initially? Is it very complex to work out? It seems very odd to me...
