There's already a definite reduction in the airtime being given to this story on the national news. Just timed the ITN broadcast and it was 3 mins 20 secs.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 17/03/2014 22:51

Re phones/find my iphone etc - promise i'm not asking why no one rang out!

Even if you assume everyone has a phone and it was taken from them, what about ipads/ipods/tablets/laptops, any of which could also have mobile internet connection? So (i'd guess) the plane either cant be anywhere that has any signal, or whoever did it purposely blocked the signal (as opposed to taking the phones)

HauntedNoddyCar · 17/03/2014 22:52

Hypoxia - I assume that the effect of this would be similar to bleeding out and I can tell you that it isn't particularly distressing at all. Cannot vouch for the actual dying bit though but I'm told it's ok.

Re: cyber jacking. I have no aviation knowledge but I assume from other skills that if you can make radio communication with the plane and have knowledge of the systems involved and some top hacking skills then it could be possible assuming the plane has full electronic equipment. If some of the kit needs to be manually operated then no.

I am making an educated guess though.

'It's why that tory MP was found dead a few years ago'

20 years ago in fact...

[Feeling old emoticon]

AchyFox · 17/03/2014 22:53

It may well be a freaky coincidence but I'd still be looking where he honeymooned.Sad

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/03/2014 22:54

Again, they have to be in range of a cellphone tower and again those devices would be off or in flight mode by default.

AlpacaYourThings · 17/03/2014 22:57

trixy me too, as long as it wasn't too long or painful for the passengers & crew.

98percent it might also explain why there isn't a big bit of Denis to be found, a fire would cause an explosion, which would mean the plane isn't intact?

Could the Malaysian Government have it wrong and it wasn't a criminal activity?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 17/03/2014 22:59

I've flown and forgotten to turn off/flight mode one item of many, I dont think its rare. I know they need to be close to towers, my point was that if there was no jammer, any bit of the search that was close to a cell-tower could probably be discounted?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/03/2014 23:03

I think the areas ruled out because of radar coverage are bigger than those ruled out because of cellphone coverage. Also it would be wrong to rule them out because it maybe that all were destroyed or were in flight mode etc.

BornFreeButinChains · 17/03/2014 23:17

Can some one tell my why Goldie is kindly and able to answer questions is she a piolt

lessonsintightropes · 17/03/2014 23:20

Born she's answered this a few times in the thread. She has a degree in aeronautical engineering and works in a junior management role for an aircraft manufacturer.

trixymalixy · 17/03/2014 23:21

Goldie is an aeronautical engineer.

BornFreeButinChains · 17/03/2014 23:24

Thanks Blush am reading backwards in, I cant read all three threads, i can see though lots of rep is going on.
Thanks...

trixymalixy · 17/03/2014 23:28

Goldie, one of my favourite MN moments was when someone tried to patronise me saying "It's not rocket science". My response "well believe it or not I pretty much have a degree in rocket science" and then ripped their argument to shreds. I keep waiting for someone to say that to me in real life!!

I have an aero eng degree but sadly work in finance rather than the aero industry.

trufflehunterthebadger · 17/03/2014 23:29

Whatever the result of this mystery, I imagine that flight crew will no longer be able to manually disengage radar contact in future.

BoiledPiss · 17/03/2014 23:30

Anyone had a look at this tomnod website, the online search?

Is it legit?

Ive been searching!

lessonsintightropes · 17/03/2014 23:32

Tomnod site totally legitimate, but focusing on what is now we think the wrong area afaik.

Sorry Born that wasn't a dig. But I wouldn't ask about mobile phones if I were you Grin

BoiledPiss · 17/03/2014 23:35

Ahh ok thankyou, it's kind of obsessive! Shock

Although staring at square after square of black ripples is pretty tedious!

lessonsintightropes · 17/03/2014 23:37

Boiled a mate of mine in Hawaii is currently on annual leave and has spent literally 12 hours a day on it for the last few days Grin as have quite a few of her mates. A very interesting FB discussion!

BoiledPiss · 17/03/2014 23:39

'What do you see?'

'Black ripples, what do you see?'

'Black ripples, anything else?'

'Nope'

Etc...

OutragedFromLeeds · 17/03/2014 23:45

Bit of a random one, but does anyone know what would happen to the cargo if it has landed/crashed on land?

Say if it is carrying gold or something else valuable and it's landed in a Stan county. Is it finders keepers? What will happen if they keep it? Would they try and keep it?

NumanoidNancy · 17/03/2014 23:46

Someone (male) elsewhere was refusing to believe Goldie was anything more technical than an air hostess, based solely on her gender. I imagine its something those of you in engineering come across a lot TrixyMalixy?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/03/2014 23:47

Really, NN?

What a bellend.

lessonsintightropes · 17/03/2014 23:49

Outraged I think we covered this pretty extensively in #1 or #2 - the consensus (well, Goldie's superior knowledge [sile]) was that the cargo would be crushed/ungettableattable if it landed on anything other than a mile long reinforced runway.

NumanoidNancy · 17/03/2014 23:50

Have you seen the stuff from the Tomnod website that Courtney Love posted on twitter this morning?!
