Am I the only one distressed by the thought of drinking our DS formula milk at airport ?

Now I know the reasons for it and understand them but ugh ugh ugh.

DH and I are returning back on Thursday and he has tried a swig, I had a tiny dot and its not pleasant. Can't DS just drink the stuff that would show that its not something dangerous ?

the terrorists were going to use a baby as a decoy so i doubt you could give it to your ds.

It is absolutely foul, seriously. If I have to do this in a few weeks when we travel to Ireland I am probably going to be sick and this will make the security people think it's an explosive!

Have we yet found out what happens if you take it in powder form with a bottle of water? Would much prefer drinking a bit of water and having a dab of powder formula.

the thing i don't get is that once you've made up a feed and tasted it at customs, you then need to use it within the hour! what about long haul flights? surely you'd have to take water and powder separately? is this allowed?

How old is baby? Could they not have full fat cow's just this once? Otherwise agree that you will have to get over it.

AFAIK a member of the traveling party has to drink it, that could be your ds
I'm also astounded if its that gross why your baby drinks it...

I must admit the thought of drinking EBM made me turn green and was glad were just going to cornwall for our holidays!

oooh - she's right wiht the taste thing - formula milk tastes awful I've had a drop before now and it's gagging - nearly as bad as my breastmilk was!

Am i missing something with this. If a terrorist has a liquid form of something...and they are going to board the plane to blow it up they arent going to be concerned about sipping a bit before boarding are they?
Because they are just going to blow themselves up.

I saw that they were showing cartons at one point. I was saying to dp, if they allow cartons, surely they could be contaminated!

yes if the stuff tastes vile/is poisinous - as they'd be more likely to be spotted before the plane takes off (becoming ill for example) before then.

i guess that the customs people would be able to tell from their physical reaction to tasting a poisonous substance, that it was something dodgy!

charliecat I had that same thought as there are few things that would make someone drop dead immediatly so presumable would go unnoticed until after they board the flight?

not nessecarily - haven't flown for ages (but am on Thursday) but from what I can recall the time from checking in and going through security - to actually boarding the plane can be quite lengthy - long enough to fall ill

think one of the liquids was an acid (to make the explosion) so it would have hurt if you'd taken a sip and it would have been obvious I imagine!

tribpot - we too were wondering wether we could bring the powder separately as that is how we carry it around normally but then realised that if dh tipped unknown powder into unknown liquid then prime candidate for either arrest or much worse.

Yes I know its not the worst thing in the world and perhaps I titled the thread wrong. I do realise that I just need to get over it (actually DH has volunteered to do the deed) and I just wondered if anyone else felt the same way.

Apparently you can't take the cartons either in case they have false bottoms

i have no probs with tasting infant formula even if they taste rubbish. if your baby can drink that stuff then so can you. i have no probs with sampling ebm either. i taste mine all the time to see if it is still fresh as the nursery has its lapses with my stored ebm from time to time. and sometimes it is 'wwaay off'. what i would worry about is contaminating the formula in the process of sampling it for customs.

Why are you giving your child this if you think it is so vile? You should try HiPP organic formula. It is sweet and very creamy. I think this is a slight over reaction. Security are trying to keep everyone save and you are freaking out about tasting something you routinely feed to your child.

Isn't it funny how there are such diverse reactions to this? I personally had no problem tasting EBM, and will occasionally taste formula. Not too sure about tasting it in powdered form though - maybe it tastes like dry Angel Delight or something (flash 20-odd years (and the rest!) to childhood!!). Might have to give it a go at next feed time!

I agree with Noonar. I think I posted this on another thread too, but I am confused about how you are supposed to keep the milk fresh if you are going on a long haul flight. I saw an article recently saying that new advice is that all formula milk should be made up just before it is about to be used, even if it is going to be stored in a fridge. I can see how they might not want you fiddling around with white powder on the flight, but still confused.

Look I will drink the stuff and yes I do understand in the grand scheme of things its a no brainer. However I'm not sure how giving our baby something that we personally don't like the taste of is such a wrong act - baby rice is apparently vile as well. We used the formula they topped him up with in the hospital and he has never had a bad reaction to it and seems to enjoy the stuff.

Luckily we are on a short flight so even if its delayed then milk should be ok, but like others I am confused about what to do if it was transatlantic as I think it ceases being sterile once its been drunk out of and also that the milk shouldn't be kept for too long, although I have known people who keep their made up milk by their bedsides for overnight feeds with no ill effects (Not me I hasten to add, 2 hours is about our limit)so I think that the milk keeps for a lot longer than the guidelines suggest.

ask for a plstic cup and pour a bit in there to taste
