Am I the only one distressed by the thought of drinking our DS formula milk at airport ?

Now I know the reasons for it and understand them but ugh ugh ugh.

DH and I are returning back on Thursday and he has tried a swig, I had a tiny dot and its not pleasant. Can't DS just drink the stuff that would show that its not something dangerous ?

Another thing, and this is just a hypothetical what if here, but if on a long distance flight a baby got gastroenteritis (sure this is spelt wrong) due to milk not being stored properly or dehydrated due to not getting enough water then the parents would have a potential legal case ?

And yes I would like to say that one baby being sick is nothing compared to our national security, and I am generally in favour of tighter security controls.

If you drink and explosive chemical you will be sick, violently, obviously sick. I doesn;t matter how much you think your aim is justified, or that god will grant you a place in heaven...if you injest and expolsive you will puke. people are just made that way.

this a ghastly situation, but there it is.

i bottle fed mine. take cartons for formula....they are quite safe and easy to use and will avoir gi problems

hairymclary, most poisons taste really bad, don't forget our sense of taste evolved for that sort of thing.
Most explosives aren't nice either.

To me this brings the image of the various sort of religious loony that does this being trained in the art of keeping a straight face when nasty stuff.

hairymclary · 16/08/2006 21:29

ok then so you would just pretend to drink it, as I said. Or have a false bottom in the bottle.

Making people drink babies milk is NOT an adequate safety measure

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 21:39

TooTicky, you say 'you find it odd that people give it to their babies when they don't like the idea of it themselves'

Do you mean you only feed your children things that you like?

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 21:41

hairymclary - what do you feel IS an adequate safety measure as regards baby milk?

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 21:42

Sorry those questions sounded a bit nasty - genuine questions and curious for everyone's answers to them really.

I myself can't think of anything else they could do - but perhaps there is?

TooTicky · 16/08/2006 21:45

goldendelicious, I've already answered this a little further down the page

I so wish I could understand the mindset of these people. The virgins waiting in paradise just doesn't strike me as enough of a reward! No, but seriously... what can justify killing so many innocent people? Babies as decoys?! I just don't get it. Does anyone on MN? Not to justify, I only want to even begin to understand...

TooTicky · 16/08/2006 21:49

No probs!

hairymclary · 16/08/2006 21:50

I think that if they're that worried about it then they should either let people take powder and provide them with enough water, or keep a supply of cartons of formula on the plane.

Blandmum · 16/08/2006 21:51

there was the case of the bomber who canned his pregnant gf to carry a bomb on board (she didn't know you understand). this was in the late 80s IIRC. These people are abhorant

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 21:56

Cartons of formula on the plane is a good idea. Obviously bf mums are already sorted! Not sure about water tho how do we know how long its been stood and how its been kept? I may be going a bit OTT with that but i'm fanatic about things being sterile etc.

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 21:58

sansouci - i don't think people like us on MN will ever begin to understand x

well it'd be boiled water surely? or you could request a bottle of mineral water maybe? Not sure if they are carrying that though atm

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 22:09

aviatrix, it is - if they aren't doing these checks, someone could very easily go and do it! So, in theory, I think it is the choice.

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 22:12

It'd have to be boiled but they can't do that on the plane. Think the airlines would decide its too much like hard work! The cartons would work though as no preparation required - like it!

Rookiemum · 16/08/2006 22:23

Don't mean to be picky & annoying as its a good idea in theory, but there are quite a number of brands about, I can't see the airlines carrying all of them and I have no idea if DS would take another type.

Plus we have only tried our DS once on the cartons and he was sick, apparently some babies get this because of the different water or something.

I agree with goldendelicous as well about the airlines sterilizing the water - i wouldn't trust them at all. I'd be much happier having a dot of the powder and sampling the water.

I haven't read entire thread so sorry if this is repeated but has anyone said why we can't take water and powder and try each respectively? Cos if made up milk is kept at room temperature it'll go off and you get one poorly baby?

Blandmum · 16/08/2006 22:32

there is no reason why you can't take the power and watr separatly.....you don't have to give formular to babies at a worm temperature. Mine almost always had their milk at room temp. It is quite safe to take the water, boiled and sterile and mix it with the powder when you need it.

goldendelicious · 16/08/2006 22:37

yes i'm aware of that - what i meant was if you have to make it up before you board and are on a long-haul or you don't need it for a few hours it has to be kept in the fridge else germs breed.

I'm flying to greece in a couple of weeks and bearing in mind flight is four hours plus waiting times i wondered whether taking water and powder was ok as I didn't want to risk giving DS milk thats not been kept cold for a while.

MrsMoomin · 16/08/2006 22:58

I think the tasting thing is a PR gimmick so the authorities look really tough and in control of the situation - after all, unless they do a full body cavity search they can't eliminate the possibility of someone taking an explosive liquid on a flight. The amount of milk you take on a short-haul flight is tiny - a few fluid oz, you could easily conceal that much liquid about your, er, person. Hem hem. Plus, they are allowing duty free through. Are they making people taste that too?

EmilyTurner · 17/08/2006 07:37

I thought the same thing. I would be carted away if I tasted it. I would deffo pull a face as it is so sweet. YUK. I found feel the same about tasting my own milk too. Also sweet.

I wrote something about it on my blog
