It's going to last six months.

At least Andy turned up with a poppy on. Nice touch. Bit early though.

limited, they closed the NotW in an attempt to head off further investigation, surely? Not just because of the Millie Dowler thing

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:08

he is saying that NotW was closed because the Guardian said Mulcaire deleted Millie's voicemails

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:10

simplistic (& wrong!)

in other wolfie news, no more page 3 are a waste of space

TensionSquealsGhoulsHeels · 04/11/2013 16:12

Ah the semantics argument. Mulcaire hacked into Millie's phone but because the messages can't be proven to have been deleted by mulcaire (they might have just self destructed after being listened to by mulcaire, as listened to messages tend to do) the big fat lie of messages being deleted is to blame for the downfall of a national newspaper. Hmm I can see why he'd be upset over that.

ParsingFancy · 04/11/2013 16:17

Should I add,
"It's all The Guardian's fault. Whatever 'it' is"
to my list of possible defences?

limitedperiodonly · 04/11/2013 16:18

Wallis appears to be saying there's no evidence of deliberate deletion - perhaps not, but it's a bit convenient - and it's all a bit of slyness from the Guardian.

Oh, and the police should call round after 10am to give people a chance to wash and brush up.

Yes, theone, I think so. I suppose the news about Millie Dowler is what finally made people take notice.

Most people didn't care when it was about slebs, but spying on a dead teenager, that was really bad...

I do think spying on a dead girl is bad, but I think it's hypocritical to get upset to learn you read stuff about her gleaned from subterfuge, but be quite happy to read stuff gleaned on slebs in the same way, just because it suits you.

Onesleeptillwembley · 04/11/2013 16:18

Ah. So therefore, poor, innocent NOTW ET al are all victims of vodaphone or whoever. Poor things, if they'd just explained that clearly in the first place we could have recompensed these innocent victims, not vilified them an put them in court. ConfusedTwats!

Onesleeptillwembley · 04/11/2013 16:20

Actually, could these scum sink any lower?

limitedperiodonly · 04/11/2013 16:20

Is he? I missed that. I don't understand his point. Is he saying the closure and job losses are all that meddling Guardian's fault like at the end of Scooby Doo?

Only naice suspects though. Your common or garden suspects, perps and crims can carry on being roused ay ungodly hours of the morning.

Reminds me of all the Assange supporters who complained about the conditions of his remand in Belmarsh. Not something they ever cared about until it happened to their little hero.

limitedperiodonly · 04/11/2013 16:21

Scum rises to the top onesleep. Which is presumably why they thought they were untouchable

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:22

Coulson's defence (from opening statement) seems to be that journalism is a cut-throat business & it doesn't do to ask too many questions about sources. even if you are the editor. Hmm

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:23

yes, limited - exactly that. that meddling @nickdavies - it's all his fault

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:24

sorry, @Bynickdavies

ParsingFancy · 04/11/2013 16:28

But... but... that nice Mr Alton

Isn't anyone going to blame us any more?

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:29

\link{https://twitter.com/neilwallis1/status/397397489873354752\this was it, limited}

'Wonder if @guardian & Nick Davies will at last properly apologise for their lie that killed a newspaper and cost 200 jobs? Nah, me neither..'

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:30

oh, thanks for that, Parsing! had forgotten Mr Alton's mouth-frothing.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:31

(Murdoch journos clearly v good at frothing)

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 04/11/2013 16:32

now, where's my organic shortbread?

EldritchCleavage · 04/11/2013 16:32

Alton is appalling sexist . Not surprised he blames the wimmin.

limitedperiodonly · 04/11/2013 16:32

That's hilarious.

I wonder what other colossus I can bring to its knees.

World financial system? Oh, er, hang on...

limitedperiodonly · 04/11/2013 17:07

Coulson's barrister has said that his phone was hacked by Mulcaire too but the prosecution didn't mention it because they didn't want to admit he was a victim too.

Grin

It strikes me as entirely sensible of a man like Mulcaire to hack Coulson's phone and anybody else at NI just for insurance.

"Is he saying the closure and job losses are all that meddling Guardian's fault like at the end of Scooby Doo?"

I've been astonished by the number of otherwise sane people who have bought the line about the Guardian getting it "wrong" over Milly Dowler. So the Guardian said the NOTW deleted the voicemails, and it turns out they may not have done. But the Guardian got everything else right - are people saying that the actual hacking element is so trivial that it doesn't matter?

Had completely forgotten about Alton blaming Mumsnet. That was fun.

ElizabethJonesMartin · 04/11/2013 17:51

I think today was good for the defendants. I think the evidence which came out about the removal of a computer from the flat found by cleaners in the garage is less incriminating than the press had previously led us to believe. It could be interesting.
