my best friend works in a primary school as a SN assistant. its a normal school with a few SN students in the class. one of these kids has avoidant personality and a whole host of similar related problems due to feotal alcohol syndrom. if this child does something wrong she is punished exactly like every other student there, her disorders do not prevent her from knowing right from wrong or knowing she should not hurt others. she is a paticularily vicious child but she is still aware of what she says and does, she is not unaware of her actions, or excempt from the repurcussions

Well said Harpsi.

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 13/04/2006 09:52

what kind of parents are they
that they put such a fear into their daughter to do this is beyond me

they sound draconian imo

harpsichordcarrier · 13/04/2006 09:52

what good would it do to lock her up?
would it make her less likely to kill another baby? of course not
would it make it less likely that other people would kill their babies? of course not.

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 13/04/2006 09:52

should lock the effin parents up imo
obviously child abuse somewhere sown the line
for the girl to be petrified

i don't think there's really enough evidence for us to say that the parents must have been abusive; surely the girl's mental health problems may have made her irrationally terrified of her parents?

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 13/04/2006 09:56

a poor dead baby is enough evidence imo

for a young woman to be absolutely petrified to do this to her child

they are draconian

exactly. a child who develops OCD or a drug habit does so as a result of a combination of their personality (nature and nurture) and their environment (who they meet, situations they're in) and instead of condemning either the parents or this young woman, shouldn't we support them all getting some help?

marthamoo · 13/04/2006 09:58

Anyone who think she walked away from this smiling and has got off scot free is wrong. It doesn't sound like her life was easy before - I would guess it has been destroyed by this. You can't apply logic to someone with mental illness - and say, well I was only x age when I had my baby and I coped. She was ill - the fact that she hid the baby's body in her wardrobe for a month speaks volumes. Does that sound like someone who had planned from the outset to murder her baby or does it sound like someone who was completely unhinged and in denial that the birth had even happened?

Do you remember that woman who brough her baby's body back from the States in a suitcase? She was older, iirc - but she was mentally ill too. Age has nothing to do with it, really.

It's tragic, and I too would love to know where the professional support for her was when she was told she couldn't have a termination. It's appalling that people can slip through the net so often in this day and age.

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 13/04/2006 10:01

hope the parents havent got anymore kids

This story is reminiscent of the old days
where pg out of wedlock was a scandal

Harridan · 13/04/2006 10:05

God people who say "she should have given the baby up for adoption" like that's a simple, pat solution make me scream.

Don't you people ever read anything? Don't you ever watch films, the TV? Haven't you heard of the heart-wrenching stories of adoptions ruining the lives of mothers who regretted giving their babies up and spending the rest of their lives wondering where and how they were, and of children growing up feeling rejected and angry because of being adopted?

I know that lots of adoptions are successful as well, but this stupidly simplistic attitude of "just give the baby up for adoption - problem solved" is so incredibly ignorant. Adoption doesn't always solve a problme - it merely creates several different problems.

PinkTulips · 13/04/2006 10:07

well if the alternative was to kill the baby it certainly would have been a better option!

expatinscotland · 13/04/2006 10:10

she kept her dead baby in a wardrobe for a month! ffs, peeps, she was NOT thinking rationally enough to reason 'well, should i give this child up for adoption b/c most people think it's the best thing?'

someone who does this is very, very disturbed.

PinkTulips · 13/04/2006 10:14

im not denying that. but what exactly is the differance between any other very disturbed person who kills a child and her? the only one at the moment is that any one else would have been lócked up, either in a mental health facility or prison depending on their mental state at the time of sentancing.

bundle · 13/04/2006 10:14

there is no way this woman was thinking rationally. do you honestly think she would have sat down and pondered: ummm adoption or killing the baby? ffs she panicked and did something terrible.

great post Marthamoo

You can't judge this girl's reactions by what you would have done in her place. She was clearly in such a bad place. She probably panicked. I bet she wishes she had her baby now Sad
