I always think of 'staircase wit' comments to say to people when they criticise me for having 5 (+ ?) children - there are a couple of nice quips in here!
Average number of children in uk families 1.3 !!

Bullshit, GB. And you can navigate London like a star.

expatinscotland · 11/04/2006 14:29

How can she say money isn't an issue? Puh-leeze.

She looks a fright, too.

Gingerbear · 11/04/2006 14:29

marslady is the expert, not only does she have 5, but two of these are 'The Twins' (horror flick style music)

Everything needs accompanying music today.

Rach69 · 11/04/2006 14:30

The best thing about having a tribe of kids is watching them interact together, they exasperate me and crack me up - but they are a unit in themselves and whatever happens they will always have each other [sentimental icon].

Flamesparrow · 11/04/2006 14:31

To those with large families.... Are your houses noisy? I am a quiet person, and just DD seems bloody loud half the time - with 4 or 5 others to squabble with and talk over, does it get very loud?

(Not being rude, I only know 2 big families, so thought I'd get a cross section Grin)

ggglimpopo · 11/04/2006 14:32

Like any other household - sometimes chaotic, sometimes quiet....

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 11/04/2006 14:33

flamesparrow people comment how quiet the house is considering how many kids are here tbh

it is even quieter with 2 left homeSad

Gingerbear · 11/04/2006 14:33

snort, no good navigating - I managed to get from KingsX to Marsy's neck of the woods by luck, and then had to find her at the tube station by mobile and spot her luminous pink coat.
It was a good weekend. I am going to gatecrash the Londinium Clique again this summer.

ggglimpopo · 11/04/2006 14:34

How many children have you,dsw (apols if have missed it)

Rach69 · 11/04/2006 14:35

Having one child is quite an investment. Having two means you have to double up on a fair bit of stuff. But once you have three or four... the oldest has moved on a bit, they are more independent and also more helpful (they want the pocket money so they can go out with their friends). Families are not just for childhood, they are forever. I never think I wish I had had those tuckerboots when I was 14 but I'm glad I had my big sister instead to plait my hair and big brother to introduce me to his mates!

Rach69 · 11/04/2006 14:37

Sometimes quiet (if absorbed in something or eating...) sometimes noisy (if practising gym or eating...)

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 11/04/2006 14:37

6 ggg
only have 4 at home nowSad

Rach69 · 11/04/2006 14:38

Never feel guilty about saying sometimes 'leave me alone for 20 minutes exactly and then come back...)

jac34 · 11/04/2006 14:39

DH and I have twin boys(7yo)and he has a DD(11yo),who stays on weekends.I enjoy the sound of children in the house.I'd really love another child and have been trying to convince DH since the boys were 6months old,but he's dead against it.I'm an only child and he is one of 6.

cataloguequeen · 11/04/2006 14:41

my great great grandmother had 18 children!!! now that's officially too much!!Grin

ggglimpopo · 11/04/2006 14:42

Bloody hell CQ!

expatinscotland · 11/04/2006 14:47

My great grandmother had 18 as well. 15 of them survived to maturity.

My grandfather was the eldest. He never wanted any kids. My gran had to work on him for years. They had two.

leogaela · 11/04/2006 14:50

Cod, she doesnt' look that bad! You should see my mum sometimes! We were all ALWAYS really embarassed by my mum cos she looked so bad. She still looks young and could look fantastic now if she took some care, but.....well, she's my mum!

I think big families are great, wonderful and have loads of admiration for people that do it but only if there is enough time and energy to go round. My mum was selfish in her decision because my dad was more interested in nursing his hangover everymorning than getting up and having breakfast with us. Money was never an issue, we just didn't have any :)!

DesparateScouse - the ohter children love coming to your place because its fun, they can let off steam, be loud and just be children and be accepted as part of everything going on. That was what I loved about my family, we always had an open door. I found going to friends houses was a bit stiffling and too tidy, too planned, but the peace and quite was nice :). I even used to stay at one friend where I slept in my own room Shock.

Cristina7 · 11/04/2006 14:51

My dad is one of 12 siblings that survived into adulthood. Eleven of the 12 brothers and sisters have 1 or 2 each. One has 3 (the youngest are twins). My grandparents were atheists (and communists).

leogaela · 11/04/2006 14:52

And we didn't have a dog! Yuuuuuuuuuuek!

NotAnOtter · 11/04/2006 14:59

our receptionist at work used to say things like 'chops come in packs of 5' I am vegetarian !!
Mine are quite spaced out so its maybe easier for me.... I think six is a good number - a nice round eight in the family!

hellywobs · 11/04/2006 15:03

I have a friend who is one of 7 and her dh is one of 12 - they only have one child now. But conversely I am an only child, have just one son and am not intending to have any more children (though dh is youngest of 4, not catholic)

LadyTophamHatt · 11/04/2006 15:22

I don't care if she looks rough because it's like she's been reading my mind.
I always said to DH about the sharing of rooms, tight budget shopping, hand me downs etc etc when DS3 was just a figment of my imagination.

OMG...I sooooo want another babySad

poppadum · 11/04/2006 15:27

I think she is entitled to look like dog shit if she wants to, but this is the smuggest thing I have read in a long time.

NotAnOtter · 11/04/2006 15:28

ladytophamhat...imagine feeling like that when you already have 5! Blush
