RIP Savita Halappanavar :(

OP posts:
Narked · 15/11/2012 11:46

A competely unviable foetus, inevitable miscarriage and a woman in extreme pain who develops fever and eventually collapses. Over 3 days. In a hospital. In 2012. All the while begging for medical intervention.

KRITIQ · 15/11/2012 11:47

Narked, I think THAT is an important point. It occurs to me that the legal "fudge" in Ireland means that folks may be a bit complacent about it. So long as a blind eye is turned to the thousands of women who "get the boat" to England for terminations, they can convince themselves that well, there is an option there of sorts.

Sure, there are those who are adamantly anti-abortion in practically all circumstances. But, as you say, there is a "silent majority" who hopefully have been aroused from their slumber because of this case, who will think harder on it and realise that the current fudge isn't enough, that concrete changes need to be made to make abortion more accessible in Ireland. That's the people taking to the streets, going on the marches, signing the petitions, lobbying the politicians. Maybe this can be the critical mass that will achieve much needed change.

EasilyBored · 15/11/2012 11:48

Think you need to go look up the pagan origins of marriage Extro.

I had a civil marriage, your god was no where near my social contructs thankyouverymuch.

Narked · 15/11/2012 11:48

I hope so.

squoosh · 15/11/2012 11:49

Extro, 'Christian' was in inverted commas as marriage existed long before Christianity was ever invented.

squoosh · 15/11/2012 11:51

This thread isn't about home schooling, please don't try to derail it into encompassing your pet subjects.

Extrospektiv · 15/11/2012 11:52

Yes, it was. But marriage is part of Christianity because God intended it to be.

Perhaps a very limited pro-abortion law will be passed in Ireland now, which will placate the centre and the government will warn the sex-poz third-wave crew they aren't getting their way at the same time. It would be an injustice for the unborn babies killed but it would possibly save thousands of unborn babies compared to a situation where an intransigent government blocked abortion completely until the public mood swung so much that people were ready to go in for the "on-demand" anti-lifers' dream.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/11/2012 11:52

Extro - in your opinion, in your opinion.

Stating opinions as facts doesn't win arguments. And bringing all sorts of your other pet issues into this thread is perhaps not very respectful to the debate the rest of us are trying to have about a tragedy which led to a woman's unecessary death. It would be nice if you could try to stay vaguely on-topic.

squoosh · 15/11/2012 11:53

I fail to see how non Christians should be bound by Christian morality.

Extrospektiv · 15/11/2012 11:53

I was asked to justify what I called people extremist left wingers for, and seeker responded over homeschooling. I was giving her the respect of an answer to her point.

Extrospektiv · 15/11/2012 11:55

I will stick completely to abortion in future as long as I am not asked specific questions on anything else.

One last thing, in response again to seeker, I oppose the death penalty.

KRITIQ · 15/11/2012 11:55

Extrospektiv, do you think I really give a flying fig what you think of Christians who don't share your viewpoint, or any of the other folks who seem to be on your personal $hit list? Seriously!

Narked and sqoosh - I wasn't talking about anti-Irish comments just on mumsnet, but in other parts of t'internet. However, I've seen a few throw away comments about the Irish being "backward" and similar. Just wanted to flag up that things like this, and the general slating of Christians doesn't add anything useful to the argument, imho.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/11/2012 11:56

'anti-lifer' is so much more respectful than 'anti-choice' Hmm

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 15/11/2012 11:57

Extro : ^God is real, He is everyone's God whether they honour Him or not, and He will judge all including those who disbelieve in him.^

I will repeat since this appears to have been lost on you the first time.
Your god is not my god.
Whether I have a god or not is my choice. And mine alone.
If you believe I will be judged, that's your problem.
Since I haven't told you what or who to believe in, I think it's fair that you leave my beliefs to me, as they concern no one other than myself.

This is irrelevant to the discussion on Savita. Yes, the woman who died.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 15/11/2012 11:59

A competely unviable foetus, inevitable miscarriage and a woman in extreme pain who develops fever and eventually collapses. Over 3 days. In a hospital. In 2012. All the while begging for medical intervention.

Yes, lets not let Extro's ramblings derail the thread.

A woman lost her life - dying a tragic and agonising death in the very place that should have treated her, should have made her health a priority. But they didn't.

CalmingMiranda · 15/11/2012 12:00

Extro - please, how does the list work?

Do you go to SPUC meetings with your notebook and pencil and read out new additions? "I would like us to be aware, brothers and sisters, of a person called SolidGoldYesBrokeMySpaceBar who has very extreme views. Another, Seeker, I am downgrading out of the top 10 this week as a mere liberal". And do they all then minute this and write it on their own notebooks so that they can be vigilant for someone answering to the name SolidGoldYesBrokeMySpaceBar as they go about their daily business, conducting surveillance operations, harrassing those involved in homosexual sin even if it isn't a sin in their terms or the law, and interfering with the democratic secular support for the arts in America?

CalmingMiranda · 15/11/2012 12:02

Sorry, point taken re de-railing - Extro, no need to answer my question below Smile

KRITIQ · 15/11/2012 12:03

Well, I tend to say, "anti-abortion," because that "does what it says on the tin."

seeker · 15/11/2012 12:05

"Yep- I d live in that universe!

You already do, Seeker."

I know I do- not sure where that random "d" came from!

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 15/11/2012 12:07

I think that postcard idea below is a fantastic one.
Out of interest which are the pro choice groups in the UK that had lobbied against reductions in the number of months?
Just so one knows who to support.

CrikeyOHare · 15/11/2012 12:09

Seeker

Oh!!!!!!!!! Amazing that difference a random "d" makes to the context Grin Grin

OnTheRoad · 15/11/2012 12:09

Extro -- I've been a long-term lurker and watching you in this thread has actually made me post! The anti-religion bile spouted on this site is constant, and I'm so impressed you have the strength to fight for all of "Christians" (yes, loved that use of scare quotes!). Sending you love and PRAYERS, Extro. If there was a prayer emoticon, I'd send it.
And, for what it's worth, I'm a Catholic left-wing feminist.

squoosh · 15/11/2012 12:11

Enough of the thread derailing, 'tis tedious.

EasilyBored · 15/11/2012 12:11

Catholic left-wing feminist. You are either not a very good Catholic, not a very good feminist, or not a very good left-winger.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 15/11/2012 12:12

Oh dear. The woodwork is being overrun.
Can we focus on Savita please?
