Last thread full.

Steve has released a statement responding to Lord McAlpines statement.

OP posts:

Yes, saying McA has thrown toys out of his pram when he is innocent and only recently were allegations so widespread he had no alternative but to issue his statement, is very unfair on McA. Imagine if one of us were wrongly accused?
He hates all this as much as anyone posting on the thread.

Most posters on line on websites and on twitter try to be careful not to defame people. We all know there is potential liability. It is not a chat in a pub. It is a permanent record. It is also a wonderful tool for getting information out though. You can disclose scandals without defaming people and the internet has been a huge force for good. One fifth of the people on the planet today have a new leader in China. China may well find it is forced to improve its human rights record because of the difficulties it has despite reportedly having 1 million people engaged to track the internet, to control what is posted.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/11/2012 10:16

I agree with Jins too. Lord McAlpine has denied it, SM has said it wasn't Lord McA and yet people are still insinuating that he has done something wrong. There is no evidence that he is guilty of anything so why is the whispering campaign continuing apart from the fact he is wealthy and as somebody called him before "a Tory Scumbag".

Social media and mistaken identity can ruin someone's life so we should all be careful: see this for a really shocking example of where social media went horribly wrong (the wrong women was identified as the student shot in a demonstration in Iran in 2009)

Sorry but I literally have two minutes to glance at this thread and have to zip off again but I just don't believe LM will be suing the average joe bloggs on Twitter. I think it's just scaremongering via his croanies. The BBC, will probably be a different story.
Many people have also asked why David Ike has remained left alone and I still haven't heard an answer to that.

Xenia · 15/11/2012 10:37

It is possible they may have some scheme that if an apology is not forthcoming they will want £500 or something of that order. They will have to prove that what was said was libellous first.

johnhemming · 15/11/2012 11:10

It may be that the Lizards will sue David Icke.

Jux · 15/11/2012 11:23

Another arrest news.sky.com/story/1011805/savile-cops-arrest-man-for-sex-offences

fatfloosie · 15/11/2012 11:52

Would that be DLT then? Hope that's not libel!

Abra1d · 15/11/2012 12:00

As I said above, i would imagine Lord M would make a charitable donation with the money received.

Yes, the lizards would put the frighteners on anyone, JH.

fatfloosie · 15/11/2012 12:02

Makes you wonder if there was more to that cull of Radio 1 DJs in the early 90s than just making Radio 1 trendy again

chipstick10 · 15/11/2012 12:13

I have seen the interview with Lm. I have to say I feel very sad for him. He doesn't look a well man.

nameswinger1 · 15/11/2012 12:16

Yes I was waiting for the old lizard response to arrive but accusation of child rape is rather more serious and actually dangerous (especially when you are a public figure). He is still actively throwing big names around which could be detrimental to one's reputation. So why would a potential 18 year old from Twitter be in trouble but not Ike who holds 10 hour events in Wembley Arena. Am I missing something?

Pagwatch · 15/11/2012 12:22

I think David Ickes has a mainstream reputation for being as mad as a box of frogs.
I think (though I may well be wrong) that the dea of perusing him gives a weight to what he says in the same way that suing someone shouting random nonsense in the street would.

I also suspect the 'we will persue people on twitter' stance is more about tryingto stop libellous gossip from continuing that getting £200 of unemployed teenagers. Although I suspect unemployed teenagers are far more likely to be tweeting stuff about Tulisa than Lord MacAlpine.

nameswinger1 · 15/11/2012 12:27

Yes you are probably right pagwatch

AnyaKnowIt · 15/11/2012 12:36

The man arrested this morning is Dave Lee Travis

swallowedAfly · 15/11/2012 13:02

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/9636940/If-Dave-Lee-Travis-groped-me-so-what-says-The-New-Seekers-singer-Eve-Graham.html this was out on dlt over two weeks ago. unfortunate comments that insinuate people who are assaulted give off a vibe and are making a big deal out of nothing Hmm

Mrcrumpswife · 15/11/2012 14:01

Wow, i have only just caught up with things. Lord McA is suing everyone who tweeted? I read the Scallywag magazine on the DI site yesterday and couldnt believe it. The Journalist actually invited him to sue him. This was 20 odd years ago and before DI made any accusations.

I have to admit i did snigger at the bit at the bottom when the journalist said he didnt like satsumas!!

Good for him if he is suing but its always risky if someone takes up the challenge and presents articles that have already been published and in the public arena for years surely. Why are the BBC paying compensation when he outed himself and as for Phillip Schofield, not one person could copy his list and post it online because no one saw it.

Hopefully McA will hand it all over to Steve Messham as compensation for what the DM did to him at the weekend on his behalf, or to a charity. Its not as though he needs the money.

We are becoming more like China everyday. Wont be long before the thought police are here.

Bunglie your experience makes me so sad and angry.

Xenia · 15/11/2012 14:02

Thankfully we are very unlike China and have proper defamation laws and prosecution of offenders and no culture or bribes.

Mrcrumpswife · 15/11/2012 14:16

Do you really believe that Xenia?

The defamation laws in this country can only be accessed by the filthy rich.

Offenders are not prosecuted if they are rich and powerful as it is not deemed to be in the public interest, read the waterhouse report for that one.

As for a no bribes culture. I am holding my ribs laughing. People only turn a blind eye when there is an incentive or fear and i think we can all see that a blind eye has been turned for the last 40 years, possibly longer.

swallowedAfly · 15/11/2012 14:19

no culture of bribes my arse. no your average joe can't bribe a policeman like in some countries i've lived in but if you're a politician, a lobbying group, an arms dealer or a planning official.....

Jins · 15/11/2012 14:34

Ahem!!!

Don't lump planning officials in there please or I'll have to hide the thread Grin

Mrcrumpswife · 15/11/2012 14:37

JinsGrin

swallowedAfly · 15/11/2012 14:40

sorry jins Grin but they're pretty corrupt round here. my father is a parish councillor and tells me things that make my hair curl.

Jins · 15/11/2012 14:55

Ah well I could tell you a few things about Parish Councillors....Got a lovely corrupt set round my way

However in my 20 something years of planning I've never been offered a bribe let alone take one and I've never worked with a planning officer that anyone thought was taking bribes either. The councillors on the planning committee aren't planning officers.

swallowedAfly · 15/11/2012 15:05

i think tbf i'm muddying issues through not knowing the proper titles for the proper roles - i think it is more the district council that is under constant suspicion here and their relationship with developers and keenness to see certain plans go through. also much undeclared conflict of interest stuff. that is different from planning officials technically i'm sure - by which i just meant people involved in planning decisions. so apologies - and please don't sue me for defammation or anything Wink
