AnyaKnowIt · 13/11/2012 21:28

It is a very hard read Sad

mumtoallgirls · 13/11/2012 21:36

and i agree. it went on, it goes on... as someone abused in care, as someone who spent years screaming out... i am shocked this is all a surprise... ive not read all the posts, but im using here to vent, because ive completely had enough of hearing.. have people lost faith in the bbc??.... well... they've made mistakes, its an institution, abuse happens everywhere including the bbc....including hospitals!!!!.....lost faith in..well i lost faith in a lot of systems 20 plus years ago... the police, health, social services, my family...
children have been abused in services forever, its never been right, but its been ok....wayward kids..kids in care...no one cares or are allowed to care..children through their behaviour say its not ok....but adults through their actions have said 'you asked for it' 'it doesnt matter that its happening to u'.. i could go on..... those kids are now adults dealing with pasts, those of us still alive that is... the best outcome for survivors... it is to be acknowledged..is for the systems to say...it was wrong..it will never happen again..we are sorry it happened to you but we have now learnt.... evidence of this would be... not hearing someone say a child made a lifestyle choice to be abuse... no one chooses abuse.... it seems the recent evidence in rochdale tells us, not much has changed!! ramble over....

AnyaKnowIt · 13/11/2012 21:44

mumtoallgirl I believe you and I agree with hearing about the BBC. The victims are being forgotten

mumtoallgirls · 13/11/2012 21:58

thanks AnyaKnowIt. Bit of a ramble I know. Its been winding me up and my kids want to know why the radio keeps getting switched off? Let hope this signals a change for children now and some peace for those of us abused in the past.

AnyaKnowIt · 13/11/2012 21:59

Lets hope so, and ramble away if it helps

NigellasGuest · 13/11/2012 22:01

mumtoallgirls I believe you and I'm sending you a hug - to the child you were, and to the adult you are now.

"children through their behaviour say its not ok...."
as someone who works with young children, this strikes a chord for me.

nameswinger1 · 13/11/2012 22:21

Like youmumtoallgirl my husband is genuinely surprised that 'we are all surprised' even with regards to an elite circle.
Channel 4 has been relatively consistent with their reporting on this subject but other organisations and newspapers still banging on about the BBC is quite frankly leaving me gob smacked.
In a way, now news of Liberal Democrat Sir Cyrll Smith has come out into the public domain maybe people will not be so defensive over their affiliation with a particular party but instead join together and demand answers.

nameswinger1 · 13/11/2012 23:32

[http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/apr/16/prison-service-apologise-child-abuse]] Borstal was the juvenile prison my husband was at and also where the Granada car incident took place. He was/is very physically strong/statuesque and streetwise which a makes me suspect this was one of the reasons he also got left alone. Oddly, he is one of the kindest, rational men I've met. How he came out the other side I don't know.

www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/apr/13/abuse-teenage-boys-detention-centre-crime Just awful.
Night all Sad

nameswinger1 · 13/11/2012 23:34

How can the prison service move on if it won't apologise to childrenwww.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/apr/16/prison-service-apologise-child-abuse

johnhemming · 13/11/2012 23:50

I don't always have time to respond to mumsnet. I have been particularly busy recently. I am going to bed soon and may not respond.

Tipsandshoots · 14/11/2012 00:10

mumtoallgirls - vent away - I am also amazed that people are shocked.

Although I thought I had an idea. I have friends who are social workers, lawyers, barristers who in general discourse have made me aware over the years of the abuse in children?s homes, scout masters, vicars etc , porn etc ,but the more I read the more horrified I am at the prevalence of the abuse and how the perpetrators appear to just get away with it. Probably because we only talked about successful outcomes.

It also pains me that it appears that the investigations into child exploitation ie Rochdale etc are only now getting a higher profile as is only now infringing on the white middle class world. Its not just children of the feckless being groomed it could be a white middle class child who is drawn into this world.
Some of the comments in the parliament debate expressed the shock that it happened in Oxford and not on a gang ridden area and by inference therefore we really need to do something about it now as it is happennign yards from my door.
The statistic of that 90% of abuse in within the child?s home is looking shaky. It appears to be everywhere.
Keep safe mumtoallgirls I will mourn the lost child within you and all the other lost children.

I was just looking for a RAP report on Cyril Smith and found this.
Another horror that was swept away

Tipsandshoots · 14/11/2012 01:07

rochdaleraw.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/cyril-smith-to-be-hung-at-rochdale-town.html

RAP website with interesting insight as to who else supported cyril smith and another investigation required into who got away scot free, who didn't prosecute and thank god for the medical staff who reported the signs of abuse

www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/nov/09/jimmy-savile-recordings-met-police

Could be considered hijinks but from what we know know god its awful

MrsjREwing · 14/11/2012 06:58

John, it is good to see you on the thread and to know you read that you have support in MN.

swallowedAfly · 14/11/2012 08:14

morning. have opened all the links but must make myself not start reading or ds will be late for school!

just wanted to say hello to john hemmings and thank you for letting us know you are reading/aware that we are discussing this and care about it and want to be sure it isn't swept under the carpet.

agree tips that we always focus on the family (90%, poor parenting, lack of morality blah blah blah) as if all ills were born there and the fault and responsibility of individuals when the wider institutions of society are rife with the same problems - re: these are societal problems that need tackling not choicy choicy individualism someone else's problem stuff. have put that very badly!

mumtoallgirls - i'm glad you vented a bit here. it's important that the deniers and want to sweep it away-ers HEAR that this is real and not some random one off thing that happened over there. some people are privileged to be incredibly naive and when that naivety is challenged they want to stick their fingers in their ears - i suspect victim blaming and discrediting and all the other crap is a part of that process. i hope since getting away from those systems and institutions your life has been much, much better.

swallowedAfly · 14/11/2012 08:20

i think also the reason i didn't want to see this thread tail off into navel gazing about paedophiles and causes of their bents is that this isn't about individuals who are paedophiles. this isn't even about paedophiles imo - it's about power and sadism.

the stories we're reading and finding out about aren't about paedophiles they're about men who enjoy using power to abuse the powerless. not people who are solely attracted to pre pubescent children but people who get off on hurting and forcing the vulnerable.

it's about power and it's abuse not sexual preferences imo. and that is a societal issue not an individual one.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/11/2012 08:21

Does anyone remember the Neil Morrissey programmes about growing up in care. His older brother was sent to a home that was later found to be a very abusive. His brother developed problems as an adult and was found dead at a young age.

Abra1d · 14/11/2012 08:26

I disagree that it is only just now infiltrating middle class sensibilities. I am very middle class and sadly only too aware of the abuse suffered by two male cousins, and separately, the children of a friend of my father's. These were known about decades ago. I have seen how the experiences wrecked these people's lives. I would imagine that many other families in all classes have had similar experiences. Middle class children may be more protected in some respects but some of JS's victims were MC girls who wanted to be on his show.

Xenia · 14/11/2012 08:28

swallowed, I don't agree. I think however much a man is into power he will either be attracted to adult women or men or children. However it does not matter if we disagree on that and I am happy not to discuss that on the thread.

What just about everyone agrees on is that even though only 30% of child abuse is out of the home, that 30% for children in care should not be happen (and we must also stamp out the 70% which happens within families too).

I am very concerned that this Government is proposing to take a lot more children into care particularly given the poor quality of care. JH is doing good work on that and the Telegraph journalist who reports on it.

Of course it could be a lot cheaper if we just paid for those who must be put in care to go to boarding school . Was it Adonis who wrote about that this week in the Times and was sent to a state boarding school as a boy?

Mrcrumpswife · 14/11/2012 08:31

Well thats typical, i go to bed and John turns up!

Its good to know that he is aware there is a huge amount of support for what he is doing and that we are not following the mainstream media's selective reporting without questioning everything.

Is there any news on Leah McGrath being allowed into Jersey yet?
