has totally lost the plot.

She has more mad ideas than any woman I have ever known.

Fish, nuts, dried fruit, tofu, pulses - there's loads of food that contain calcium.

spidermama · 26/03/2006 22:00

Ooooh enid you wait til franny reads that.

I seriously don't think nature has made it necessary or even desirable for us to drink milk made for the offspring of another species.
The osteo society quite rightly point to the need for calcium but are merely explaining where we tend to get it as a cultural norm. Vegans tend to have a very good grasp of where to get such things.

Mercy · 26/03/2006 22:01

But I agree, she is a rather weird. She seems to need to have a cause.

Enide · 26/03/2006 22:02

lol

"Vegans tend to have a very good grasp of where to get such things"

how? by osmosis?

I know its perfectly possible to be a vegan or veggy and eat healthily and be very healthy. And that you can get calcium from other sources. But tbh milk is the easiest way to get it (especially for young children - mine arent keen on leafy veg and bony fish Wink)

Enide · 26/03/2006 22:03

dont mind HM having a cause

but not banning MILK

its insane and she could be spending her time in a more worthwhile fashion IMO

SorenLorensen · 26/03/2006 22:05

I'm still struggling with how you could milk a mouse Grin

Nightynight · 26/03/2006 22:05

The link between breast cancer and cows milk is well known.

I had a rant about cows milk on another thread recently, it really is a very unhealthy food. The Romans knew this, and so did the Elizabethans. Goats milk is healthier, but Im not sure if there is also a cancer link there.

mumatuks · 26/03/2006 22:07

well then if she's banning cows milk DH will be having two sqirts of BM in his tea then....not toosure ds2 wil b e happy about sharing his mummymilk!
DH said send her a box of woodworm! I can't possibly think what he could mean! Shock

notasheep · 26/03/2006 22:08

She has too much time and money BUT i did a Natural Health Cookery Course recently and their advice was no milk.
Luckily i drink my coffee black

Mercy · 26/03/2006 22:08

But she thinks she is doing something worthwhile. I think she is trying too hard to follow Linda's footsteps tbh.

Nightynight · 26/03/2006 22:08

men can get breast cancer too

Nightynight · 26/03/2006 22:11

well, it wouldnt be surprising if Paul McCartney had chosen to marry 2 women who have similar ideas, would it?

HM has provoked a debate, at least, and from my pov, that is a good thing.
Im fed up with having to go hungry because every single dish in the canteen has got cows milk of one form or another in it.

tamum · 26/03/2006 22:12

It's not well known at all, it's been widely refuted by extensive studies.

notasheep · 26/03/2006 22:14

The course i did blamed childrens massive feet on milk consumption

mumatuks · 26/03/2006 22:20

Look, Heather whats her face can take her milk advice and stick it.
Basically wer're all going to DIE at some point. I'm screwed, one grandad died of lung cancer due to the nature of his work, my other grandad died of stomach cancer. My mum died aged 46 of secondary breast cancer, and one grandma has always had a dodgy heart. So which do I take my pick from? I have to start having check ups for breast cancer in two years time when I'm 27 as I'll be 10 yrs younger than my mum was when she first got it. I might not see my boys grow up if I do get it and my family seem pre dispoed to cancewr
As for cows milk, I don't even drink it, it makes me sick just smelling it, even as a baby I couldn't drink it.
So before you start giving me your men can get breast cancer sh*t, just tell it to somone whop needs to know.
On the bright side i might live til I'm old but I'll probably break my hip / leg due to oestesporosis. (sod the spelling I don't care)

Tortington · 26/03/2006 22:27

i've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life.

not the only source of calcium but a fking good one which should be encouraged. over fizzy pop, cola and other shite. i really resent the implication that i am feeding my children rubbish by encouraging them to drink milk becuase i belive it is good for them.

in her defence i would say it must be terribly hard being her following in st. lindas footsteps.
But arn't there more important things she can campaign about?

paolosgirl · 26/03/2006 22:38

I have no problem with this woman campaigning for better access to prosthetic limbs. I have a huge problem with her setting herself up as a campaigner for all sorts of other issues purely on the basis that she married Paul McCartney (and lets face it, there was no way she was going to let him away). Sanctimonious, patronising woman - pity his kids having her as a MIL! Shock

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 22:48

I happen to think its a very good basis to get a point across. Any publicity is good publicity, right?

I'm not entirely sure why, but i'm a little offended that you think HM should only be able to campaign for things related to her own physical requirements.

People can and should campaign about whatever they feel passionate about, whether it affects them directly or not.

Discounting Norman Kember perhaps WinkGrin

Caligula · 26/03/2006 22:48

Well it's not such a great source if your kid has asthma or eczema.

I've cut dairy out of my DD's diet recently and guess what - her eczema is gone. Really. Just gone. Disappeared completely. I'm making sure that she eats more pulses, fish and greens and luckily she's not fussy and loves all kinds of food and as the weather gets better I'll slowly re-introduce it, but we've gone from her screaming in pain every evening to ... normal. All without cows milk or steroid cream. The more people who know that can be done the better, imo. If some mad ole bat makes them aware of that, fine.

It's a bit like that bonkers Brigitte Bardot. A total loon imo. But before her, who knew or cared about seal culls and other animal welfare issues?

aelita · 26/03/2006 22:49

Oh big deal - if she just sat at home counting her husband's millions and doing nothing more taxing than getting her hair highlighted perhaps she'd be more acceptable? Has she actually said she wants to 'ban' milk, or is that just the media slant on it which is being swallowed hook, line and sinker? I presume her wanting to ban landmimes and fur is okay with everyone on here. She may come across as pushy and self-centred but so bloody what? Give her a break. Much as I love milk, there's a valid point to be made - we don't particularly need dairy in our diets.

bubble99 · 26/03/2006 22:49

I just don't get why she feels she has to spend all of her time campaigning. The landmines I could understand as she is an amputee, but I don't understand why she feels she is qualified/respected enough to be a voice of authority on everything else. I'm also slightly confused, as I'm sure I read an interview where she said that she had become vegetarian (no mention of vegan) after meeting ol' Macca, a long time after her accident and the likelihood of initial wound infections etc.- so her claims that she adopted a vegan diet to deal with a wound infection don't seem to fit??

Anyway. I realise that vegans feel that animal products are the by-product of animal exploitation but milk is a fantastic and easily accessible form of calcium and I think it is reckless of her to encourage children and parents to stop eating/buying dairy products. She should do us all a favour and get a proper job, IMO.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 22:51

Why not? Its not like she needs a proper job now she's married, is it? Wink

Caligula · 26/03/2006 22:54

But why shouldn't she spend "all her time" campaigning? (I very much doubt that it is all her time, btw).

Would we prefer her to be like Posh and spend all her time shopping?

Women in the public eye just can't win.

SorenLorensen · 26/03/2006 22:54

She's trying to keep up with Linda's memory, I reckon. She was such a pro-active vegetarian/animal rights campaigner I think Heather's trying to match up.

I have some sympathy (a teeny weeny bit - still reckon she's mad as a bag of snakes) - must be hard living up to such a well publicised love match ("never spent a day apart...") as Paul and Linda.

Caligula · 26/03/2006 23:00

Don't know about that, if she had any sense she'd be as different from Linda as possible because she's always going to be compared (unfavourably) to her and the only way of establishing her own public ID is to be different.

Have we all forgotten how thoroughly viciously and unreasonably Linda McCartney was vilified? I suspect it's just the fact that these people are women and happen to have become famous via their husband (although both of them had perfectly respectable and successful careers pre-Paul) which is why they are represented so unflatteringly in the media.
