Is this now a banned topic on MN?
With the new arrests, and nothing being posted, I'm assuming it is.
Fair enough if that's the decision, I'm just curious.

A judge will always instruct a jury to only consider what they hear in the court room as evidence.

however the judge may also tell the jury that it is perfectly ok to bring their knowledge of every day life into play when reaching a verdict - which is a subtle way of saying 'use your common sense.'

PercyFilth · 12/08/2012 12:17

"anyone selected to form the jury will already have read months and months of press coverage"

No, they won't. There has been little more than a week of press coverage and now that someone has been charged, there will be nothing more until the trial (assuming there will be one). The media may only report basic facts re pleas and hearings from now on.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 12/08/2012 14:07

There is a very big difference between what you say among friends or down the pub, and what you say on MN or any other internet forum - anonymity. The anonymity makes people considerably more outspoken than they would otherwise be, which can be a Good Thing - many useful pieces of advice and support on here on matters that would not be dared to air with friends - but also a Bad Thing in that poeple can be spiteful and cruel in ways they would not be if doing it in their own name. I think MN moderators do an excellent balancing act, and given that it is a free and uniquely resoucrc the owners are giving us is behoves us to use it responsibly ( and not write stuff that exposes MN to litigation)

This is a case I have been thinking about a lot. When Tia was reported missing, I heard 'Well she shouldn't have been out on her own in a shopping centre' [hmmm]. Now that her body has been found there's a lot of 'How on earth didn't the police find her sooner?' It's as if people need to have somewhere to lay the blame when bad things happen. I just want to understand why she died. I'm not especially interested in blame, it's more that I feel a need to understand. That's it, really. I feel better for having been able to say that somewhere. I wish Tia's loved ones well, it must be a very very difficult time.

lubeybooby · 12/08/2012 16:16

Stuart Hazell (gm's partner) has been charged with Tia's murder

gm and neighbour have been released on bail

TotemPole · 12/08/2012 19:17

I'm interested in why it took 4 searches of the house to find the body.(That's if what I've just read is accurate).

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 12/08/2012 19:48

I guess the 'normal' police dogs would not be terriby useful in searching a house with all Tia's things in, until they brought in the specialist cadaver dogs Sad. You cannot just bring in cadaver dogs on a whim - has to be a real suspicion of death. Cadaver dogs amazing - and amazing ingeuity and patience of the trainers an handlers who have tougher job than just abut any I can imagine...

edam · 12/08/2012 19:54

it is bizarre that the police searched the house four times and failed to find the poor child's body. I know they've apologised to her Mother. Poor woman, unimaginable to have your child murdered and for your own Mother to be under suspicion...

Remember there was someone who claimed to have seen Tia leaving the house. They were initially looking for a missing child who might have run away, gone off with a friend or been abducted - all away from the house. The early searching would have been concentrating on looking for clues as to where she might have gone, and there was no reason to think she was dead in the house. No doubt we will eventually learn more about where and how her body was concealed, and it may be easier to understand then.

Oh, FFS.

MrsJREwing · 12/08/2012 20:51

If you don't like the thread don't read it.

MonsPubis · 12/08/2012 20:52

whats the ffs for widow? to me?

I was stating what could have happened which is why they missed her earlier in the week.
Biscuit enjoy

lljkk · 12/08/2012 20:54

I got a msg deleted for suggesting similar, MonsPubis. Just warning you in case you care, pretty obvious that something like that happened. I was thinking something far more morbid, tbh, but don't even dare describe.

MonsPubis · 12/08/2012 21:04

i had messages deleted on the other threads, in fact by the end you couldnt really read the thread, there was so much missing. Was just trying to work out how she has been missed with all those folk coming in and out.

lljkk · 12/08/2012 21:10

I can think of loads of ways, but don't like my msgs being deleted so won't elaborate. Some of it is pretty awful, too, don't mean to come across like a writer for CSI.
I don't understand how it prejudices the trial to speculate (discuss) how it might have happened, as long as we don't say with certainty who did what (which is obviously what we can't know, and shouldn't prejudice).
But hey ho.
If I was on a jury I would stay off the Internet completely for the duration of trial.

WidowWadman · 12/08/2012 21:26

Mons - yes the FFS is to you. And I've reported your post by the way. There are plenty of postings and links on this thread, explaining why what you're doing is a) pretty shitty and b) an offense. You must be pretty thick not to get it.

When a 12 year d girl is missing for a week, then parents up and down the country are holding their breath hoping that she will be found safe and well

When the child is found dead, it strikes fear into those parents. And when close family members are suspected/ charged with the murder it is quite natural to want to try and understand and make some sense of what happened

I don't think anyone is talking about it because they are gruesome or depraved. I understand that on line conversations need to stay legal, but don't get the moral high ground that some posters are claiming, over this

Viviennemary · 12/08/2012 22:14

I agree that it is such a horrific thing to happen that most normal thinking people can't get their heads round how such a thing can happen. Hence some people find the need to talk about it. My DH won't ever talk about anything like this.

OlympiaMumsnet · 12/08/2012 22:18

Hello
We would repeat our earlier requests regarding speculation
Thanks

As a point of information, the Guardian article on the case today states that the body is understood to have been found in the loft. It also says that the loft had been included in the full search of the house the previous week. Can't link as on phone but it's in their UK news section.

lljkk · 13/08/2012 10:37

This is the Guardian article(?).

The article does not detail what human error led to delayed discovery of the body. The fact they call it human error intrigues me.
