12 week old baby - protest to the Attorney General about leniency of the sentence

Ok, I have just been listening to LBC and they had a guest on from Phoenix Survivors Trust who was herself prostituted, with her sisters, from babyhood. Her name is Shy Keenan.

Obviously we're all appalled by this crime, but we should also be appalled by the leniency of the sentent. Apparently, if anyone objects to a sentence handed down, we can raise our objections to the Attorney General and the volume of complaints will be taken into account. The lady siad that they have already had some sentencs increased so it's got to be a worth a go, hasn't it!

I don't think you can email the AG, but here are his contact details:

ATTORNEY GENERAL
The Rt Hon Lord Goldsmith QC

ADDRESS
Attorney General?s Chambers
9 Buckingham Gate
London
SW1E 6JP
Tel: 020 7271 2400
FAX: 020 7271 2454

You need to give the details of the case in your letter. these are (and I apologise for naming these 'people', but it's in a good cause)
Alan Webster - sentenced to life, with a recommendation to serve a minimum of 12 years - and can apply for parole after 6 years.
Tanya French - sentenced to 5 years.
The case was heard at St Albans Crown Court and the judge was Findlay Baker QC.

So, shall we give it a go? I'm going to be doing it as it seems to be something concrete we can do. I'm not generally much of a crusader and I don't speak out much, but I thought I should bring this to your attention as I didn't know how many people would head the radio.

Well, there are Mumsnetters on here that work for the media, perhaps they would know if it is possible or not?

sparklymieow · 14/01/2006 15:57

OMG someone I know who works with the social worker on this case, told me some facts about this case. They don't deserve prison, they should be hung up and shot and then fed to the dogs........... sick fucks!! where do I email??????

Rhubarb · 14/01/2006 16:01

Details in the first post and then email address in the 5th post I think, but letters are better.

sparklymieow · 14/01/2006 16:16

have copied and pasted the email further down, not very good with words. this is a local case to me and I live very near Hatfield (and lived in Hatfield for 5 years) and its too close to home for me.

Emz25 · 14/01/2006 18:26

I emailed and got a reply back so it was defo acknowledged! i will also email and tell everyone i know to do the same! hope we can make a difference!

a strong message needs to be sent to these animals that the consequences will be severe! not just a few years in jail!

satine · 14/01/2006 20:15

I will also write but I want to know why people like this are treated like 'normal' criminals - ie they serve their sentences and then walk free. They suffer from a mental illness/abnormality akin to psychopathy (is that a word?!) and should be sent to somewhere like Broadmoor, imo. Does anyone in the Justice system really think that mainstream prisons 'cure' paedophiles? Especially such evil ones as this?

UCM · 14/01/2006 20:54

Thank you for your continued support in this thread. It's important. Of course a letter is better, but an email is just as important. I have done both.

I got a confirmation email back in response to mine, this is what it says:

Thank you for your email sent to the Attorney General's Chambers, about the
unduly lenient sentencing of Alan Webster and Tanya French.

Our usual aim is to respond within twenty working days if at all possible
(sooner if we can). If we are unable to meet this target, we will tell you
so, and explain why.

Thank you for writing on this important issue.

Yours sincerely

Tim Strevens

Attorney General's Chambers

Sounds as though they do take emails as seriously as letters.

kittyfish · 16/01/2006 20:00

I got one like that as well - it is not computer generated so I too think they take emails just as seriously. I wonder how many protests they have had about this?

UCM · 16/01/2006 21:42

Forgot to add when I bumped, I got a reply as well.

coddy, I don't know the full facts but I do know that I feel the sentences are far too lenient. I'm not of the lynch them up brigade, but I do feel that life sentences should mean just that.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 17/01/2006 11:35

I got my reply.

But Cod, does it matter what the circumstances were? He raped a baby. Thats a fact. Why he did it doesnt matter, the fact is, he did it.
