12 week old baby - protest to the Attorney General about leniency of the sentence

georginars · 12/01/2006 12:02

Ok, I have just been listening to LBC and they had a guest on from Phoenix Survivors Trust who was herself prostituted, with her sisters, from babyhood. Her name is Shy Keenan.

Obviously we're all appalled by this crime, but we should also be appalled by the leniency of the sentent. Apparently, if anyone objects to a sentence handed down, we can raise our objections to the Attorney General and the volume of complaints will be taken into account. The lady siad that they have already had some sentencs increased so it's got to be a worth a go, hasn't it!

I don't think you can email the AG, but here are his contact details:

ATTORNEY GENERAL
The Rt Hon Lord Goldsmith QC

ADDRESS
Attorney General?s Chambers
9 Buckingham Gate
London
SW1E 6JP
Tel: 020 7271 2400
FAX: 020 7271 2454

You need to give the details of the case in your letter. these are (and I apologise for naming these 'people', but it's in a good cause)
Alan Webster - sentenced to life, with a recommendation to serve a minimum of 12 years - and can apply for parole after 6 years.
Tanya French - sentenced to 5 years.
The case was heard at St Albans Crown Court and the judge was Findlay Baker QC.

So, shall we give it a go? I'm going to be doing it as it seems to be something concrete we can do. I'm not generally much of a crusader and I don't speak out much, but I thought I should bring this to your attention as I didn't know how many people would head the radio.

Thank you! I couldn't find it - not sure went wrong with my superior googling skills....

why is it lenient?

he got life??

MrsBigD · 12/01/2006 12:38

Enid... Life in the UK isn't 'for the rest of your life' it's much less and usually they can go up for parole after 1/2 sentence served

CarlyP · 12/01/2006 12:39

lenient coz he could be out in 6 years

georginars · 12/01/2006 12:41

Yes, originally I heard on the news 'life' and thought 'good'. Then I saw the minimum sentence recommendation of 12 years and thought 'hmm - not so good'. Theoretically he could apply for parole after 6 years.
The woman has been sentenced to 5 years in a youth offenders institution.

How about somebody drafts a 'nice' letter and whoever on mn wants puts their name to it? Sort of a petition?

BudaBabe · 12/01/2006 13:08

Well done Georginars! Am so glad someone has done this as I wondered was there anything we could do.

Re: one letter and a petition - yes we could do but I wonder if lots of seperate letters/e-mails would have more impact?

I was truly horrified by this report and upon the realisation that he could be out in 6 years. He should NEVER be let out of prison.

And 5 years for that horrible woman was just a joke - she knew exactly what she was doing.

I will certainly be writing.

MrsBigD · 12/01/2006 13:10

yes he could be out in 6 years... and might have an assisted accident... but that would be illegal.

Anybody has an idea on how to word this letter?

CarlyP · 12/01/2006 13:13

I hope he does 'have an accident'. a very very painful one.

georginars · 12/01/2006 13:21

I'm going to think about my letter later today, but I think that lots of seperate letters will have more impact, as I know that (for example) MPs are far more likely to act upon individually written letters rather than lots of identikit copied ones. I don't think our letters need to be long, they just need to be sent to make a point.
I'd also like to say that I'm not in favour of vigilante justice, the death penalty (Much as I'm sure we'd all like to see people like this strung up, the death penalty has no place in a civilised democratic society IMO) etc. and general hysteria over paedophiles makes me quite angry too. I just think that there's no good handing down life sentences which are reported on news and give people a vague sense of justice - and then setting a minimum tariff of 12 years. What's the point? This is not going to cure this man - I'm afraid he's just not fit to be free again. And I would also imagine that he will suffer in prison as I belive child sex offenders often do - let him out after a few years and his treatment may well fuel a feeling of persecution and it won't stop him reoffending.

Just emailed them.

If anyone wants to just paste something in then how about this?

Dear Sirs
Re: Alan Webster and Tanya French, case heard at St Albans Crown Court, judged by Findlay Baker QC.
I wish to raise my objections to the lenient sentences given to Mr Alan Webster and Ms Tanya French. They were found guilty of the serious crime of child prostitution, the youngest victim of which was just 12 weeks old. Such a crime surely merits a stern sentence, both to eliminate these people from our streets and to serve as a deterrent for others who have yet to be caught. However the sentences given do not reflect the serious nature of these crimes, indeed one might be forgiven for thinking that child prostitution is no longer regarded as a serious crime by the criminal justice department.

I hope that my objections as a concerned member of the public are taken on board and that their sentences may be raised in light of this protest.

Yours faithfully

[insert name]

MrsBigD · 12/01/2006 13:30

Rhubarb - thanks for that... I would have been far more emotional in my wording like 'mockery of justice' and 'no justice for the innocent'...

catsmother · 12/01/2006 15:45

I've just emailed too.

Though despite what anyone else may think of me, I very much hope that neither of them see their minimum sentences through, because they have met their demise whilst in prison. Hopefully it would be very slow and very painful.

calebsmum · 12/01/2006 19:24

Here's my email...

I wish to register my disgust at the lenient sentences given to Mr Alan Webster and Ms Tanya French. They were found guilty of raping an innocent 12 week old baby, and yet they only got 6 years in prison. These disgusting perverts should be kept in prison for life, anyone who seriously thinks they can be rehabilitated has a screw loose. Tanya French knew exactly what she was doing as it just as dangerous as Alan Webster. I hope when they are released after only serving a paltry 6 & 5 years and then re-offend you have a clear concience after all they must be cured after spending some time in prison.

kittyfish · 12/01/2006 19:57

I shall be emailing the attorney general and my mp about this matter and I am also going to email everyone in my inbox to try and get more people aware of this. If we all kick up a fuss surely the sentencing will be reviewed? Five years for that bloody woman is a joke - agree with calebsmum - she knew exactly what she was doing. And frankly the man should have his balls sawn off with a rusty blunt knife and 'baby rapist' tattoed onto his forehead.

I can't believe that anyone could have done this to a 12 week old baby. I feel sick just thinking about it, that b** doesn't deserve to live, and is so sick that no amount of counselling will ever help him, he is beyond help, that is so twisted and sick and that woman too.
I don't often buy a paper, but have been dwelling on this since yesterday, because when he gets out he is going to do the same to someone elses child, and I do feel that him and his wife should be eliminated so that there is no risk to our children.

kittyfish · 13/01/2006 09:16

Following (links, names and AG address to be added) is what I am sending to all in my address book. Feel free to copy and paste.

'You may or may not have heard about this case, but please take a moment to read about it. This is not a joke, hoax or forward and it is extremely upsetting and disturbing.

Two years ago a man and his girlfriend were arrested by police fot the rape of a 12 week old baby. This abuse had been going on for two months without the mothers knowlege. Pictures of the abuse had been taken and this is how the police caught these two so called people.

Two years on and the case has finally gone to court. The judge, in his infinite wisdom, decided that the man gets 12 years (out in 6 for good behaviour - I am not joking) and the woman gets 5 years (she was taking the photos).

If, like me, you are stunned, sickened, and appalled by this crime and the sentences given please, please write to the Attorney General to ask for a much longer sentence for these two people. It will not be a waste of time, sentences have been increased before.

And finally, please pass this on to everyone you know who wants to make a difference. Thank you.'
