12 week old baby - protest to the Attorney General about leniency of the sentence

Ok, I have just been listening to LBC and they had a guest on from Phoenix Survivors Trust who was herself prostituted, with her sisters, from babyhood. Her name is Shy Keenan.

Obviously we're all appalled by this crime, but we should also be appalled by the leniency of the sentent. Apparently, if anyone objects to a sentence handed down, we can raise our objections to the Attorney General and the volume of complaints will be taken into account. The lady siad that they have already had some sentencs increased so it's got to be a worth a go, hasn't it!

I don't think you can email the AG, but here are his contact details:

ATTORNEY GENERAL
The Rt Hon Lord Goldsmith QC

ADDRESS
Attorney General?s Chambers
9 Buckingham Gate
London
SW1E 6JP
Tel: 020 7271 2400
FAX: 020 7271 2454

You need to give the details of the case in your letter. these are (and I apologise for naming these 'people', but it's in a good cause)
Alan Webster - sentenced to life, with a recommendation to serve a minimum of 12 years - and can apply for parole after 6 years.
Tanya French - sentenced to 5 years.
The case was heard at St Albans Crown Court and the judge was Findlay Baker QC.

So, shall we give it a go? I'm going to be doing it as it seems to be something concrete we can do. I'm not generally much of a crusader and I don't speak out much, but I thought I should bring this to your attention as I didn't know how many people would head the radio.

What I wrote:

Dear Sir

I wish to have it on record my protest regarding the lenient sentences handed out to Alan Webster & Tanya French recently at St Albans Crown Court by Judge Findlay Baker, QC.

All crimes against children are horrific but this has absolutely haunted me. The child involved was 12 weeks old. Not able to cry out, run away, tell anyone. These two are evil, wicked and will never be cured or rehabilitated.

Can you tell me why they were given such lenient sentences. He should have been put in prison for the rest of his natural life and the woman should serve at least 25 years.

I cannot explain in words just how appalled I am at our Criminal Justice System for allowing this and hope that this protest may let you know just how fed up the public are as these animals are virtually getting away with these horrific crimes. Is there not something you can do to increase their sentences so that these animals never have a chance of hurting an innocent child again. I am not a campaigner but I know that I speak on behalf of the 25 or so people that I have discussed this with. Most people agree that they should be strung up. However, the death penalty doesn't really have a place in a civilised society. Hopefully you can change this.

I will do this later when my girls are in bed. I also go to the same church as our MP, Andrew Selous, and I will be asking him to take it up too.

This is great, I think we have really started something here. And just want to add my thanks to georginars for giving me a way of doing something about this.

Rhubarb · 13/01/2006 19:31

We should do this kind of thing more often!

The Power of Mumsnet strikes again - where there is injustice, we will be there!

I was totally disgusted to hear about this, but you have made me do something about it. So I've emailed too.

Anniek · 13/01/2006 20:15

Sent my e mail

madrose · 13/01/2006 20:47

sent mine

Hulababy · 13/01/2006 20:58

Although, IME, believe that HE will not be out in just 6 years and likely to be nearer to 12, but that SHE could be out sooner than 5 years, I have sent my e-mail expressing my concern. 12 years and 5 years do not represent a suitable punishment for ruining the life of baby barely before it had begun.

In the few months of working in a prison I have heard some shocking stories, several including children. But this one has shocked me and upset me to the core. I can't sit and do nothing at all.

me23 · 13/01/2006 21:07

i've sent an email too, this case really distressed me.
