Scots would live longer if....

.... they ate like the English. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15561501 And so would the Welsh and Northern Irish as well. So put down your deep fried Mars Bars O Celtic brethren, pick up a Yorkshire Pudding and do your arteries a favour. What could be controversial about that?

Put the Ginsters down and back away - it is not a pasty - it is not food; it is an abomination.

Having watched Val Warner on the Food Revival programme last night, the Welsh have lamb and seafood and Laverbread, what's not healthy there?

Highlander · 03/11/2011 11:04

Gawd bless the deep fat fryer, may she rest in piece Wink

Hassled · 03/11/2011 11:07

Yes - I thought the Welsh were a reasonably healthy bunch - are they not? And what is Laverbread - like soda bread?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 12:35

Laverbread's made with seaweed isn't it? Presumably, its iodine-rich seaweedy goodness is rejected by too many Welsh people in favour of KFC, CurlyWurlies and Beer. I suspect (but daren't say it out loud) that the 'English' diet that they're referring to is more the 'South East of England'... I don't think meat pie, curry sauce and half chips, half rice are what they mean.

Have you stepped away from the Ginsters abomination yet? I used to smell the factory every time I drove to work. Yeuch.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 12:39

Rest easy O scary one, there was no Ginsters....

They would all so live longer if they did not have the highest levels of poverty in the country, with of course the coldest temperatures in winter.

throckenholt · 03/11/2011 13:00

I have some vague memory that many Scots have a lower death age because their are genetically disposed to heart problems as a result of some adaptation earlier in the 1900s.

Can't for the life of me remember the details though Blush

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:00

Greggs are English though aren't they? And Cadburys? So what do I have to give up? Don't say Irn Bru it's my cure all hangover sorter outer!

redlac · 03/11/2011 13:05

Irn bru defo Scottish so you will have to give that up. Also McCowans Highland Toffee now made in England so that's safe now

RoxyRobin · 03/11/2011 13:06

Greggs originated on Tyneside - I only eat their sausage rolls because it has been bred into me Smile

sospanfach · 03/11/2011 13:07

But but but, Scots cuisine includes square sausage and fried bread - so tasty Smile, how can it be wrong?

scaryteacher · 03/11/2011 13:09

Porridge is very healthy though, and more people should eat it.

Cogito, I was hoping it was satire. I have been known to refuse to feed ds when it was Ginsters on offer.

EdithWeston · 03/11/2011 13:09

And porridge.

Porridge is really good for you.

And warm, comfort food. Hmmmmm - not had lunch yet...

EdithWeston · 03/11/2011 13:10

X-post!

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 13:11

Deep fried haggis and chips with whisky is surely healthier than an greggs sausage roll and froot shoot, surely?

Never did me any harm...Confused

Btw I hate the word 'Scots', it's Scottish. Unless you're talking Porridge oats, or bad whisky, which is Scotch.

noeyedear · 03/11/2011 13:14

When i lived in Enfield in North London, i was told Greggs was local to Enfield! Fight you for them Smile

sospanfach · 03/11/2011 13:15

eeuw. I think I overuse Scots cos I'm a linguist. SCOTTISH CUISINE

Ryoko · 03/11/2011 13:16

Nothing wrong with Scotch, you take that back!.

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 13:19

Ryoko
I may be wrong about the whisky, but I hate being called 'Scots'...

And I only drink malts

sospanfach · 03/11/2011 13:20

arrggh. But I was calling the sausage that, not people. I apologise.

Ryoko · 03/11/2011 13:22

Yeah well some of us haven't got that kind of money to burn.

(After buying the weeks supply of foie gras).

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 13:23

Lorne Sausage.... Then again, 'white pudding'
