Her appeal is being heard at the moment, and there is a good chance she'll be freed.
So who did kill Meredith?
If she and her ex boyfriend are deemed innocent, I hope the Italian police will continue to look into the case and get some justice for her.
I don't understand why they say the DNA is flawed, or have Knox's parents just managed to hire some very smart lawyers?
It's such a sad case.

Rudy Guede killed Meredith. He is in prison.

The two innocent people who had nothing to do with this awful crime have now been set free.

Justice has been served!

HedleyLamarr · 03/10/2011 21:08

I am so pleased they have been exonerated.

Dillydaydreaming Mon 03-Oct-11 20:57:29

The poor Kercher family, their daughter dead and seemingly nobody responsible for it. I hope this verdict was correct I really do because the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

Has Rudy Guede been found not guilty too? The only physical evidence belongs to him, other than the speck from RS on Meredith's bra strap. I hope Guede is still inside, as he is IMO her killer. Good luck to the Kercher family, I feel for them. I too would want answers if it was my dd that was murdered.

cardoon · 03/10/2011 21:08

I was wonding if everyone had forgotten that Guede was convicted of Merediths murder!

MysteriousHamster · 03/10/2011 21:10

I knew only the basics of what the media reported about this case before today. After reading this thread and a lot of the links on it, it seemed almost incredible that they were found guilty on such very little 'evidence' in the first place. I'm glad that they have been freed. I'm sad for MK's parents that they don't have full closure now - although I do think it likely that RG, who is currently in prison for being there during her death, was the sole killer. It's just a pity he's not serving a longer sentence.

HedleyLamarr · 03/10/2011 21:11

Twice in one day I am rueing my slow typing fingers. Sorry people, honest. I am so pleased for AK and RS, but temper that with sadness for Meredith's family.

Portofino · 03/10/2011 21:11

I am hoping wondering about the effect this might have on Guede's sentence - much reduced as he apologised and didn't do the nasty bits Hmm

Sylvana · 03/10/2011 21:11

That's the problem with this case. Because Guede's case was fast tracked, a lot of people seem to have forgotten that the real killer has been convicted. People see Knox & Sellecito being released and they think justice has not been done :(

MysteriousHamster · 03/10/2011 21:12

Actually I'd like to think they could get full closure from RG being in prison, but as he's there on the wrong story, who knows.

Imagine losing four years of your life like that?

kelly2000 · 03/10/2011 21:15

Now that it has been ruled that the DNA and forensics are unreliable and the police investigation was botched, it is likely Guede will win his appeal too. The only way around this is if the supreme court quashes this verdict and they eventually get a guilty verdict at the prosecution's appeal. i think this is what will happen, but they will wait until Knox is in America. It is unlikely America will extradite her, especially not in the run up to an election. If the not guilty verdict is left to lie then it will be any case where the original experts worked on will be reviewed, and there is a good chance if DNA evidence was crucial to the case there will be guilty verdicts overtunred.

kelly2000 · 03/10/2011 21:17

Portofino,
That is the problem that they will have Guedes case, he was found guilty, but the prosecution claimed he did not weild the weapons, or inflict the fatal wounds. If he appeals, which he will as he has on appeal left, the prosecution will have to show that he wielded the weapon.

nodrog · 03/10/2011 21:20

My best wishes and condolences are with Meredith Kercher's family and only Meredith Kercher's family.

RedRubyBlue · 03/10/2011 21:21

The only option open is one peculiar I think to Scottish law and that is a verdict of 'not proven'. Neither innocent nor guilty but can't prove either.

Ponders · 03/10/2011 21:31

whostolemyname

"8.53pm: Knox has been cleared of the murder charge, as has Sollecito.
Knox has to pay financial compensation to Patrick Lumumba, the bar owner who she initially blamed for the killing.
For clarification, this entry said Knox had lost the appeal, not the appeal on this specific charge. Apologies for this error."

the Guardian cocked up initially Confused

Portofino · 03/10/2011 21:39

Kelly - but I believe that is not the fault of AK/RS - but of a botched investigation. I honestly beleive that if they had identified Guede straight away, none of the rest of this would have happened. When they DID identify him, they should have gone back to square one and rethought it all. But no - the sex game gone wrong view was so entrenched at that point - and announced to the press - that they stuck with it despite strong evidence to the contrary.

margerykemp · 03/10/2011 21:51

not proven verdicts are the same in law as not guilty, ie walk free

Feenie · 03/10/2011 21:54

Sky messed up too - they flashed up a screen message during the translation that said she was guilty and had lost her appeal - then suddenly changed their minds. I think lots of people were confused by the translation that said she was guilty first - of slander against thepolice, and sentenced to 3 years.

Balsam · 03/10/2011 21:59

There's no way Guede will win an appeal. The evidence against him was overwhelming - his DNA in and on the body, bloody handprints, footprints, his DNA on toilet paper in the bathroom.....he definitely did it.

I don't believe AK and RS murdered her but I think they behaved strangely which makes me think they knew something. Can't really think of a plausible what though.

Feenie · 03/10/2011 22:05

The DM got it spectacularly wrong too

iceandsliceplease · 03/10/2011 22:06

Agree with Balsam. I think Guede was responsible for the murder, but Knox and Sollecito definitely behaved oddly, as though they were aware of something they didn't share with Police. I don't think they were responsible for the murder of Meredith though.

I wish Amanda's sister had thought to say something about the death of Meredith in her statement. I know she was overwhelmed with emotion, but to not mention that the Kercher family have suffered the most was unfortunate, to say the least.

katz · 03/10/2011 22:08

Surely RG with not appeal as the DNA evidence and foot prints linking him to the scene have not been disputed. Whilst the same DNA evidence has been presented in AK and RS cases there were 2 very small traces of DNA in RG there was an abdundance of his. equally. Now his version has been proven to not true AK and RS have been freed then he stands a very good chance of having his sentence lengthen and solely blamed

cloudsandwind · 03/10/2011 22:10

Rudy Guede has already run through his appeals and lost both of them.

fastweb · 03/10/2011 22:13

There's no way Guede will win an appeal

He hasn't got any left.

Only in exceptional circs will the supreme court modify that sentence.

However, if the motivazione of this trial (just heard) removes all credibility from the lab, and the leading DNA expert who handled the forensics for all three defendants then that leaves a rather tricky situation re Rudy, IF a third trial for K&S confirms the verdict of this one just heard.

It also has the potential to chuck a gift in the lap of the defense of Danilo Restivo. Depends how crucial Stefanoni's work was in the case.

Three months to the motivazioni, and then a clearer picture of the reasonings and ramifications will emerge.

Ponders · 03/10/2011 22:16

the initial verdict was slander against Lumumba (which is fair enough, poor guy)

any Italian speaker present would have understood Hmm

the Guardian got it wrong initially too

(do none of these media people have Italian speakers on their staff???)

ice, you've said what I was thinking, much more politely than I would have said it.
