What's happening with the Dale Farm eviction?

Does anyone who live locally know what's going on? Have many of the travellers left? Will there be a horrible fight at 9am tomorrow?

I still don't understand why these people can't just go and live in their nice big houses in Ireland (the ones that have padlocks, chains, do not trespass notices and big metal shutters) that they seem happy to use when they feel like it. I am no doubt wrong to suggest this again, but can anyone sensibly explain why, if you have a lovely home like this, you want to stay on a grubby piece of land in essex?

Marjoriew · 26/09/2011 14:18

The injunction is still in place to stop Basildon council going with the eviction. There is to be another hearing on Thursday.

onagar · 26/09/2011 14:23

Another hearing?

What could we possibly hear that would make any difference now?

Can I do the same continuous appeals thing for armed robbery cos in that case I shall go rob a bank.

Dalefarmdolly · 26/09/2011 15:36

Two nil to the travellers wooo hooo roll on Thursday an let's hope if the sight gets bulldozed a stray caravan dosent land on Len Grindleys house lol !

Dalefarmdolly · 26/09/2011 15:53

Forgive me for asking the obvious question norriscole but how do you expect the traveller children who have been attending there local schools for the past ten years to commute from Ireland to Basildon on a daily basis I doubt the council are willing to put on a school bus for that route....and yes they like to travel but gosh that's a hefty walk !! Another thing if you have a holiday home else wear should u be expected to go and live there permanently ????

P.s Onagar as they say in essex SHAT AAP lol !!!

bubbles4 · 26/09/2011 16:43

mankyminks ,it shows that planning permission has been given on green belt land in Basildon.

onagar.I believe the documents concerning Len Grindley,s place were obtained at the beginning of last week, personally I believe it can make a difference as it shows a precedent for building on green bely land in the immediate vicinity.

mankyminks · 26/09/2011 16:50

Thank you Bubbles for your explanation,it does all help in making my mind up how to feel about the situation Smile
Dale on the other hand, you where having a proper good debate on here the other day. Very informative. What a shame you are going down the abusive route again now. No need and not helpful. Please don't tell me those are your true colours....

onagar · 26/09/2011 16:51

bubbles4, but this isn't about deciding if they can get planning permission. That was all sorted ages ago and they didn't get it. This is about not moving after the decision is made and they are told they must. This is about enforcing a law.

and 'he's doing it too' is only a defence in nursery.

onagar · 26/09/2011 16:56

Dalefarmdolly your point about the children (not born mostly when their parents were first told they had no right to stay there) has convinced me!

Are you advocating forcing all travellers everywhere into fixed homes or are you suggesting we just take their children away.

That is where you argument leads right? you're saying that moving away from the school is cruel to the children right? :o

lljkk · 26/09/2011 16:59

Would these children wouldn't qualify to attend schools in Ireland, do they qualify for Irish passports? For that matter, why can't they be Home-Ed'd effectively? I have friends who live a traveller lifestyle (5 months a year on the road), they are NOT from a traveller ethnic group, and their six kids are very clever and accomplished; if they can do it, why can't the travelling community? Confused I have been reading some of the articles about the Crays Hill school problems, the travellers children really haven't been good for it :(.

onagarbut this isn't about deciding if they can get planning permission. That was all sorted ages ago and they didn't get it,but thre travellers are having 3 judicial review hearings this week against the enforcement notice,so it may well be about that,
As for and 'he's doing it too' is only a defence in nursery.,law is all about precedence and what has happened historically.

Women of Dale Farm being interviewed on This Morning.

AuntieMaggie · 27/09/2011 10:58

Just saw the women on this morning and I was actually impressed with them. All they want is somewhere to call home that also allows them to continue to uphold their culture. Is that so bad?

They accept that Dale Farm may not be suitable but they aren't being offered any alternative.

I haven't kept up with much of the story before now but they're saying nobody from Dale Farm has ever been arrested so those locals that are complaining are they just being prejudiced or do they have actual evidence that they've done something?

Also there might be a slight chance of finding their property/belongings slightly altered after coming home from the studio. Can I ask exactly what you are insinuating?

When you say "offered" do you mean "given for free"?

There's plenty of land suitable for residential use that they could buy.

Appuskidu · 27/09/2011 13:58

Absolutely. It wouldn't be acceptable for squatters to refuse to move on until someone else found them an alternative!

AuntieMaggie · 27/09/2011 14:33

There was someone from the council on the show (by phone) and I expect the residents probably were invited - some of them called in to say they were messy etc but none offered any evidence.

My understanding is they bought the old scrapyard...

They won't let them buy anywhere else in Basildon though! The travellers are arguing that they have built lives in the area and want to stay in the area but the council won't let them on any land in the area. The council are happy to build plenty of houses on green belt land in the area though...

The council are trying to evict them because they've breached planning permission as to the permanent structures on site which the travellers have proof that these were there when the site was previously used for a scrap site.

They also don't want to take the houses that the council may end up giving them as it would take them away from others who need them. They want to sit round a table with the relevant people and find a compromise.

The courts are trying to decide if the eviction is legal, and yet the council is wasting money paying for diggers and equipment to sit around waiting!
