time to get the knitting needles out again, ladies. evidence unveiled today (with apologies to the Guardian for c&p'ing a bit) suggests:

  • clive goodman was paid hush money by NI - Goodman was paid a full year's salary, worth £90,502.08, plus a further £140,000 in compensation, plus £13,000 to cover his lawyer's bill.
  • Harbottle and Lewis say they find it "hard to credit" James Murdoch's repeated claim that News International "rested on" their letter as part of their grounds for believing that Clive Goodman was a "rogue reporter"
  • They say News International's view of their role is "self-serving" and that Rupert Murdoch's claim that they were hired "to find out what the hell was going on" was "inaccurate and misleading", although they add that he may have been confused or misinformed about their role.
  • In a letter, which was written four years ago but published only on Tuesday, Goodman claims that phone hacking was "widely discussed" at editorial meetings at the paper until Coulson himself banned further references to it; that Coulson offered to let him keep his job if he agreed not to implicate the paper in hacking when he came to court; and that his own hacking was carried out with "the full knowledge and support" of other senior journalists, whom he named.

Copy of letter by Clive Goodman

See it's already in discussion.

This looks like a giant crapstorm. Just what cameron needs right now, eh? Or, will it get sucked under in the swell of mayhem from the riots?

teejwood · 16/08/2011 16:21

BornSicky I think certain people are probably breathing a sigh of relief that there are so many other giant crapstorms about (euro debt crisis/riots) to deflect attention from this...

Also would like to apologise to our male companions on the les Tric thread - my previous email shoud have read "ladies and gents" Grin

teejwood · 16/08/2011 16:22

should
doh.

Ponders · 16/08/2011 17:25

what's even better about the Goodman letter is that there are 2 versions

'One which was supplied by Harbottle & Lewis has been redacted to remove the names of journalists, at the request of police.
The other, which was supplied by News International, has been redacted to remove not only the names, but also all references to hacking being discussed in Coulson's editorial meetings and to Coulson's offer to keep Goodman on staff if he agreed not to implicate the paper.'

(From the Graun link; it was discussed on PM just now too)

boy are they implicated now Grin

teejwood · 16/08/2011 18:40

saw that ponders Grin
deliberately impeding parliament's investigations and witholding evidence, eh? who would have thought it possible Wink

HedleyLamarr · 16/08/2011 19:41

I'm glad this is back in the news. I really want Camoron to be hung out to dry along with Coulson and the Murdochs. I fervently hope they can dig up evidence in the US too. Even the Tea Party nutters would desert him.

Teej, nae bother, I can't knit anyway. I did try years ago, but I was rubbish! Grin

edam · 16/08/2011 22:35

Entertaining developments. Hard to explain away paying a convicted criminal a cool £250k. And how embarrassing to be caught out 'redacting' the crucial allegations from that letter. Deary deary me....

Ponders · 16/08/2011 22:39

I can't understand why NI handed it over - at all, let alone doctored like that - did they think nobody would notice it???

mrsdonkeybucket · 16/08/2011 22:45

I am also glad this has come back into the fore of 'news'.

I am very annoyed (but not in the least surprised) that it would appear we are still being told bit by bit, trickle by trickle.

It still appears that the politicians and police of this country, who are supposed to serve us, think we are all witless dimwits.

I do hope that the attitude does not become, "yeah, well the phone hacking was bad, but the riots were worse".....I think that it just goes to show how deep-rooted the 'sickness' that our not-so esteemed PM says is wrong with our country is.

teejwood · 17/08/2011 19:54

So much for Rebekah Brooks being out of work or going to jail - she's able to keep her chauffer Hmm
(also bit of a snidey comment at the end there about Murdoch Jnr being refused membership of one of the London Gentlemen's clubs - and yet proof that money can't always get you what you want...)

Ponders · 17/08/2011 20:12

'The Duke of Abercorn remarked of Murdoch?s proposed membership, witheringly: ?It?s not April 1, is it?? '

hahahahaha

teejwood · 17/08/2011 20:35
Wink
teejwood · 18/08/2011 12:21

The news story that keeps on giving: another for NotW reporter/editor arrested today

These comments on his work in the US made me laugh:
"Desborough continued to win plaudits after his move to America. Ian Halperin, a Hollywood author, described him as someone who "never gets his facts wrong. He's a rock solid reporter." Hollyscope, an online site, also praised Desborough for "seem[ing] to have information that not even close family members ? know.""

Spooky, eh? He must be psychic or just have impeccable sources Hmm

teejwood · 18/08/2011 12:22

sorry that link should have read "another former notw reporter/editor" Grin

mrsdonkeybucket · 18/08/2011 12:24

Another one pulled out from under the floorboards, eh, teej ?!

I agree, he must have a fantastic psychic ability, I wonder if he could get a message to my Nan ? Grin

mrsdonkeybucket · 18/08/2011 12:25

Maybe when we get the 'Sunday Sun' it will be named

not necessarily News Of The World ?

teejwood · 18/08/2011 12:27

indeed, mrsdb Grin

d'you think he could ask my gran for tomorrow night's lotto numbers while he's at it? Wink

mrsdonkeybucket · 18/08/2011 17:02

teej Grin

Only if you share with me !

teejwood · 18/08/2011 22:46

mrsdb what level of commission are you on? Met police officer, tabloid hack, paid-off celeb or corporate lawyer?!

teejwood · 18/08/2011 22:47

meant to Grin at the end there...

mrsdonkeybucket · 18/08/2011 23:00

teej

I'm not on any commission. Sad

But I should be fucking raking it in ! Grin

CateOfCateHall · 19/08/2011 07:13

I do my knitting to M.P. Tom Watson's blog, which Tricoteuses not already aware of it may find interesting: www.tom-watson.co.uk/

BornSicky · 20/08/2011 00:16

did anyone see they've suspended a policeman for leaking info about the NOTW arrests to the newspapers (the guardian)?

and more NOTW arrests too today.

it's like a steady trickle.

Waiting for the big bang when harbottle and lewis finally open their files.

Ponders · 23/08/2011 12:53

\link{http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/aug/23/andy-coulson-news-international-tories\it's hotting up again nicely for Cameron} Grin

'On 12 July, when asked by the Guardian, a senior Conservative party official said: "We can give categorical assurances that he wasn't paid by any other source. Andy Coulson's only salary, his only form of income, came from the party during the years he worked for the party and in government."'

categorical assurances, eh? so we can put total trust in any other past or future categorical assurances from "senior Conservative party officials", can we? Hmm
