I thought it was a pretty poor effort. A lot of 'flattering to deceive'. But it is the Torygraph so low ambition is realised!

bkgirl · 23/07/2011 00:13

awesomepam - what do you expect Mensch to do?What her against the might of Newscorp without the protection of parliamentary privilege? Its a David and Goliath battle- newscorp OWNs governments for heavens sake. The spell has been broken, gutsy people need to break the evil sorcerers cauldron.Give the girl a break.Would you do it?

claig · 23/07/2011 00:14

Agree AwesomePan, it is flattering to deceive. But for what purpose? Where does he want to steer us?

AwesomePan · 23/07/2011 00:17

It wasn't 'her against NI'. It was a clear mistake - Kirsty offered her a chance t oclarify and perhaps even withdraw and, gulp, apologise. It's what's reasonable.

BornSicky · 23/07/2011 06:25

Ref that industry article, you'd think a journo would have a little more care taking material from a thread that's about the extreme ends people will go to to get a story. Not impressed; I think it's lazy journalism.

Ponders · 23/07/2011 11:14

It was her against the might of Piers Morgan (obviously facing that anybody would cower without the stout shield of Parliamentary privilege Hmm)

She has made herself look very silly

Ponders · 23/07/2011 11:15

(& he was at the Mirror, not NI)

noddyholder · 23/07/2011 11:19

There is no way PM isn't involved I think LM was silly to take him on without concrete evidence in front of her and so her info was probably based on hearsay but he has had various scoops over the years and has interviewed some people that I would expect to hate him eg Elton so I have always assumed he has something on them!

LucaBrasi · 23/07/2011 11:38

Rather astonishing article re Peston, NI. Telegraph and leaks
www.nytimes.com/2011/07/23/world/europe/23telegraph.html?_r=1

BitOfFun · 23/07/2011 11:50

Very interesting, Luca. I never did like Peston much.

animula · 23/07/2011 12:01

LucaBrasi: Thank you for that article. It makes a lot of sense. Grim sense, though.

Ponders · 23/07/2011 12:51

he may have been, noddy

but what LM did was put together one entry from his book (26 Jan 2001) where he thought he might have been hacked (some confidential inf about him was reported & someone else suggested it was a possibility & explained how it could be done) & the story of the scoop over Ulrika & Sven (18 Apr 2002), & insist that proved PM used hacking. Which it doesn't.

(How they got the scoop isn't explained - maybe it was from hacking, although PM immediately rang Ulrika's agent about it, & it seemed that Ulrika was happy to have the story out there, so maybe she leaked it herself in an effort to get him to commit, who knows? Sven wasn't happy anyway & that was the end of it)

(By chance I read The Insider last month, & am re-reading it now - with very close attention to dates & details, of course Grin)

teejwood · 23/07/2011 13:01

hi everyone - lovely to find you all again (cage if you are lurking please come back, I really enjoyed your links, comments and analysis Smile)

not sure if we have covered this off before, but did you know NC are still being sued over the Mosley story in Paris? with thanks to Greenslade at the Graun:

"In two months' time, (Neville) Thurlbeck and the News of the World's publishers, News Group Newspapers, are due to appear before a court in Paris on charges relating to the Mosley story.

They face criminal charges of breach of privacy and defamation that will be tried before the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris on 20 September."

but what is even more interesting is the main thrust of the article:

"Max Mosley has called into doubt Rupert Murdoch's claim that he was unaware of the identity of the News of the World's chief reporter.

During questioning at the Commons media select committee on Tuesday, Murdoch was asked by Labour MP Tom Watson: "In 2008, why did you not dismiss News of the World chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck following the Mosley case?"

Murdoch replied: "I'd never heard of him."

That reply surprised Mosley, the former motor sport chief who was the subject of a controversial NotW exposure of his private life.

He recalled writing to Murdoch in March this year specifically about Thurlbeck's role in the story and the evidence he gave when Mosley sued the paper for an intrusion into his privacy."

Full story here

SO - RM did know about NT. Do we think he'll play his forgetful 80-yr old schtick when they ask him about this contradiction..... Hmm

Ponders · 23/07/2011 13:05

27 Jan 2004 - Andy Coulson's birthday party. Rebekah Wade has a transcript of the Hutton report. PM tries to run off with it but she snatches it back. Huge scoop for the Sun, Mirror plays catch-up.

That doesn't sound as if PM was nearly as on the ball as RW...

(It's a very interesting book, actually)

teejwood · 23/07/2011 13:09

Anyone remember the "City Slickers" debacle? Well, in yet another shadenfreudegasm (as if Mosley was not enough for today), James Hipwell has come out to say he'd be delighted to spill all he knows. Yes, someone who pumped and dumped shares, profiting from the gullibility of his readers, is "sick of all the lies" Hmm
linky

Ponders · 23/07/2011 13:11

Thanks for that link, Luca - the NYTimes does have some interesting coverage of all this!

I had heard before that Peston was very cosy with NI. Maybe he should be considering his position too Hmm

teejwood · 23/07/2011 13:14

yy interesting nyt piece, Luca. pesto likes his exclusives, though - don't know that it's necessarily a NI conspiracy, more that he is keen to run with what he gets....

teejwood · 23/07/2011 13:15

to keep up his own reputation for exclusives, that is

teejwood · 23/07/2011 13:19

ponders is it wrong that I thought you meant THE PM (as in Prime Minister) was trying to snatch the Hutton report off RB Blush

Ponders · 23/07/2011 13:31

not necessarily, teej...depends which PM you were visualising Grin

edam · 23/07/2011 13:39

Hang on, is that US article seriously suggesting News International would give someone a job as a reward for leaking the story of the decade to the BBC? NI hates the Beeb.

AwesomePan · 23/07/2011 13:41

Some confusion re initials being used here. How about we use character names from the Mumpet Show/Sesame Street to make things much clearer?

Kermit the Frog (trying to keep the whole thing together) - Camrun
Statler ( ?confused? old man) - Rupert Murdoch
Miss Piggie - can you guess?
Oscar - James Murdoch
Fozzie Bear ? Andy Coulson
Gonzo ? Paul McMullan
Swedish Chef ? Robert Peston
Ernie (a bit clueless and easily led) ? Clegg

Big Bird, The Count and Dr Bob need identities.

Just a thought...

BornSicky · 23/07/2011 13:48

Big Bird - Hugh Grant... swoops in with sage advice at the end
The Count - Steve Coogan... OTT and a little widow's peak me thinks

Ponders · 23/07/2011 13:51

oh not Miss Piggy, \link{http://www.digital-polyphony.com/muppetshow1.jpg\Rowlf} (looks just like her Grin)

edam, I read it as a personal thing - Lewis gave the other bloke a job as a reward for shafting the Telegraph after he was dismissed (& his mate Peston got a reward too with the exclusive)

LucaBrasi · 23/07/2011 13:51

Brilliant, Awesome

Although I think Kermit's nephew, of 'Halfway up the stair' chart fame is def Clegg

And what about the Zoot the saxonophonist?
