edam: Yes, weird that. But I'm thinking that getting rid of an impediment to the deal-of-the-year might be a big prize.

Ponders · 23/07/2011 13:53

Robin? Smile - definitely, Luca

teejwood · 23/07/2011 13:54

edam in summary, IT guy at Telegraph nabs audio files and gives them to Will Lewis at NI. He is rewarded with a new job at NI on an unusually large salary.

WL knows that if they get the story out, it will put the kibosh on Vince being in charge of the Sky decision and potentially ensure someone more malleable is put in his place. Obvs NI titles can't scoop the story themselves as everyone will know they are leaking it to get sympathy and get Cable off their backs

SO instead, WL passes it to swedishcheff pesto who goes "Oh, scoop, thanks for that" and runs with it... his reward is recognition for another exlcusive....

AwesomePan · 23/07/2011 13:55

Yes! - Rowlf is def. Becky.

LucaBrasi · 23/07/2011 13:55

Robin, yes, thanks Ponders

and the PMs were entirely interchangable - i thought of TB because it would have been him at the time but also thought of DC Blush

claig · 23/07/2011 13:57

some people have noticed a resemblance between Beaker and Ed Miliband

Clegg = Robin.

Life imitating art.

animula · 23/07/2011 13:58

Yes, I'm with Teejwood's interpretation. I was always amazed at the Telegraph's involvement in a story that effectively gave a whopping great leg-up to a rival, albeit "indirectly".

claig · 23/07/2011 13:59

teejwood, that makes good sense.

Ponders · 23/07/2011 14:01

ah, I had forgotten about the BSkyB aspect of the whole thing (my poor brain can't retain this much information)

Wins all round then (except for poor old Vince Sad)

Ponders · 23/07/2011 14:02

Bert & Ernie are the Milibands

claig · 23/07/2011 14:06

Is the man in the beige suit Lefty the Salesman?

muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Lefty_the_Salesman

Greythorne · 23/07/2011 14:06

I see your poiny, edam....if the Telegraph already have the story and were going to publish (Cable's threats to declare war on NI), then what possible benefit is conferred on NI by leaking it to Peston / BBC?

claig · 23/07/2011 14:09

Was it that the Telegraph was sitting on the story, because releasing the story would help NI's bid?

AwesomePan · 23/07/2011 14:11

Just when you thought 'wtf is Pan on about.....

Sesame Street Gangsters - from claig's link..

Although Sesame Street is meant to represent a child-friendly, and somewhat idyllic, New York City street, the neighborhood has a network of seedy underground criminal organizations. These groups are run by an assortment of suspicious characters, most commonly for the purpose of shady and illegal activities such as alphabet trafficking, black marketeering and robbery. Comprised mainly of Anything Muppets, these gangs are typically composed of a crime boss and his lackeys (often named Lefty).

teejwood · 23/07/2011 14:16

greythorne complete supposition on my part - i think the Telegraph wanted to get something from Vince to discredit the coalition - esp the libdems. maybe they'd prefer a tory for the business brief (though let's face it, they would rather the govt was all tory!). they end up with a story about the Sky deal and realise that if they run the story yes it may help their competitor. but it may also get a libdem kicked out of a key govt position. while they are deliberating about the relative merits of running the story, they get scooped.

teejwood · 23/07/2011 14:17

x-post claig....

claig · 23/07/2011 14:32

Interesting that the journalistic world seems to be a small world, where everyone knows everyone else, and everyone has worked for several different papers and media organisations, so that cross company networks are established and favours are provided to each other across companies.

Greythorne · 23/07/2011 14:42

teej
i do like your conjectures
Just trying to think through all angles

I agree if the Telegraph were sitting on the story, then yes, it suits NI to get the story out (via Bbc or anyone) and get Cable sacked.

LucaBrasi · 23/07/2011 14:57

Rowlf - brilliant Ponders

Think Miss Piggy should be Theresa May, after her performance in the Commons last week. Who was piggy's rival for Evette Cooper?

LucaBrasi · 23/07/2011 14:59

One thing's for sure, Peston does not come out well. BTW, I got that link from Tom Watson's Twitter feed. Watson still a wee bit peeved at old Pesto, isn't he?

agree Ponders.

Has anyone seen a transcript of the "for neville" email? wondered if it was in the public domain.
