Oooh, so the Murdochs will be darkening the doorstep of the Commons after all.

ThisIsANiceCage · 14/07/2011 18:32

Grin Grin Oh I miss Spitting Image...

OP posts:
teej · 14/07/2011 18:36

Ah cage, headfairy, me too! I would have loved to have seen them covering these shenanigans!!

Miffster · 14/07/2011 18:39

Think hacking = voicemails only. Will tell friend. No idea if she had passcode, she though not but said she never remote accessed her voicemails anyway, didnt know you could do such a thing - she only listened to them on the phone.

I guess that means she was probably hacked.

ThisIsANiceCage · 14/07/2011 18:56

Sorry, miffster, that's rotten for your friend on all counts. Sad

OP posts:
headfairy · 14/07/2011 18:58

Miffster I think there are varying crimes committed. Some of the earliest ones involved hacking in to voicemails as previously mentioned most people didn't change their pin numbers. I think that has changed now as most people are wiser about mobile/internet security. It depends on how recently your friend thinks she might have had problems. Some people who have claims against the NoTW have had their emails hacked, ex directory numbers accessed. Just seen Ulrika Jonsson saying on ITV news that they had pin codes for her security gate at her house, as well as lists of private phone numbers. GB claims his bank details were accessed. I think there were a range of offences committed.

headfairy · 14/07/2011 18:59

teej cage I'm just gutted Have I Got News For You and Mock the Week have finished their runs... what timing! Can you imagine the tail spin Ian Hislop would have got himself in to? :o

teej · 14/07/2011 19:20

headfairy i'm assuming we are safe in the fact this is going to run and run till well after HIGNFY & MTW are back on air - so they will be able to let rip then! In the meantime, can't wait to get my grubby mits on the new Private Eye.
have to say, i did know someone who passed on 7/7 - the thought of her phone being hacked (or those of her parents/bf) took me from mad to furious in recent days.

and on that note Miffster also vv sorry for your friend. being a victim of crime is quite enough to deal with, without the additional - well, frankly, emotional rape - of criminal media intrusion.

headfairy · 14/07/2011 19:36

teej I'm sure you're right. HIGNFY is back in October, just in time for inquiry findings to be published. I'm booking my tickets now (actually you can't apply for tickets until September but you know what I mean:o)

:( about your friend. It seems such a violation, it's almost like the celebrities don't matter any more, no one really cared that much when it was Sienna Miller but this is a whole new ball game.

Miffster · 14/07/2011 19:49

Thank you for the comments re friend.
It is a total fuckastrophe really.
It's all a media circus as the Murdoch empire falls but there is real human suffering as a result of these creatures and their callous exploits.

teej · 14/07/2011 20:32

miffster totally agree.

on a lighter note, i've just come off a work conf call with someone in the states, calling from my home phone. about halfway through the call, there were some clicks on the line and it suddenly went dead. now neither of us would be of any interest to the press so i'm thinking dodgy telephony rather than hacking, but when i called him back i apologised and said there must have been a fault on the line - either that or we were being hacked by NI. then i suddenly thought - oh he might not get it! but he laughed like a drain. now this is the first time i have spoken to this person, and he does not work in the media, so i guess the NI story really is gaining visibilty in the US for it to help two strangers make a connection (iykwim) on their first call Grin

LucaBrasi · 14/07/2011 20:32

Apologies for being dumb, but what are the 'knitting' references all about?

teej · 14/07/2011 20:34

luca wiki is your friend Grin

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 20:35

Les Tricoteuses were the women who sat through all the executions during the French Revolution knitting!

teej · 14/07/2011 20:37

it's ok if you can't knit, though, ponders and myself are in the unravelling division Wink

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 20:38

guess we'll need some american knitters... the fbi have just announced they are investigating the phone hacking of 9/11 victims.

teej · 14/07/2011 20:43

it's just foul. and there is worse to come yet, by all accounts.

Terribletriplets · 14/07/2011 20:47

community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2011/07/15/world/europe/15hacking.html

Stupidly I thought that the New York Times was owned by Murdoch. Wrong. It is supposedly now leading the spreading of information about what these clowns have been up to. He owns the Wall Street Journal. Duh from TT.

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 20:50

great link!

This post scared me (and made me doa little sick in my mouth):

"I can remember hearing that Rupert backed off reporting on the unrest in China back in the Tinamen Square days because he was negotiating to get Sky Channel in place over there... He played down those heroic stories on the back pages of his newspapers to appease Chinese leadership -- just so he could get a leg up in the satellite TV business... At the time I couldn't believe anyone would do such a thing. Today I believe it."

Terribletriplets · 14/07/2011 20:55

Bornsicky, he also refused to publish Chris Patten's memoir about China, which was critical of the Chinese government. Through the publisher HarperCollins, which he owns.

teejwood · 14/07/2011 20:57

bornsicky like him nixing Chris Patten's book on HK (iirc?) back in '99 for the same reasons Hmm

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 20:58

forget little sick... I've now turned into Mr Creosote.
