New thread to continue from God those NoW journos were utter scum weren't they?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 13/07/2011 15:12

exnotwjourno is nuts, though.

HeIsSpartacus · 13/07/2011 15:17

I wonder how far, if at all, Tom Crone's departure as chief lawyer has to do with them withdrawing the BSkyB bid?

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 15:21

True, Aitch.

OP posts:
EldritchCleavage · 13/07/2011 15:22

I think Tom Crone's departure is more likely to do with a contrast becoming apparent between what he told the select committee when giving evidence and the disclosures of e-mails and memos in the last few days.

Very interesting though. He must know where all the bodies are buried...

chipstick10 · 13/07/2011 15:22

Just said on the other thread that i dont think the wider public will care about BSKYB. Yes they are appauled at the hacking of Milly Dowlers phone, but as for the rest i dont think they care nearly as much as the mps who are driving this. The mps can take no moral high ground in my eyes. They are as mucky as murdoch/brooks/police/certain journos.

teej · 13/07/2011 15:24

cage we had guessed that would be the case, though, hadn't we? nevertheless, it is still kind of creepy that that is an anagram of her name...

AitchTwoOh · 13/07/2011 15:27

we knew she was hacked, there were calls from her pestering that married guy, weren't there? we just weren't bothered. the british public has really only got pissed off about this since they realised that if their child is murdered they are fresh meat for the tabloid mincer.

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 15:45

Ooh, Stewart Purvis (Journalism prof at City University) has been getting calls from the States saying "what's this fit and proper test"!

Ie if News Corp is found not to be fit and proper in the UK, this may have a huge impact t'other side of the pond.

Jeez, I wonder if OfCom even know what they mean by the phrase, or whether it was just shoved in as a convenient, bland, just-in-case, catch all?

Interesting comments at the New York Times.

Fitandproperperson · 13/07/2011 15:47

The British people are having their own 'Arab spring', just not against QE11. but against the real dictator, the foreigner who appears to have controlled their politians, their police and their press.

Is this the right thread to be on?

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 15:55

Nice to have a fitandproperperson in the room! Make yourself comfy, have a Brew. Smile

FAPP, it's not just about Murdoch. He may be the most egregious of the media barons here at the moment, but the problems are endemic in the industry.

"This is the decent and sensible thing to do. Now that the bid has been called off and a proper inquiry set up, we have a once in a generation chance to clean up the murky underworld of the corrupted relationship between the police, politics and the press."

yes, well done Nick (Clegg). I'm so delighted you've been so hands on and vocal with this issue. Hmm

Empusa · 13/07/2011 16:17

"Ie if News Corp is found not to be fit and proper in the UK, this may have a huge impact t'other side of the pond."

That'll be really interesting! Wonder how much coverage the usually hysterical Fox News is giving this..

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 13/07/2011 16:33

Blimey, I pop out for a couple of hours and yet again it has all moved on!!!! NC withdrawing their bid. Did parliament even get to vote???

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 13/07/2011 16:35

I guess they are ditching the bid to try and save things in the States but will it be enough now that they are looking into the 9/11 victims and Rockefeller getting involved with statements

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 16:38

Can't bloody keep up even undisturbed on sofa w laptop and telly both on...

Work of David Puttnam now being praised.

Apparently Labour created Ofcom in 2003 and deregulated media to allow foreign owners (oh I wonder who asked for that) and Lord Puttnam was the one who insisted on a public interest plurality test and created the legal framework we're now falling back on.

Graun ahead of the game again with article by Puttnam yesterday (mostly stuff we've said here, but adds a bit of background).

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 16:50

Here's an article from 2003 about that bill: "'Who Sought Bill?s Media Ownership Changes,? Puttnam Asks?"

empusa I have no doubt FoxNews will play this as a left wing conspiracy, informed by a liberal agenda which is totally against all freedoms, with their poor dear proprietor (Rupert be thy name, only next to God in terms of godliness) being wildly misrepresented by people who are not male WASPs (heavens above, they should never bet let into the US of A and have no right to sit in judgement above Rupert our lord, amen.)

Sorry - got a bit carried away there Blush

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 16:56

2nd link isn't working TIANC. 1st one is a real corker though. lots of respect for lord puttnam!

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 17:10

Sorry, trying again: 'Who Sought Bill's Media Ownership Changes,' Puttnam Asks?

This, from the Telegraph is a database of articles in the NOTW that references private phone calls and voice mails.
