OP posts:
teej · 13/07/2011 17:18

You mean MNers didn't change the world, cage Wink?!
back to being a mere mortal again, then

and agree - thank god for Puttnam - RM would just have bullied to get his way otherwise.

watching EM in the debate. he's making a decent fist of it but still struggling to warm to him....

teej · 13/07/2011 17:20

OMG!!!!! GB is actually in the house Shock
I suppose it is directly relevent to him, though....

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 17:28

ofcom confirm they are examining fit and proper status for the 39% of bskyb that murdoch still owns!

oh and GB announced it...

teej · 13/07/2011 17:32

BornSicky you and me both (punching the air that is).

But how has GB seen so many names of those targeted - and if he has known for some time maybe he should have spoken up earlier?

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 17:34

i think he said he's seen some of it. presumably he's been interviewed by the police and they've asked him if he knew about XXX or XXX as it was during his time in parliament/as PM.

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 17:35

oh and i think i heard earlier today that the police are only able to get through data amounting to 30 people per day, with up to 3000-4000 people potentially affected.

oh and gb is doing well.

OhYouBadBadCrookshanks · 13/07/2011 17:44

Where the hell is Cameron???

brilliant news about ofcom Grin

teej · 13/07/2011 17:44

those figures still scare me BornSicky.

i think Gb is trying to self-justify a bit here. but whoever is shouting at him to sit down is totally out of order.

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 17:59

Found it!

Panorama March this year. Programme with hard evidence of computer hacking of army intelligence officer by NOTW.

The programme is Tabloid Hacks Exposed and is available for another 8 months on iPlayer.

(Stars Alex Marunchak, NOTW editor mentioned by Gordon Brown a few minutes ago.)

animula · 13/07/2011 18:07

TIANC - the article you did link to by Puttnam is very good. Thank you.

Terribletriplets · 13/07/2011 18:13

Please give me another cup of caomile tea, teej.
xx

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 18:14

OK, in case anyone here is actually reading ExNOTWJourno2, she's made the following claim:

"Fact about J.Rees: he was charged this year with involvement in axe murder of former business partner Danny Morgan. Rees was acquitted. M"

This is untrue. Jonathon Rees was NOT acquitted. His trial collapsed because of the investigation being hampered by corruption, and police losing evidence.

OP posts:
ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 18:17

(This is the case wrt Scotland Yard spoke to R Brooks in 2002. NI was spying on the police investigating the case, which was about people working for NI.)

animula · 13/07/2011 18:28

He may also, perhaps, be part of a network of contacts between the, possible, blagger-of-Gordon-Brown's-private-information and the NoTW:

www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23969667-brown-blagger-linked-to-private-eye.do

Lovely, lovely people.

A horrible network of corruption and undermining of institutions.

animula · 13/07/2011 18:38

It's like David Peace and John le Carre have collaborated to produce a blockbuster ... . Unfortunately, though, it's real.

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/07/2011 18:41

Oh very creepy stuff from MP in HoC just now.

Never mind how fucked up things are now, he says; how are the new media going to be fucked up?

Google is massively dominant search engine and actively suppresses other search engines. Google News is major driver to news sites, ie influences which news we read.

So Google has the capability to promote and suppress news stories, if it so desires.

I don't know of any examples of this yet wrt Google News, but Google Search isn't purely algorithmic. There are tweaks, it sells rankings and does also blacklist (there's already been a spat with those cheapest-price-finding search engines). Don't know how it ranks news, but there must be some human-influenced mechanism.

Oh well found, animula. Also thanks to BornSicky for link to Telegraph analysis of NOTW stories (which made me becomeSicky; dear god, what were NOTW readers thinking when they read that shite?).

Where is DC?

sayanything · 13/07/2011 19:41

Grabbing a seat, picking up needles and catching up.
Fantastic news about BSkyB bid withdrawal and Ofcom applying fit and proper test. Who said this could be RM's Watergate? I bloody hope so.

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 20:01

For a watergate, a head of state must fall. Which begs the question, how much did Cameron know?

muminlondon · 13/07/2011 21:38

Thanks to LucaBrasi on the big thread for this link - www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/adamcurtis/2011/01/rupert_murdoch_-_a_portrait_of.html - absolutely fascinating archive footage and interviews.

teej · 13/07/2011 21:48

oh very good geoffrey robertson- he's basically reused his Daily Beast piece in Sydney Morning Herald

BornSicky · 13/07/2011 22:01

ooh, guardian blog reporting that Rebekah Brooks is appearing before the Select Committee on Tuesday next week. Definitely unpluging the phone, locking the door and finding lots of lovely baby entertainment.

Jux · 13/07/2011 23:13

Keep reading Private Eye for the foreseeable. They have been reporting on this issue for years and will keep on doing so. If you want to know what is happening vis a vis another NI bid in 6m or 2years, Private Eye will be writing about it. They will also be reporting on all the other aspects of Murdoch's 'enterprise'.
