Sobering article yesterday morn by Robert Peston: "Who is more powerful - Murdoch or Parliament?"

He suggests Murdoch may try to claim that the parliamentary debates etc have created bias, and mean he will not get a fair hearing from the judicial enquiry, etc.

Ie taking "Be ye ever so high, the law is above ye" and turning it on parliament: "The law you wrote at my request allows me to do this, you are powerless before it."

I think down the line we may start hearing how disgraceful it is that politicians think they can interfere with purely business decisions. And that of course that nice Ms Brooks can't receive a fair trial when the country has been so biased by irresponsible reporting...

At least RB will turn up in Parliament next week. Ridiculous that JM is trying to find a suitable window in his calendar before he can deign to grace the Commons with his presence.

From the Guardian:

12.03pm:To recap: News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks has agreed to give evidence to MPs over the phone hacking scandal next week, it was announced today.

But the Commons culture select committee has issued a summons to media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his son James after they said they were not available to attend the session.
The younger Murdoch had offered to appear on 10 August instead.

It is not clear whether the committee will be able to compel the men to face questioning as they are US citizens.

The de Menezes revelation was always coming....

www.bloggerheads.com/archives/2010/12/andy-coulson-andy-hayman/

Andy Hayman was in charge of the Specialist Ops leading the investigations into the 7/7 Bombings and de Menezes was shot on his watch. When you look at Andy Coulson's NoTW coverage of the de Menezes shooting you start to think about how much their 'friendship' covered.

This just gets worse and worse!

Meglet · 14/07/2011 13:05

marking my place...

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 13:32

The letter from the De Menezes family is on the Guardian live blog.

I imagine Andy Hayman will be back in front of the committee very soon. His pantomime denial the other day was dreadful.

Is Yates resigning? Twitter says yes, others say no and MET says "No Comment"

Hmm
BornSicky · 14/07/2011 13:54

I heard they were washing their hair.

I'm so glad that poisonous dwarf Neil Wallis has had his collar felt today.

I hope they hook it over a coat peg and leave him dangling.

Miffster · 14/07/2011 15:22

When they say 'hacked', what exactly do they mean?
Voicemails only? Contacts? all conversations listened to?
Could someone explain?

I know someone who thinks she has been hacked, crime victim in high profile case

:(

Terribletriplets · 14/07/2011 15:30

I think that if I have your mob (where I would have got it from is a different matter) that I could ring it, get on to ansaphone, press 0000, which would probably your default session, before people were clued up to this, and then listen to your messages, and delete them if I wanted to. Correct me if I am wrong.

Terribletriplets · 14/07/2011 15:32

Did your friend change her default 0000 pin to her personal pin? (don't have mobile; going on what I read about the royal mobs being hacked when the royal correspondent went to prison in 2005).

headfairy · 14/07/2011 15:35

Ciao tutti... marking my place in the new thread. I'm having... i'm not sure this is the right word but erm... fun trying to work out just how much worse this can get. Milly Dowler, 7/7 victims families, DeMenezes family, 9/11 victims families? Did they seriously try and get hold of voicemail messages left by people in the towers?

limitedperiodonly · 14/07/2011 15:40

Did they seriously try and get hold of voicemail messages left by people in the towers?

I'd have thought so. But I think 'worse to come' means 'something I could go to prison for' rather a sudden attack of conscience.

limitedperiodonly · 14/07/2011 15:45

rather than I mean

headfairy · 14/07/2011 15:50

That's just another rumour... along with trying to hack voicemail of 9/11 victims families that they attempted to listen to messages left by people trapped in the towers. To be honest it wouldn't surprise me now.

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 16:07

nothing would surprise me any more about this. what does concern me is that no one seems to have impounded all the NOTW email addresses or technology equipment, leaving NI wide open to delete at will.

I know it's a crime for them to tamper with potential and future evidence, but that's hardly going to stop them trying when it could be much worse charges if they find things on their PCs.

Terribletriplets · 14/07/2011 16:21

any guesses on what the PI front page will be tomorrow?

teej · 14/07/2011 16:51

The Murdochs have apparently decided they DO have room in their diaries next week after all.

Now, how do i clack these needles together, again?

limitedperiodonly · 14/07/2011 17:25

I so hate Keith Vaz. But needs must... Imagine how Rupert will feel being talked down to by a supercilious slimeball. I guess James will be used to it Grin

ThisIsANiceCage · 14/07/2011 17:25

In out in out, shake it all about...

OP posts:
ThisIsANiceCage · 14/07/2011 17:27

Yy to Keith Vaz twitchery! And yet.

Headmasterful with Outraged of the Yard yesterday. Grin

OP posts:
EldritchCleavage · 14/07/2011 17:29

I loathe Vaz, but somehow, being harrumphed at by the atrocious slimeball seems like a kind of poetic justice for this parade of dishonest bastards.

arazmataz · 14/07/2011 17:31

Mixed slime...mmmmm....it's like a great cauldron of it.
