New thread to continue from God those NoW journos were utter scum weren't they?

OP posts:
boswelloxsmith · 19/07/2011 10:25

I am unsure as to why he raised this point.

CJ had nothing to do with the Sheridan case so why did JP bring this to attention?

teejwood · 19/07/2011 10:33

did anyone notice the story about the Met using a freelance Ukrainian translator who also happened to be an executive at NotW?

teejwood · 19/07/2011 10:39

in terms of NHS funding we are stuffed, though. when the NHS was established they never thought it would cost what it does now, as they just couldn't have imagined the medical advances that mean people live longer with chronic conditions and - well - we are all living longer full stop.

we do need a new long term strategy BUT imho there is not a high degree of success or taxpayer value from government projects when everything is outsourced to a really expensive management consultancy.

ThisIsANiceCage · 19/07/2011 11:04

Yes, teej, and not just any NotW exec: Alex Maranchuk, who's possibly implicated in the computer hacking of an intelligence officer and in the NotW surveillance of police in the Daniel Morgan case.

And Maranchuk had some level of security clearance to do the translating job, which means he could legitimately see secret documents.

Whyeeeee?

Did the police just see the media as on the same team (against the bad bad criminals) and never stop to wonder if there was conflict of interest?

Honestly, cage, the lunatics really had taken over the asylum some time ago if that's how lax the HR/commissioning services were. I was just speechless when I read that.

Chris bryant this morning seems to be indicating that surrey police are going to come under the spotlight soon and he and tom watson both seem to know some of what is still to come - and they seemed quite downcast about whatever it was. RB also told NotW staff there was worse to come. Why the trickle of info? I just don't understand - is it because they need to notify the people affected first? I am really quite worried about whatever it is that is still to come...

franke · 19/07/2011 11:21

Can I jump in with a random question? Do you think that the Commons Select Committee are of sufficient calibre to handle this? Whittingdale in particular seems to be a bit of a pushover to me. I don't know the credentials of the other members.

AitchTwoOh · 19/07/2011 11:24

that is UNBELIEVABLE regarding the AM, i am gobsmacked. what could they have been thinking at HR level?

whitewave · 19/07/2011 11:29

franke Yes I agree - we shall just have to form an opinion this afternoon.

Anyone believe that as the ex-NOW editor keeps saying "nothing out of order is being carried out now"? Everyone seems to be trying to distance themselves from as they keep saying "5 or more years ago".

Terribletriplets · 19/07/2011 11:33

The AM?

teejwood · 19/07/2011 11:34

triplets Alex Maranchuk - see cage's and my posts above, about the met.

ClaireDeLoon · 19/07/2011 11:34

It really is incredible that no-one at a sufficiently senior level even stopped to think whether it was appropriate to have a newspaper editor translating police documents. How have we ended up with people with apparently no common sense at all running our police?

Does anyone know who can attend the select committee hearing, is it just journos? We should have organised a mn outing, too late now as the bbc live news is saying loads queueing already.

teejwood · 19/07/2011 11:35

white i do not believe it stopped at all - maybe was a bit more discreet, maybe not quite as pervasive, but that's about it.

teejwood · 19/07/2011 11:36

claire do the people in the queue have knitting needles Wink could be a few of us are there already!
(not me, though, i should be working )

bkgirl · 19/07/2011 11:37

That Cathy woman knows the particulars of the Sheridan case because she followed it and is acquainted with the details....eg. andy coulson's potential perjury. More the question who the heck is this de Bois boyo that stopped her for Murdoch......I really want him investigated....does he get any form of benefits from News International or frankly is he being blackmailed by anyone. Filthy Dirty stuff.

ClaireDeLoon · 19/07/2011 11:37

Timings today:

Sir Paul Stephenson 1200
Dick Fedorcio (he's the Met PR guy) 1245
John Yates 1315
Rupert and James Murdoch 1430
Rebekah Brooks 1530

teejwood · 19/07/2011 11:37

of course the knitting needles would probably be confiscated as potential weapons

ClaireDeLoon · 19/07/2011 11:40

teej they posted a picture:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-14193124 scroll down to 1058. Sadly not enough details to determine if knitting needles are present.

I don't have sound on my work computer so will replying on the bbc feed and what is being said here and on twitter. Oh and doing some work of course.

teejwood · 19/07/2011 11:44

bkgirl - could there have been a concern that the whole thing would be overtaken with questions about Coulson and Sheridan's case - that was proven in a court of law, after all - when we really need to be looking at the wider picture? they will only have so much time, after all.

also - i am really, really concerned that making this about DC and AC completely ignores the fact that most of what we are talking about at the mo happened under labour's watch - but again making it a party political issue on that side does not help us. we need to focus on the entire system, culture, processes that were wrong and need to be changed.

nb - i am not a DC apologist. did DC make a really bad decision re: AC? totally. whether through incompetence, ill-advice or complicity we have yet to see, but that is not the question for today. in fact it might even help RM for today to be made about AC/DC and i'd rather not give him a get out.

teejwood · 19/07/2011 11:46

right - has rentagob paul mcmullen actually been arrested yet? i'm sure he said over a week ago that the met had asked him to come in for questioning 3 times already and that's why he hadn't been home!

bkgirl · 19/07/2011 11:48

No thats the thing.....Andy Coulson said in the Sheridan case that he knew nothing about hacking, something which has be disproven since. So the scottish police are supposed to be investigating him for perjury - AC could do time over it.

I agree though, I wouldn't want this to be a Sheridan trial, like yourself I would love to see RM have to give answers.

AitchTwoOh · 19/07/2011 11:56

sorry triplets, was going to say 'the translator' and deleted only part of it. (because i couldn't be arsed going back to see spelling of Maranchuk Wink)

BornSicky · 19/07/2011 12:03

right, bbc parliament is on! let's go!

and yes, teej, i'd be very interested to know where rent-a-gob has gone. no notification that he's been arrested. is he on the run?

and i think that if the evidence from coulson on sheridan is reopened then it potentially affects sheridan's conviction and could get very messy.

BornSicky · 19/07/2011 12:04

ok, so why is it foreign office chat on bbc parliament? select committee please beeb, as it's stephenson up now.

ThisIsANiceCage · 19/07/2011 12:04

^^Wot teej said about not letting it become party political issue.
