Not that I ever really got it (holidays maybe for a bot of a laugh) but no more.

I wasn;t bothered too much by the celebs (though can see why they were obviously!) but to do that, its beyond disgusting.

But wiltl anything actually happen, or will they just repeat the usual lessons will be learnt shit

Good question. I'd hope that enough people can make the connection and NOT buy The Sun, or any other Murdoch paper (Times, Sunday Times) but I fear the vast majority of the great british public lack the intelligence to stop contributing to the coffers of News Corp and News Inernational.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 20:18

There's something a bit more radical being proposed over in Geek thread. Sorry, rubbish at linkies.

Laugs · 07/07/2011 20:22

I feel for the NOTW staff who are losing their jobs so Rebekah can keep hers.

happilyconfused · 07/07/2011 20:25

Totally agree Laugs. How many staff will they redeploy? She should do the decent thing stop blaming others and go.

Summerbird73 · 07/07/2011 20:32

is Rebekah Brooks still married to Ross Kemp? praps we should be boycotting all his aggressive hard man programmes.

we are scrapping the Times for the Guardian instead, also boycotting Tesco

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 20:36

About to go over to Geek thread but also wondered in light of claim on Guardian that pension funds are huge investors in BSkyB

(found here at 2.20pm:
BSkyB investors

would it also be an idea to tell pension funds we don't want our money invested in BSkyB? (Someone will be along in a minute to tell my why that won't work but it's just a thought)

Laugs · 07/07/2011 20:37

She is now married to Charlie Brooks (old school friend of David Cameron). She kept her maiden name when married to Ross Kemp (Rebekah Wade).

TheRealMBJ · 07/07/2011 20:51

Geek thread?

HappyTangerine · 07/07/2011 21:02

My family (still v traumatised by Hillsborough) asked me to withdraw a post I'd made about the Sun boycott from Liverpool fans yesterday. They're sort of regretting it now it seems there is going to be a Sun on Sunday. However, it alerted me to the fact that people don't often know why we boycott it so here again is the link I hope no-one minds me posting.

dementedma · 07/07/2011 21:03

who cares if the NoTw goes under? it's a bloody shit rag. Am amazed it's even being discussed on Mn where people get hysterical about the Daily Mail.
I do feel sorry for those who have lost their jobs, but the "loss" of this tabloid won't cause me to lose any sleep.

fizzfiend · 07/07/2011 21:40

Not going to boycott sky...I cannot believe that every single employee in the Murdoch empire is a sleezebag. I keep thinking that there are real people out there just doing their jobs properly....who have mortgages and kids - they are not all wealthy scum. I just wanted to make that point.

I understand the fury and the need to make a point. But I tried to explain my kids that they should not just jump onto the popular bandwagon before looking at the facts.

Obviously the people who have made those awful decisions should pay the price. No question. Prison not good enough for them.

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 21:46

Fizz, I have family/friends who work for NI. And I'm still boycotting them. The only language Murdoch understands is that of the balance sheet - that's why a boycott matters. It's not about jumping on a bandwagon - NI are hoping it is - it's about sending out a clear signal that, while the government might be supine, we are not.

Do you honestly think Brooks & Co will pay the price if it's business as usual for them?

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 21:58

Is this the geek thread you wanted? (how to do away with sky if you've no cable and crap terrestrial)

Xenia · 07/07/2011 22:00

The boycott has led to the closure. The closure is a clever move and fun to watch. It is a great game. The cleverest will win it.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 22:02

it's a bit more than a game Xenia.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 22:03

pats self on back for restraint shown.

fizzfiend · 07/07/2011 22:06

madam...trust me, Brooks etc are going to pay the price. After this furore, they cannot escape punishment on a huge scale. They seriously cannot get away with it now.

Do your family and friends who have never done a thing wrong deserve to lose their jobs - if they are prepared to sacrifice their livlihood for a cause, then fine. But for others to demand it of them? I just think that this is so huge now that there is no way the big sinners will get away with it. I am just feeling the pain for the innocent majority....they're not all earning big money and will have a crappy time now because of other people's mess.

I just feel strongly against a mass reaction without looking at all of the facts. Just to confirm: those responsible should be strung up!

Xenia · 07/07/2011 22:08

It's certanily not a game for those losing their jobs, I didn't mean to imply it was but for those playing this to best advantage there are elements of a game about it and in large part a PR game. Even the mumsnet boycott is really just a PR stunt thing. Closure is a good way to draw a line under it and get the Sky News merger approved. It is a good way to bury skeletons.

If mumsnetters didn't read the gutter press and read the FT as I did none of this would have happened. Change your interests, change your reading material and you can destroy the gutter press at a stroke. However ou won't. you will continue to adore to hear about smutty sexual stuff of the rich and famous. Bad all of you....

MarySueFTW · 07/07/2011 22:28

Oh happy day! Hate the scumbags, so glad its gone - BUT I also really hope those advertisers will refuse to advertise in any proposed 'Sunday Sun' or even better any Murdoch press, and the public pressures for and rewards that. I hope this message comes over on Question Time in a minute.

AwesomePan · 07/07/2011 22:30

FWIW I see it as a challenge to democracy, as a lot of people do, which isn't a game or any of the things you point to Xenia. It's also a question of ethics, and accountability for actions of public and private people's actions, and abuses of power. IN that regard it is a game i.e. who can abuse most, which isn't a fun game. You wish to narrow it to concerns about tastes in viewing/reading re smut.
But you have your view.

Xenia · 07/07/2011 22:56

I don't see how you can regard it as a chellange to democracy. The alleged hacking could be an illegal act but it does not challenge democracy. the gutter press have always been in the gutter for 100 years. The thick populace in the 1800s and the 2010s have loved their outpourings and keep them in business. Such is how people are.

The compliant new staff have lost their jobs because mumsnet and others have chosen to boycott the Murdoch press perhaps bacuse those with a Guardian/left wing agenda found that a convenient band wagon although those people may well be rehired and thus is the Sky News merger more easily approved. It was a clever move to close it down.

Ponders · 07/07/2011 23:13

It was a clever move to close it down

No, it wasn't. NI will find that out as time goes on, & Cameron will find that suggesting it was the best solution to the problem wasn't clever either

carriedababi · 07/07/2011 23:14

its not closed down, they simply relaunching it as the sunday sun

same shite, different name

please do not buy it

carriedababi · 07/07/2011 23:15

for once in 5 years i agree with xenia, it is a clever move to "close" it down

Ponders · 07/07/2011 23:22

the only way in which it's clever is that apparently they can now legally destroy relevant documents Hmm
