sex ed for 5 years olds

I think this is extremely wrong on so many levels. Would you seriously like your 5 yr olds to be told about sex like this???

BTW SPACEAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL IS 5-11YRS.

(seeker - what are we still doing here LOL)

Good point exoticfruits and Baroque.

I've actually seen the material that the school will use - not just the outline, but the full teaching pack. They are also holding workshops for the parents, split into infant/P1-3 and Upper/P4-7 schools, and also giving the option of women only workshops (because of the high proportion of Asian mothers), so that they can go through what will be being taught.

There are only two things the school is choosing to alter: they will put off showing the film about birth from P4 (even though they say it is very gentle: shown from the "head" end, so all covered up and apparently unnaturally quiet with a lovely clean baby emerging Hmm) and will split the boys and girls for a couple of the talks in P6 and P7.

I guess I just don't get what is so shocking about talking to children about sex and relationships.

Sex (even Anal, prostitution, masturbation and oral sex) are positively tame compared to the detailed description of "hung, drawn and quartered" my DS1 (YR5 - 10yrs old) demanded the other day! They're doing the Tudors at school and he'd seen the phrase, knew it was some gruesome form of punishment and wanted to know the details (so I duly told him).

His response was

"ewwwwwww, urghhhhhhhh................. COOL" Hmm Grin (boys you've just gotta love 'em Wink)

I am 100% certain he is not going to go out and hang, draw and quarter someone just because he knows what it is/was...........

This is what always happens in my experience. If it doesn't ask your Head. It is sensationalism of the worst kind and DM ought to be ashamed of themselves (I doubt they are because it is hardly a story if they kept to facts-lurid details sell the paper!)

Please fully read the report. ---->

Regarding the "It can't be true, it's from the Daily Mail" type comments, newspapers have to tell the truth or they are punished. If anyone believes the information in any article (Daily Mail or otherwise) to be untrue, I urge you to report it to the PCC rather than smugly talking about it being rubbish.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 12:54

\link{http://www.christian.org.uk/who-we-are/what-we-believe\please look at "what they believe"} as well before you decide that it's a totally non-biased report...........

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 12:57

particularly \link{http://www.christian.org.uk/wp-content/downloads/what_we_believe_parents.pdf\this statement} (and yes - fwiw I do smack on very rare occasions but am extremely uncomfortable with what they have to say on it}

Snorbs · 18/03/2011 13:00

dalaran, the Daily Mail has frequently been censured by the Press Complaints Commission for printing falsehoods. This page on the PCC's website makes for informative, if rather depressing, reading.

SpaceAge · 18/03/2011 13:00

Stop detracting from the point. Regardless of what the Christian institue believe they are reporting factual information lifted from the material handed out to schools. They're not going to lie about it are they as they would look like complete arseholes. If everyone did believe in what they believed the world would probably be a better place anyway.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 13:02

no - they - like the DM are cherry picking to get their point across.

SpaceAge · 18/03/2011 13:05

Forget what the newspapers are reporting, sensationalizing, spinning read the actual dossier the Christian Institue have put together from the material being handed out to schools

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 13:06

It' rather like Nestle going around saying how good their formula milk is and how wonderful is has been for babies in developing countries............and conviniently missing out the hugely increased risks of FF ing the developed world.

The CI has an agenda - it will report on any subject using the point it wants to use, and missing out anything that gives any doubt to their claims.

SpaceAge · 18/03/2011 13:08

Cherry picking or not that information is in there. Its not the usual sex education information delivered at the correct age they have issues with so why would they bang on about those??

ilovesprouts · 18/03/2011 13:09

well how will they teach kids we sn about se etc !!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 13:13

Yes - I've just read it (actuallyI read it the other day).

They've put together the "shocking" bit (or the bits they don't like - hey come on these people don't believe in sex before marriage, abortion in any circumstances, homosexuality, transexualism they're hardly coming to it with open eyes are they!) to make a compelling report that takes the bits they want to highlight and missing out other bits.

"Mummy laid an egg" has been around for years!!!

And actually I quite like the look of that "What's happening to me" book - may see if I can get hold of it for DS1...........

Snorbs · 18/03/2011 13:14

I can understand The Christian Institute's concerns.

Things are even worse than they think though. There is a book that is readily available in nearly all UK schools that describes sordid acts such as drunken incestuous sexual assault, the swapping of sexual partners, masturbation and prostitution.

I'm sure the Christian Institute's determination to protect our children from premature sexualisation will mean they will join me in my crusade to ban the Bible from our schools.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 13:17

I've just read it through again - the report VERY clearly only focuses on the "sex" bits - it makes no mention of the HUGE (much much bigger part of the curriculmn) that the relationships part of the subject.

I'm really struggling to see with those extra quotes and clips that the report has what is so shocking.

Wow - boys of 9-11 could be shown a picture of an erect penis - woopee doo - they've probably already seen (or made!) their own like that.

As I said earlier - I told my DS1 (in quite a lot of detail) about hanging, drawing and quartering someone the other day..........that is no more going to make him go out and hang draw and quarter than he was before.

Likewise telling a child about sex isn't going to go and make them have sex - but in the context of a much bigger curriculmn which has a lot of epmhasis on relationships it will mean they at least have the knowledge.

ilovespourts - I should imagine they'll teach children with SN about sex and relationships in much the same way as they'd teach them any other subject Confused

dalaran · 18/03/2011 13:18

Thanks for the link snorbs, but every newspaper gets things wrong, the Daily Mail no more than most. The Daily Mail has a high number of entries because the search term "Daily Mail" brings up all papers nationwide with the word "daily" or "mail" in, such as the Daily Mirror. For example, when I visited a talk at the PCC two years ago, The Independent had the greatest level of inaccuracies. Cherry picking is an issue with all newspapers, the Guardian more than most. I personally read the Times.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 13:19

Grin snorbs - maybe you should email them and suggest it

ilovesprouts · 18/03/2011 13:20

whats we the [confused face]batc my ds is non verbal no eye contact etc,he would not have a clue

exoticfruits · 18/03/2011 13:23

The Christian institute should actually go into schools and ask and not jump on the bandwagon.

SpaceAge · 18/03/2011 13:24

Of course they have. Like I said before why would they want to point out the 'bits' that they feel are acceptable? When you complain to your bank about unjust charges do you also enthuse about how happy you are being able to bank online and have 24hr phone banking???
Could I ask, would you honestly be entirely happy if your daughter had an abortion, or your son was homosexual or a transexual. Would it not bother you in any way?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/03/2011 13:24

actually the DM picture is really misleading - they've bunged exceprts from several books recommended for different ages onto the same picture and only mention 2 authors below it Confused

Snorbs · 18/03/2011 13:29

"Could I ask, would you honestly be entirely happy if your daughter had an abortion, or your son was homosexual or a transexual."

What's that got to do with sex education in schools?
