Welcome one and all!

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

This is what it's all about - Babysteps each day to try to get some order back into our home with LOADS of support from our regulars.

So join in! We start this thread on February 1st, but you are welcome to dive in at any point in the month.

OP posts:
missbennett · 18/02/2010 18:45

Quick drop in and waving to all.
SC sounds like a mammoth mission you have underway - good luck with it all
I have done:-
-morning routine
-washing
-pile on table
-guide stuff and paid cheques in
-motivational talk - failed - did the talk - no response so have moved onto ranting. DD1 gone to friend's house for sleepover, DD2 watching Glee (), DH ignoring me.
-unplanned decluttering - in search of DD1's NI card, which she needs for tomorrow. Still can't find it though she assures me I know where it is. AARGH. But the two sides of the unit I have done look wonderful
Right, better go and dish up tea. Am definitely going to surprise party now....need to get out

feetheart · 18/02/2010 22:26

missbennett - confession time, I printed out the 11 Commandments last time I tried Flying!
Going out sounds like a good idea, hope you went and enjoyed it.

SC - Hama beads yet to make an appearance in this house and, hopefully, all friends briefed to avoid the damn things for DD's birthday

  • Work - done
  • Morning routine - done
  • 2 minutes hotspot - done
  • Sweep kitchen floor after DD spilled most of a box of cereal - done
  • Hoover living room, landing and maybe a bedroom or two - done
  • DS to GP's - done Has ear infection so on antibiotics but as lively and energetic as usual!
  • Bank - done
  • Mission - did cobweb one from Monday!
  • Sort DH's present - nearly done
  • DC to half-term gymnastics - done they had a great time
  • More work - no
  • Evening routine - need to finish but watching Masterchef we recorded earlier. This could become a bit of a stumbling block over the next 10 weeks or so
  • Bed by 10.30pm - doubt it
DidEinsteinsMum · 18/02/2010 22:49

Miss bennet - dont worry i have the 11 commandments laminated and stuck to the back of my door. If it helps it helps.

Pluto · 18/02/2010 23:25

Hi Everyone. I've had a bit of a break from things for a week - although you may have seen me posting elsewhere. It's been very busy here chez Pluto. DS2 was 1 on Saturday and the end of term was really busy, including a very long parents' eve in a school hall which was in arctic temperatures on Thurs. Half term has been good and DS1 and I had a great day in London yesterday. Flying has been a bit erratic but DH has been really helpful. So, the remainder of the week looks like this flying wise:

to do
ironing
bedding from all beds into wash
put clean clothes away
hoover everywhere
bathrooms
mop kitchen floor
DS1 to tidy his bedroom
school work.

Will be a bit manic for the first fortnight after half term - there is a lot going on here but I really hope that by sticking with the flying I will feel like I've got a bit of a handle on things.

MrsDinky · 18/02/2010 23:34

Evening all,

Feetheart - hate picking up the Hama beads, but do love watching the DCs do them, the concentration and dexterity value is brilliant. Also, helps me with my ironing - every time they ask me to iron one of their creations I do 10 mins worth of clothes too.

PA - slowcooker curry and naan breads were well received by all, I bodged the naan recipe a bit as I only wanted half but CBA trying to do half an egg and they still worked pretty well.

DWM - much snow up your way today? TV said Worcestershire had quite a bit

MissB - I would love to have someone else on the cheese challenge to spur me on! It is proving very challenging, the DCs eat a lot of it and the temptation to just pop a bit in my mouth when I am doing theirs is huge, have held out today.

SC - hope you got the craft stuff done, did mine earlier in the week, it also covered the entire kitchen table and had me reaching for the wine

PMPY, DEM, TeamC, Ellie, MrsG, everyone else - hello!

Today:

DW - emptied, now refilled an just finished
washing x 1 actually x 2 as tomorrow will be out a lot again
Declutter bath toys, wipe down surfaces a la mission - did surfaces, bath toys they still seem to use them all
Tidy up lounge which is a right mess - DH supervised DCs to do this from the comfort of his armchair, with a fair degree of success
Sort out some financial paperwork - found it, didn't do it!
Cook curry for tea (PA might try your naan recipe) - done, with naan, lovely!

Also, bravely, as it's hell on earth going to the sports centre at half term, took the DCs swimming, then to soft play, then to Sainsburys. And fixed up the woodburner and had a lovely fire (though the new string I have put on the door means it doesn't stay shut and has to be propped with a log, will have to look at it again in the morning when it's cooled down.

Oops, meant to go to bed an hour ago, Sky+ has got a lot to answer for....

EllieAnne · 18/02/2010 23:46

Have just (as in 30 minutes ago) discovered this flying lark and must say it excites me greatly!

But I'm also pretty scared about taking the plunge and giving it a go, it seems I could be setting myself up to fail everyday (well, actually, I usually feel I've under achieved so maybe worth a shot?) and seems like a lot of organisation and commitment needed. I used to be fab with routines and lists and organisation etc (I was known for it!) but can't seem to do it anymore, does this mean flying could be for me?

I guess I just need someone tough to tell me to sort myself out and make a start? I'm sure one of you will oblige and kick me into shape....please?

Mmmango · 19/02/2010 04:22

Pmpy -sorry about work stress, hope things improve soon
SC - very brave tackling the craft cupboard
MrsDinky - giving up cheese is very, very brave. I've decided to give up chocolate - don't usually 'do' lent but when I was pregnant I got into a bar a day chocolate habit that seems to have continued for the last 4 months! So seems like a good time to knock that on the head.

Welcome EllieAnne, don't worry, it's not really possible to fail. just look at the babysteps and missions as dwm posts them, and gradually the routines build up by themselves. The fat fairy website has the master plan, and we just do a bit each day. I only started a couple of months ago and am finding it pretty painless and the house looks much better (although we did start from a very low base, I have to admit).

Hi to feetheart, dem/ chaos, pluto, dwm and all the rest of you.

I'm feeling pleased with myself this morning because I actually did the 'clear you desk' declutter thing (was it a mission or an Olypmic thing? can't remember) yesterday, and it feels so nice to sit down at the desk now. Although it does encourage me to be on the computer even more - not so good.

droitwichmummy · 19/02/2010 07:05

Good morning everyone!

Welcome EllieAnne as Mmmango said just do what you can. We are not in the same league list-wise as the Slattern (although they are lovely too!) and the aim is that if you post a list you make it manageable. If you are new just keep it short. You only need to do babysteps to start with although if you do more that is ok too. And there is no need to try to catch up - just start from today's step; we go back to the beginning again on March 1st (yes really guys - March is on the horizon)

Hi Pluto no need to confess to posting on other threads, no offence taken Your life sounds like mine atm!

MrsD WE HAVE SNOW Not too much -2/3 cm and it looks like its melting this morning. I was home all day yesterday (although serious bout of cba in the afternoon) so didn't really notice it but my DSister who works in Worcester said it took her a hour to get a mile in the car - something about a lorry getting stuck.

Babystep is a reading one so EllieAnne if you like you could do this one. It is the shining sink one which is the first we do.

Tioday's mission is skirting boards in the bathroom and office supplies elsewhere

Do you want the olympic ones? Here they are!
We have menu planning
shoe sorting
and working out

I promised some flying with teenager stuff to someone here it is also the link to all of the Riley's Challenges

Enjoy! I'm off out in the snow - that's a cold face btw

OP posts:
feetheart · 19/02/2010 08:49

Morning! We have snow here too and its still coming down though not settling on the road. Kittens desperate to go out but I need to give the birds a chance to get breakfast - one of them came in with their first bird yesterday

EllieAnne - welcome. Don't worry that it seems daunting, if you take it 1 Baby step at a time it sort of sneaks up on you and really does work! I've been doing it since January (for the 4th time I think) but its all falling into place this time and my house (and my sense of well-being) has really benefited. Before you know it you will be back in the land of lists and routines

MrsD - still not persuaded by Hama beads though the ironing link is interesting!

List for today:

  • Work - did more before breakfast!
  • Morning routine
  • 2 minutes hotspot
  • Make DD's cake (did icing yesterday)
  • Mission - no skirting boards so will invent own one
  • Buy DH's present - 2 trips out planned today to do this
  • DC to half-term trampolining
  • Bit more work
  • Evening routine
  • Bed by 10.30pm

Have a good day everyone

DidEinsteinsMum · 19/02/2010 09:10

Is it wrong to be glad for the snow? i have just canceled the hour plus drive over to the aquarium and ordered a pj day, complete with lego building and tv watching.

I have to finish lesson plans today as i had a dead line for pre-teaching submission. so will have to deal with that. Just a few tweeks to year 7. type up year 9. Look at year 8 and year 10. got a few bits done for year 10 thinking but it is a topic that i am not really sure about so will have to swot up. emulsions were not in the syllabus when i did gcse and havent been on the syllabus of anything i have done since. Unless you count making homemade mayo - which aparently H&S wont permit - school's decision.

List today:
help ds build lego
trip to pets at home to look at animals
lesson plans
not to kill ds for being up about 8 times last night (6 times in the first 3 hours of me going to bed)

I can safely say life is back to normal and the end of the holidays are approaching fast. Roll on monday!

MrsDinky · 19/02/2010 09:16

Morning all, welcome to ElliAnne, just dip in and build up gradually, ask if you don't understand any of the strange terminology, and don't worry if other people seem to have very big lists, just do what suits you. I have been on here since November and it has made a huge difference, I am very organised in most aspects of my life but housework was not one of them, this structured approach works welll for me.

Today,

Finish clearing front room, somehow it looks a lot worse in daylight
Empty DW
No bathroom skirting boards, spotted a grubby one on the landing yesterday might do that.
Go to friend's house for lunch
Have another friend and her DD here for tea
Have another go at sorting out woodburner
Eat no cheese
Get ticket for Portsmouth for the FA Cup game! If they haven't gone bust by then.

See you later

missbennett · 19/02/2010 09:45

Morning all!
Ellieanne, it does make a difference - even just doing little bits - which turn into bigger bits until some sort of control is regained! And this thread is always inspirational

DWM thank you for all the links. I will add to favourites and read this evening.

DEM your snow day sounds lovely We have a little here - just a covering on the grass but nothing on the roads.

MrsD - I sort of failed yesterday - ordered pizza when I was out and of course there was cheese on it. But I didn't do any mindless cheese grazing, which is the problem for me. Good luck today!

feetheart - did Hama beads with the Guides the other week. They too loved them (as does DD2 - 14) and developed some really complex designs - so, as a toy they do last but still finding some beads on the Guide hut floor and it was 3 weeks ago.....

Waves to everyone else.

Had a lovely evening last night but late back. Am going to go into work later just to catch up and see how I do. So my list will be short and goes like this:
-morning routine - partially done
-menu plan
-shopping - probably this evening as am busy all day tomorrow
-load of washing
-admire decluttered unit - oh yes, several times already and will continue. I have BANNED everyone from putting any paper down on it. I know I'm probably the worst culprit though
-might try and deal with the top of said unit to complete the job!

Think that's it for now. Have a good day, everybody!

teamcullen · 19/02/2010 10:10

Morning All. ElliAnne I have officially been a flybaby for one week. ( I think I deserve a certificate) Ive had a shiny sink all week Not one day have I woke up to last nights dishes and this has really spured me on. Mt toilet has never been so shiny either.

I am rubbish at cleaning and have never had any type of routine, I am useless at lists and my housework normally would be done on a desperatly needs doing basis only.

This week, by following the baby steps and missions, doing a wash load each day and 15 miniutes declutter, there is already a big difference. We had a house full last night for DS1 birthday. I knew my toilets were clean, my kitchen looked presentable (as long as nobody went routing in the cupboards and fridge) and I was less stressed

DS has a lovely time at the Quazar yesterday and the cake was greatly recieved by all.

Todays list
washing macine on
my bedding and DD bedding striped, washed and made
Babystep done
mission- my skirts need painting so going to strip the remainder of wallpaper from the walls in bathroom
clean bathroom after its stripped
quck tidy of living room
Doctors
visit mum

Dss have finninshed their list so now they have laptop time. See you all later with an update.

DidEinsteinsMum · 19/02/2010 11:10

EllieAnn - dont worry if it doesnt seem to click. I get so far then life gets in the way and i have to start all over again. I have gone on strike. There are two other adults in the house who can help but cba. not doing it all myself. Will hopefully sort it out for monday but knackered today. no flying here - except maybe the early night...

teamcullen · 19/02/2010 15:35

It 3.30pm and all Ive done is been to the doctors.

My new doctor is lovely. Its like in the old days when your doctor knew who you were and didnt look at you as if you were a time wasting number.

Ive just come on to kick myself very hard in the shins (my bum is numb from sitting on it for so long) and get out of the chair and move myself.

job 1. washing machine

job 2. bathroom....

DidEinsteinsMum · 19/02/2010 17:35

not finished any of the lesson plans that needed to be emailed. Am up a creek without paddle. An no idea where to start with teaching year 8 about light... or year 10 about emulsions. lots and lots of naughty words. Need to focus in a bit. Will hopefully get ds down early tonight as need to get emailed asap, which means i need to get written asap.

StillCounting · 19/02/2010 18:14

Hello!! Thanks for craft cupboard encouragement everyone. I finished it yesterday evening and was just left with a pile of extraneous bits and pieces to put return to their rightful places elsewhere this morning and its looking beautiful [smug emoticon]

Just dashing in and out as still a bit busy here but in a nice - sociable - way - not much Flying happening tbh save for daily routines

Had lovely day today (dh took very rare six hours off work - hurrah - even though he was permanently fiddling with his Blackberry wotsit and has gone back to the office now ) and we all went out to the shops - v. quiet and I bought dd a few clothes for spring (light mac for school etc) and then out for (healthy) early supper ...

Feel rather out of touch with everyone on here but can see you have been very busy.

hands TeamCullen certificate (official order of the feather duster)

A very warm welcome to Ellieanne - don't be worried - Flying is brilliant! Just 15-min easy, focused, concise steps each day. No perfectionism or "all or nothing" thinking allowed. The Fat Fairy's website is a bit wierd frankly but underlying principles of system v. sound. And everyone is very strange and obsessed with naan bread, pigeons and hamma beads encouraging on here!!

Joking apart, am definitely going to have a go at that naan bread recipes - sounds like a really good one. Have new veggie curry recipe to try out next week so perfect opportunity!

And by the way MrsDinky before I forget - how do you avoid melting the bits of the peg board that aren't covered in beads pls?

Feetheart thank you so very much for sleepover/age info (forgot to mention in last post - apologies). DD 6.5 yrs so I may take the plunge this Easter with one of her closest friends ....

DEM was just going to suggest mayonnaise but I can see it's not allowed ... shame ...hope you enjoyed your pj day - sounds lovely

Thank you for multiple links MummyD!!

Hello also to PA, Ellie Pluto Pushme MissBennett Optimistic Mini-M, Mmango TeamCullen and I'm sure I've missed lots of people but must go!! Putting dd to bed early tonight ...she's had a tiring couple of days ...and more friends coming tomorrow.

See you all and will catch up with thread properly over weekend.

Keep Flying high everyone!

StillCounting · 19/02/2010 18:17

Oh $+!!??*&é!!!! blither!!

Emboldened instead of striked out there! Sorry! Typing too fast as usual

Must preview messages before posting ....

StillCounting · 19/02/2010 18:17

DidEinsteinsMum · 19/02/2010 19:29

SC. made me smile. am about to fail on the do not kill ds part of the to do list.

droitwichmummy · 19/02/2010 20:26

DEM can we have a pact please? You do your lesson plans and I do some clearing of the junk in the living room and on the dining room table. oh and hanging some of my wet washing on the airer and putting dry stuff away.

Meet you back here at 10 for vino!

Anyone else can join in

OP posts:
MrsDinky · 19/02/2010 21:43

Evening all,

DEM - hope you have finished the plans
DWM - i've gone for the vino a bit early tonight, well it is Friday!
SC - the hama beads are taller than the little pegs, so long as you keep the iron flat it is fine, we have not had any problems with the peg board melting. Well done on the craft cupboard.
Teamcullen - well done on your first week, it really does make a difference that quickly.

Finish clearing front room, somehow it looks a lot worse in daylight - well, finish might be a bit optimistic, but it is better
Empty DW - done
No bathroom skirting boards, spotted a grubby one on the landing yesterday might do that - no.
Go to friend's house for lunch - yes
Have another friend and her DD here for tea - yes
Have another go at sorting out woodburner - might do in a minute
Eat no cheese - ate the tiniest scrap whil grating it for macaroni cheese for DCs tea. Managed total avoidance at friend's house, despite plateful of nice cheese on offer (DD ate my share, no one any the wiser!)
Get ticket for Portsmouth for the FA Cup game! If they haven't gone bust by then - my friend is sorting these now

Also made some rock cakes to take to friend's house, yum, did extra washing (DS spilt a bowl of cereal everywhere), hung washing on line as it was a beautiful day, came back home to find it covered in a light dusting of snow, oh well.

droitwichmummy · 19/02/2010 22:05

Well have managed to
get DS to bed and asleep
put all of the washing away
hang lots of washing on airer
1 load in WM
1 load in DW
small blast at dining table

chips have arrived (thanks DH) so that will do for tonight.

Thanks for opening the wine MrsD

OP posts:
EllieAnne · 19/02/2010 22:49

Wow thanks everyone!

Filled with confidence from all the encouraging posts I now have a very shiny sink and am very proud of it too!

Am liking day 2 babystep, but reckon I'll struggle doing it everyday! Always wandering about in my pj's til lunchtime, mid morning, frankly too late, telling myself I'll get dressed when I've finished on the laptop the housework

Looking forward to waking up as a flybaby tomorrow

feetheart · 19/02/2010 23:15

Good day but now have possible beginnings of cold - I really haven't got time to be ill
Will update list and go to bed so sorry for not catching up:

  • Work - did more before breakfast!
  • Morning routine - done
  • 2 minutes hotspot - done
  • Make DD's cake (did icing yesterday) - done with 'help'
  • Mission - no
  • Buy DH's present - 2 trips out planned today to do this - done and very pleased with results, won't say what we got as he does occasionally wander on to MN!
  • DC to half-term trampolining - done
  • Bit more work - no
  • Evening routine - done
  • Bed by 10.30pm - no but going now

DD's birthday outing tomorrow - 4 little girls and me off to craft workshop all afternoon then back for pizza and cake.
Beforehand I need to buy all pizza toppings (made bases tonight), make cake into passable butterfly (eek!) and fend off lurgy. Wish me luck!
Have good w/e everyone.
